Here's a well-kept secret: your favorite Yelper/visual artist/spiritual bon vivant (that's me in case you were wondering) fancies himself a bit of an antiquary. Many of my favorite antiques have come from this charming little place in Helotes. Whenever I stop by B Daddy's BBQ next door, I walk over to Old Town Depot Antiques to see what's new. The selection is vast and includes everything from Victorian-era posh to 1950s small-town Americana. As a spiritualist, I'm particularly drawn to the variety of crystals and tarot card decks. As a WWII enthusiast, I am impressed by the variety of American and German guns, knives, and military paraphernalia. The prices are reasonable, and I've found many bargains, including a set of antique doorstops that...well...I really shouldn't talk about here. I know that last sentence sounds mysterious (because it is), but feel free to contact me If you're curious. I assure you it's an interesting story with an accompanying video. The woman who operates the store is friendly and quick to offer suggestions. Unlike many antique store owners (those presumably mindful of potential shoplifters), she will leave you be and let you enjoy your visit. She has given me several great deals over the last few years, so don't be afraid to negotiate. The one-star reviews on this page are laughable; the staff here are very friendly and accommodating to everyone I've ever seen, irrespective of race or ethnicity. If you sensed "bad vibes," then perhaps that's a reflection on *you*, not your ethnicity. Fans of the feline variety, take note: the shop's true owner is "Rascal," a cute little fellow who, if you're charmed like me, will greet you as you enter the premises. Rascal lived up to his name on a recent visit, as he mugged for my camera (see photos) and followed me around the store to offer insight into the various trinkets behind the counter. Treasures.... Yes an antique store filled to the brim with treasures! Decent size store with various vendors. Make sure you take the time to browse closely as you may miss that special something. Items flow outdoors to front of the store and merge into The Cottage next door, another antique store. Employees were friendly and helped us measure a large metal Texas star we had considered. We'll revisit again soon. If you plan on going, make a day out of it! have lunch in downtown Helotes and browse the antique shops : ) read more

My mother and her friend left a deposut for a table in Febuary. Told them they were leaving town and return in May to pick up. A cashiers check was sent in March for full payment. They returned in June and was told table was sold to somebidy else and they would get no refund. I can see losing the depisut amount but notthe cashiers check for full payment. The antique shop called the police becayse of 2 very irate customers who are 86 and 87years old. Bad Business practice, beware of this place! read more

Woman behind the counter sitting and staring at me. Saw her from the corner of my eye and when I turned to look back at her she turned away. Then I thought to myself that must have been an accident and as I approached her, I said Hello, and she turned away not to make eye contact with me and didn't even respond. I myself am not usually a skeptic or care about these things but these were clearly very racist vibes. I left. Don't want to spend money where I am not wanted. read more

This place had a bad vibe from the instant my wife and I walked in. We were in town to see a show at Floore's and decided to look around Helotes the day after the concert. From the instant we walked in this place, the two women who worked there sat and stared at my wife and I, gossiping to each other in a really creepy manner. Just to prove a point, I walked over toward the counter and said hello in a loud voice, but neither one said a word. My wife ended up buying some old coffee tin from the place, and as we stood at the counter, the woman tried to make small talk in a really snotty and very artificial way. Real nice folks. As far as their inventory was concerned, it was pretty banal stuff, a lot of cheesy arts-and-crafts projects like a state of Texas figure made out of shotgun shells, more souvenirs and trinkets than actual antiques. We were looking for an antique bed at the time, and this place barely had any antique furniture at all. In short, it's not really even worth a look if you're looking for antiques, and not really worth a look even if you're just trying to kill some time. Most of the small towns in the Hill Country have at least one antique store with better stuff than this. read more

I've been around the area but never visited this particular antique store. I have found some gems at good prices. I'm glad I can support a small business that has great service and affordable prices. This is now one of my favorite antique stores! The best one in the area. read more
