Transparent Pricing Matters…read more I requested a quote to replace an existing bathtub with a walk-in shower, including a folding seat and grab bars. The renovation area was approximately 15 square feet, making this a relatively modest bathroom remodel. The salesperson was courteous and professional during the initial visit. However, the tone of the meeting changed when I began asking questions about the pricing. Rather than providing a clear breakdown of labor, materials, and installation costs, I was told that the high price was largely due to the "system" I had selected, even though my preference was simply an off-white subway tile finish. The quoted price was $35,441, which equates to approximately $2,363 per square foot for a 15-square-foot renovation. For context, current residential construction estimates place the cost of building a new modest home--excluding land, foundation, utilities, and site work--at approximately $160 to $185 per square foot. While bathroom remodeling naturally carries a much higher cost per square foot than new construction because of demolition, plumbing, waterproofing, and finish work, this quote represented a multiple of those benchmark construction costs that I found difficult to justify without a detailed explanation. The proposal itself was handwritten and included what appeared to be arbitrary discounts. I was told that if I wrote a check that day, the price would be reduced to $30,310, a reduction of more than $5,000. The discounts were not supported by any written pricing schedule or documented promotional program, leaving the impression that the pricing was highly negotiable rather than based on transparent costs. Another aspect of the experience that I found uncomfortable was the sales process itself. The salesperson arrived expecting to sit at my dining room table to present products and conduct an extended sales presentation. My objective was simply to obtain a quote for the project, not to participate in a lengthy in-home sales session. Approximately 24 hours after the appointment, I began receiving high-pressure follow-up phone calls encouraging me to move forward with the project. Overall, while the salesperson was initially personable and professional, the combination of an exceptionally high quote, vague pricing justification, handwritten pricing with immediate-signing discounts, and aggressive follow-up sales tactics left me with concerns about the company's pricing transparency and sales practices. Consumers considering similar projects should request a detailed written breakdown of costs, obtain multiple competitive quotes, and be cautious of substantial "today only" discounts that encourage an immediate purchasing decision.
