Lots of friendly people I've met here so far and it's great for all ages. You can walk the dogs around the park too. This is free so no one mandates the vaccines or pets but it works out fine for me. Our pups enjoyed their visit very much and although the small body of water didn't look the cleanest, we still let them cool off and enjoy a swim. The picnic tables in a shaded area were appreciated on a hot day. Bring lot's of drinking water for you and your pet! Also, as with most dog parks, remember that any toys you bring for fetching are likely going to be "fair game" to the many other dogs you might see here.

The park itself is not as big as other forest preserves, but still big enough to be secluded and peaceful. The winding trails take you through heavily wooded areas and prarie areas... It's not a humongous one, but there's plenty of ground to cover and nature to see. Klehm Arboretum has a respectable collection of flowers, plants, and trees. A lot of family activities. There's often some kind of special event going on for children and family things. A lot of the gardens are specific toward one plant species or a family. It of course has better viewing in the spring and summer, but any time of the year has something to check out. The visitor's center is the first place most people come to. Get a map. You can find out where all the gardens are and which paths to go on. It has a pretty cool pond garden in front you should stop at. There's a Prehistoric Garden featuring a T-Rex. Also children will enjoy the Fountain Garden. This is a way to cool off in summer. Even though the programs say there's an admission charge, you can still usually get in free. It's not like there's anyone at the gate. This is best in the summer, but there's also later year activities like hay mazes and whatever.

I like Lakewood because it gets super pretty in the fall and there is no place to swim. So when the weather is getting cold I don't have to tempt my dog who loves swimming by walking her past a pond. There are multiple trails and I've never had a problem with owners not watching their dogs there. Everyone's friendly and the dogs are so happy there. Whether you are walking the trail or hanging out in the front area the dogs are getting great exercise and you get to enjoy the pretty nature.
