Dr. Olej Krijanovski in my opinion is one of the best hematology oncologists in the Bay Area. I met Dr. Oleg Krijanovski (they call him Dr. "K") in October of 2025, after my hematologist told me she wanted to transfer my care to him because he is a specialist in his field and has vast experience and knowledge in advanced treatment therapies for blood disorders. It was a difficult time for me. The medication I took (hydroxyurea) that controlled by blood platelets since 2012, stopped working. My hematologist recommended that I consult with Dr. Oleg Krijanovski, and to prepare for the meeting she gave me a pamphlet to read about a drug called Besremi - an injectable interferon therapy used to treat various blood disorders. I entered the meeting with Dr. Oleg Krijanovski feeling extreme anxiety and uncertainty and left the meeting with all my questions answered, feeling heard, and feeling hopeful. He was easy to talk to, respectful and showed empathy. The doctor also has an amazing team that works together to provide excellent patient care. In October 2019, my 94 year old mother, Bennie Mae Thomas, was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, by Dr. Krijanovski. While it was quite a shock to me at first, I didn't let on. He proceeded to tell my mom and me the method of treatment she would be receiving. I was most impressed by what he said to assure her that she was going to be ok. He said "I won't give you any less care than I would a 30 year old. I have treated people your age and they did well". He was so assuring until my mom responded "Doctor, I have faith in you and God and I want you to do whatever it takes, because I wan to live". She never missed an appointment, never once was she nauseated, the pain in her knees and back went away when she had her first treatment. When we were in his office, we never felt rushed. He always ended the visit by asking us if we had questions for him. I am pleased to say, that as of Thursday, June 17, she is Cancer Free. Thank you Dr. K. for all you have done for my mother. Dr. Oleg Krijanovski, "Dr. K" as many call him, is one of the Bay Area's, if not the world's, finest hematology oncologists. I met him almost four years ago as a stage-four lymphoma patient. He was my "second opinion" and immediately became the lead doctor in my battle with cancer. His winsome positive outlook was crucial to helping me face my disease with hope. He, along with his brilliant team, tackled my lymphomas on all fronts. With training at 2nd Moscow Medical Institute, Russia and University of Michigan, this highly educated doctor of hematology was able to put me at ease in my bleak situation. We teamed up at fighting the cancer, and he successfully moved me into remission. As my many questions surfaced, Dr. Krijanovski answered them honestly, tenderly, and in an informed manner. He called in experts in other fields and orchestrated a treatment plan that was comprehensive with my best interest in mind at all times. I trust and respect his ideas and thorough research. He helped me to recognize moments of celebration in my battle with lymphoma. Even four years later, he is still masterfully managing my follow-up. I was a 66 year old woman when I was diagnosed with stage 3-c rectal cancer. One of the luckiest days of my life is when I started treatment with Dr. K. He put together a treatment plan that had me working with one of the best radiation oncologist in the Sutter system as well a highly skilled surgeon. Every necessary test was performed in a timely manner and consistently monitored by Dr. K. When chemotherapy treatment began Dr. K's positive and caring attitude was very helpful in reducing my anxiety and fear. During the treatment process it was necessary to be hospitalized several times for blood transfusions and gastrointestinal issues, and Dr. K was always right by my side. Six to eight months after chemo treatment concluded and I continued with follow up visits and tests it was discovered that the cancer had metastasized to my right lung. Again, a treatment plan was designed that included radiation and chemotherapy. And, again, Dr. K was positive and supportive, but as for me I was tired of being sick from the chemo. I began to feel very discouraged, and at one point I made it known that I wanted to stop treatment all together. I found Dr. K through reviews when I was searching for a new oncologist for my father. His previous oncologist was forgetful and seemed aloof, and as my father's CEA levels were going up, it was important to find someone who was highly competent. When we first met with Dr. K, he informed us that even if my father's colon cancer had metastasized--as we had feared--he had a mutation that would probably mean that the tumor would be responsive to immunotherapy. This is something that his previous oncologist NEVER mentioned, as she said his only option for treatment would be chemotherapy. A couple months later, our worst fears were realized, and it was discovered that my father's colon cancer had metastasized to his mesentery, and while he was given the option of surgery to remove the tumor, my father refused because there would be a possibility that he would be sent home with a permanent colostomy bag. Ultimately, upon my father's insistence to forgo surgery, Dr. K agreed to start him on immunotherapy, despite the fact that it seemed his new tumor was large and growing quickly. This was almost two years ago and since then, my father's tumor has shrunk significantly and life has returned to him, all thanks to Dr. K and his team, including Carrie and Nate who are extremely empathetic and helpful. Without Dr. K's expertise, the person I love the most in this world would not be here today. Oleg Krijanovski, M.D., is a brilliant, no-nonsense, and relentless battler against blood cancers. Two years ago he saved my father's life against all odds with his tireless assault on my father's leukemia. As a result, "Dr. K" as he is known to many of his patients, is a hero to our family. When my father was diagnosed with leukemia, I stopped working and took him everywhere to find the doctor I thought would give him the best chance to live. After checking everywhere else, we went with Dr. Krijanovski, and it turned out to be the best decision of our lives. Here's the story: In September of 2012 my otherwise very healthy 77-year old father was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). His white blood cell count was non-existent. We were told that he would likely have died in a matter of weeks if we didn't get him into some kind of treatment within that period of time. Because he lived in Berkeley, we started at Alta Bates with one of Dr. Krijanovski's colleagues. We then took him to Stanford and UCSF second opinions on diagnosis and treatment options. The Stanford oncologist with whom we met said his treatment plan would be aimed toward getting my dad another six or at the most 12 months, and would mainly focus on keeping my father comfortable for that time. He said that treating my father with more aggressive chemotherapy to have a better chance of getting my dad into remission would either kill my father, or weaken him so much that his remaining life would not be worthwhile. The plan from UCSF was a little more aggressive. Still, they were also not really talking about the possibility of getting my father into remission and having him live years longer. I recall most of the literature giving him maybe a 15% chance of two-year survival, at best. But frankly, it may have been worse than that - I tried not to pay too much attention to the numbers after a while they were so discouraging. A few days later, my dad met Dr. K at Alta Bates. Dr. Krijanovski agreed with the other physicians we had seen that the survival statistics for men my father's age with ALL were not good, and that aggressive chemotherapy would be very challenging to a man of his age. However, he stopped short of telling my dad it was not worth trying. Dr. K explained that since my dad was so healthy he would treat him like he was 60 instead of 77. He advising using a chemo regime designed for juveniles that was less intense than full on adult chemo, but far more aggressive than what Stanford or UCSF was proposing. We decided to go with Dr. K and his more aggressive treatment plan. The 10 weeks of intensive chemotherapy in the hospital was everything we were told it would be. My dad was so sick, there were days he could barely talk. Along the way, he developed a fungal pneumonia and had to be transferred to the ICU for several days. However, throughout the ordeal, I watched Dr. K and the other skilled physicians at Alta Bates undertake a tight-wire act between keeping the chemo turned up high enough to kill the cancer but not so high that he could not endure it. The constant decision-making process Dr. K went through fighting for my dad's life was simply a thing to behold. He handled my dad's entire hospitalization with a strength, focus and calmness that is the kind of thing you dream of if you had to be this sick and had to put your life in your physician's hands. During this time, I basically saw Dr. K take my father's cancer by the neck like a champion fighter, and grab it, shake it and beat it so relentlessly and skillfully, that ultimately it was the cancer, not my dad, that gave up. It felt very much to me that Dr. K simply willed my dad through the ordeal by out-working and out-thinking the cancer cells and the other disease processes that my dad battled in his immune-compromised state. Today my father remains in complete remission from his ALL. He has regained much of his strength and has returned to much of his normal life, all thanks to Dr. K. There are not words to describe the gratitude my family and I feel for Dr. K and his team for this gift. If you or a loved one has leukemia or lymphoma, by all means see what Stanford and UCSF can offer, especially if there is any question about your diagnosis. (In my father's case, the diagnosis was very difficult. And as much as a Berkeley native hates to admit it, the Stanford cancer pathology team nailed it brilliantly. For that too we will always be thankful.) But as far as where you decide to go for your treatment and the best chance to beat the cancer, you should definitely consider the fighter from Russia in the red trunks, our hero, Dr. Krijanovski. read more

I'm a 52 year old patient and I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. I was lucky to be referred to Dr.Krijanovski for short I call him Dr.K . From day one he run all the necessary tests to be sure about his diagnosis and plan for treatment. He contacted all my doctors and his own colleagues to build a plan of treatment. From that moment I felt like I was in great hands. We talked about the plan of treatment and he suggested I was a candidate for an Autologous Stem Cell Transplant. We started the treatment and made adjustments along the way. And 9 months later I was starting the process for transplant. At every visit Dr.K took the time to listen to all my concerns and answer all of my questions never rushed. His team is as good as he is, from the front desk to the pharmacist everyone always greeted me with a smile and ready to help. Dr. Krijanovski has been my treating physician for acute leukemia for over three years. Of all the many doctors I have seen, he is the one to whom I would give the highest recommendation. In fact, even my transplant doctor at Stanford has commented many times on how knowledgable Dr. Krijanovski is in the area of transplants for leukemia. Dr. Krijanovski saved my life; that is not hyperbole. I was an otherwise healthy person who in 2014 began to experience debilitating headaches, global aphasia and finally complete loss of cognition. My medical condition was misdiagnosed for seven months by a series of doctors. It was only when I was delirious and admitted yet again to the ER that one of Dr. Krijanovski's colleagues called him in for a consultation. Dr. Krijanovski worked around the clock and ultimately diagnosed that I was suffering from an extremely rare and aggressive form of lymphoma. He was able to make this diagnosis because of his background as a pathologist, his extensive experience as an oncologist handling difficult and unusual cases, and his up-to-date review of the medical literature in the area. As soon as Dr. Krijanovski made the diagnosis, he immediately started me on high-dose chemotherapy and the most debilitating effects of the lymphoma began to recede. If Dr. Krijanovski had not made the difficult diagnosis and started me on the correct course of chemotherapy when he did, I would not be here today. Dr. Krijanovski has remained my treating physician throughout this process - with one notable exception that I hope will be addressed. This summer I had a bone marrow transplant (also referred to as a stem cell transplant) at Stanford Medical Center. It appears that the transplant was successful and at this point I am "cancer-free." Despite the fact that Dr. Krijanovski is a renown transplant doctor, Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation discontinued offering bone marrow transplants several years ago, and now patients such as myself must go elsewhere to receive the procedure. While my attending physician at Stanford is himself first-rate and consulted with Dr. Krijanovski (who he holds in high regard) at critical decision-making junctures, the transition between doctors and particularly medical systems was not seemless, and in fact led to inefficiencies and inconveniences. Future lymphoma/leukemia patients in the East Bay might consider this fact when selecting Sutter-affiliated oncologists. Sutter would do well to reconsider its previous decision to terminate its transplant program. That being said, I fully credit Dr. Krijanovski's selection of my particular chemo regime and insistence that a transplant was a necessary part of my treatment to the remarkable fact that I am considered "cancer-free" today. read more
