Picked up for a song at Old Town, repainted (original finish was long gone), and replaced "fingerboard" - a keeper!

A Portland standby, Old Town Music is everything Portland Music Co. isn't. Not the kind of place to go for a school band or orchestra student's outfit, Old Town is strongly geared toward guitarists' interests first, with smaller areas of bass, keyboard, acoustic instruments, and home studio gear - next to no drum department aside from a smattering of heads, sticks, and occasional accessories. Friendly, reasonably knowledgeable staff, but you won't have a "salesperson" in your face trying to "sell" you - there to answer questions if asked, but if you want to just look around and not be bothered, no problem. Stock changes often, so it's worth checking back from time to time just to see what's good, rather than shopping for something specific. One time they had obviously just bought out someone's stock from a closing backline rental business and had rows of Marshall stacks, Ampeg 8x10 SVT rigs, and more at stupid cheap blowout prices - picked up a good as new Supro 1688T 2x12 amp for a couple hundred bucks instead of the $999 it went for "on sale" everywhere else. Another time, Fender 1952 laps steel, $175. You just never know what you'll find!

Old Town is a great little cavern for a certain kind of musician. The floor is covered in strange, old, (mostly tube) amps, and the walls with guitars. There's always some strange synthesizer lying around and there's a greater selection of wierd effect pedals than any I've found in Portland. The staff is really cool too, and always helpful. It's a great place to get your gear.

Selection of effects pedals is really impressive. Knowledgeable and helpful staff, too, even in COVID times.

They carry a huge variety of electric guitars, acoustic guitars, amplifiers, and accessories. They also offer setup and repair services. They sell both new and used items. Their used items were unanimously in extremely great condition, and did not appear to be used. I've never been so insulted. These clowns must have assumed they were stolen. "Where'd you get them? Why are you selling?..." Hey pal, I have multiple instruments and these were two I almost never play (as if it's any of their business). They claimed there were problems with both and weren't interested. Now, I have done business with them multiple times, but they can kiss this customer goodbye! I'm not a thief, but these guys are jerks. To prove these were from my personal collection, I've included a picture of my remaining guitars. I ended up gifting the guitars to my niece.

But I came at about 2:45 and the whole place was still dark. Just a thought - maybe have enough staff around at all times that some of your employees can take lunch while others are still on shift? Were they closed for summer vacation again and just didn't tell anyone? Sorry, but I'm all done here. You've wasted enough of my time. At one time Portland Music Co. was the best in the city. Those days are gone. It's better to buy music online nowadays anyway. The prices are often marked down by 20% or more if you get in on a holiday sale or something.

Seeing your child walk onto a real stage, under real lights, with a full band and an audience cheering them on hits you right in the heart. This was not just kids playing songs. It was confidence. Growth. Courage. You could see how much work they put in and how supported they felt by their instructors and by each other. Watching them perform, handle the crowd, recover from little mistakes, and finish strong was incredibly moving as a parent. School of Rock is a truly great program. It teaches music, but more than that it teaches teamwork, discipline, and how to show up when it matters. You can tell these kids are learning life skills along with guitar riffs and drum fills. Hawthorne Theatre was the perfect venue for this experience. It feels real and authentic, not polished or sterile. Being close to the stage made everything feel personal and immersive. The sound was solid, the flow of the event was smooth, and the whole space felt welcoming to families while still giving the kids a true concert experience. There is something powerful about watching your child perform in a real venue and realizing how much they have grown. We left feeling proud, emotional, and grateful for programs like this that give kids a place to shine. Highly recommend School of Rock and Hawthorne Theatre. This was more than a concert. It was a memory we will carry for a long time.
