If your goal is to tire your dog out, practice his or her social skills and get some exercise, this is a great place that is easy to get to and manageable in size for an off-leash outing. We've come during several seasons and Winter is by far my favorite time to bring our dogs. I've noticed each time we've come here, there were a considerable amount of bigger dogs, so as others have mentioned, be aware if you have a smaller dog or dog that isn't sociable, as this might not be the place for you unless you use the smaller gated, training area. The back wooded trail area is nice to take walks with your dogs but it can be slippery when there is ice and muddy when it has rained. It can also get buggy back there in the Summer time, but offers nice shade. For the most part, dog owners visiting here seem pretty friendly and keep watch over their dogs. But we have seen a couple owners who didn't follow their dogs into the back woods and their dogs were aggressive towards ours and others. It is my opinion, and hopefully others too, that responsible dog owners should keep watch over their dogs to avoid any issues, but it doesn't always seem to happen here because of the wooded area. If you are using a ball, toy or stick to practice retrieving, just know that toys are fair game and shareable at anytime. Don't bring your dog's favorite toy or it will likely get taken. There are pit toilet style bathrooms on site and parking is very close. We will definitely be back though and enjoyed our last visits with our dogs and our daughter's dog.

Thank you Kane County Forest Preserve for providing a lovely fenced in park for dogs and dog owners. I had been to Schweitzer Woods when there was no sign to announce the entry and the driveway (If u could call it that) needed an off road vehicle. Everything is top notch. The shelter is enormous and is wonderful for when the weather changes as it often does in Illinois. I have now been on the trail and often prefer to the crazy fish bowl that the park becomes at times in the evening and weekends. You cannot make people do right. Irs a shame that you have to tell someone to pick up u know what. Or watch them as they walk into the park and dont pick up after their dog on the way in. A little about Emily Schweitzer: Emily Schweitzer gave a most beautiful gift to her fellow citizens of Kane County. A deed for her 160 acre property arrived at the Forest Preserve in December 1989. It was Emily Schweitzer's wish that the rolling kame and kettle country be preserved as open space. The property has oak forests, crop land, hay meadows and marshes. A beautiful Edwardian house and matching dog kennel are situated in the southeast corner of the property. Miss Schweitzer's only request was to maintain the property as passive open space. She passed away in 2001 at the age of 89. Check out this video about Emily and the property. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0qs1v_eSy0 This park is a priviledge and at times, it is taken advantage of. Please consider investing in mulch for the dirt areas. Dogs roll in it and get very dirty. Grass is also non existent and needs some help next season.. Bring water, bowls, poop bags, etc. You will need it.

IT"S FREE!!! Can get muddy. I like that it has trails in the woods and in the fields outside the fence.

Nice park, but tick central. Each time we came back with 2-3 ticks. Even on the outside trail it's infested with them.

Open during winter? I have high energy husky mix and want her to have space to run when her daycare gets packed... not sure how safe this is although.

Yes. We've been there in the Winter and while it was snowing. Our dogs loved it. Although everytime we were there there seemed to be mostly bigger dogs. Ours are over 100 lbs so they didn't seem bothered. I'm not sure how a smaller dog might feel in… Read more

Plenty of different trails, the river, LOTS of space and beautiful scenery too. My wife and I walked around for a couple of hours while the dogs ran from one spot to the next. We made the mistake of going right when we left the parking area... Left was a better choice. But the area that is not part of the unleashed dog area is still beautiful. We walked out over the river on the newly constructed bridge and just took in the views. Then walking back we found another path back into the unleashed area which brought us to the river, which my dogs were all about, sprinting directly into the water before we could even catch up, it was a warm day. Overall I love this park, and it is well worth the trip for a nice walk. Highly recommend that anyone with a dog who loves to run, get wet, play with other dogs or just walk with you try this place!

We live in Streamwood, and it's worth the drive to take my dog here. The red gate road construction DID cut it in half, but didn't reduce the size of the park. They created a path for people on bicycles and joggers, that starts from the dog park parking lot, and goes across to the other side of red gate road, where the trails are flat. When you walk past a certain point, a sign warns to have your dog on a leash so as not to disturb bicyclist and joggers. Great for training your dog, because of the distractions, but no access to the river on this side. The parking lot side has trails, some that go down to the Fox River on steep downward inclines. If you want your dog to swim, stay on the parking lot side. Never been here before? Want to go to the river? Start out on the bike trail, but turn left at the fork. March yourself and your dog down the wide trail to the fox river, where there are several different places where you can throw a toy in the water for your dog to retrieve. But be forewarned: in the summer months there is a lot of boat traffic on the river on weekends, which can bother a dog that is retrieving in the water. Your legs will get a workout because there's now way to get back up to the parking lot without walking up some trails with good upward inclines. Expect many passersby, as people with dogs jog by, or people with dogs stop and let your dog make a new friend or two. My dog loves running and swimming here, and even if he doesn't swim, we enjoy the lengthy trails on both sides. Highly recommended! The bonus is - we've never come home with a tick on either one of us so far!

A few short miles past the Motorola campus on Algonquin Road headed west, you can see dogs frolick in this spacious area. It also makes a great place to socialize for dog owners, although the dogs clearly rule the roost here. Here, we mostly know the humans as "so-and-so" 's mom or dad. The camaraderie is solid, and there's even an organized dining out event staged lately. There are rules to follow in the park, but they are so common-sense. Pick up your dog's poop. Dogs need to pass all shots mandated by the Hoffman Estates park district. You can sign up at the rec center located on the lot. If you're a resident of HE, it's $40 annual fee. Otherwise, you pay a little extra. I understand Palatine has its own dog park at the Harper College grounds. Absolutely a great investment for dog lovers and owners. My dog thinks so.

The trails are all crushed rock and easy to navigate whether on a bike or foot. There are no steep grades or climbs here. There are quite a few groves of pine trees throughout the preserve that are just a little too perfectly spaced and lined up to make you think they just grew that way naturally. Pretty though to hike through if the sun is hot and you need some shade. This is a nice local preserve but I do appreciate preserves with more variety - Cuba Marsh is flat and very sunny!! I tend to avoid it on the hotter summer days because I have a very healthy appreciation for shade!! If you want a nice hike or bike ride and love the sun, Cuba Marsh is definitely worth a visit. I prefer this preserve in the Spring, Fall, and cooler days when the temps and humidity don't get very high. If you are a sun-lover, this is the place to be on a hot day!!
