The wine selection at this Dan's is beyond brill. I used to be a wine waster (aka waiter), so I tend to salivate over shiraz, perspire over pinot, celebrate over cabernet, vacillate over verdehlo (Ashbrook is my fave... is there really any other white worth bothering with?) and go zany over zinfandel. They're all here: Jim Barry's Armagh, Henschke's Hill of Grace, Penfolds 707 (better than Grange), Elderton's Command, Cape Mentelle's Zinfandel, Houghton's Jack Mann, Grant Burge's Meshach... There is one drawback to this Dan's though. Staffing. There's usually 1-2 people manning the rego's, which is fine and dandy when it aint busy (and it normally isn't) but what happens when there's a flood of peeps? There isn't enough checkout space to handle any sort of capacity which is an in-the-back-of-the-head sort of worry, but a worry nonetheless. Having said that, it is Thornleigh, and even at Xmas time, there's no queues. But during the zombie apocalypse? better bring your crossbow son! The coldroom also isn't the greatest. They have the usuals like most Dan's, but if you want a boutique by the case you could die of frostbite.

Jim's is close to home and the cheapest bottle-o for miles…read more And Jim's is a very good grog shop. There is a huge range of wine, beer and spirits. Jim's is very very good value. Quite often cheaper than Dan Murphy and they are good guys, except that they sometimes make their Mum look after the shop. They stock stuff you can't get elsewhere like Petersons Chardonnay and Scarborough White Label. There is a good range of aged wine and a comprehensive beer fridge. It was one of the first places in Sydney to stock Little Creatures Pale Ale and thus I have been going back with an unhealthy regularity. Cynthia and Mark's reviews are spot on and I intend to keep supporting Jim's even if it kills me.

The prices are nothing short of staggering, especially when you compare them to your usual bottle-o, or - shock horror - with restaurant prices! The savings are extraordinary, especially if you buy in bulk. And you should definitely buy in bulk. Stock up for Christmas. Stock up for summer barbecues. All it takes is one pirate sailing a trolley, with frigate-sinking quantites of rum, down an aisle to ruin it for everyone. C'mon now! We aren't pirates, you don't need every last vestige of rum in the store. Arrrrggghhhhh. Speaking of rums, I've been here times when there are literally only 2 or 3 varities of the stuff to choose from. Being a bit of a rum proselytiser this situation vexes me. With DM's buying power I want em all. Gunpowder, Kraken, Gosling Black Seal - and yes - Ron Zacapa, especially if you stock Ron Jeremy... The Dan's is in a great location, it's ground floor right next to the car park, and two doors down from Woolies, so you can do all your shopping without having to worry about the rest of the shops. What also helps is it is well staffed. Despite being super biz, the lines move quick. There might be 4 or 5 checkout staff zipping peeps through which is the big plus here.

Take the bottle it into Empty Lane, and be pampered by more friendly staff. The best cheese board selection I've ever tasted, complete with locally sourced produce. A fantastic place to catchup with friends, or a first, second and third date. Highly recommended.

Things you know, things you've heard about, and then just the other thousands of beverages! I was impressed by the tasting stations, although I never seem to be in-store when these are in full swing. As I'm not a big drinker I like the tasting notes that are scattered on the shelves. Makes me a little more informed & a good way to explore new labels.
