When I first moved to Olympia, I had a job and my wife didn't. She was home a lot, getting lonely and one week decided to check out a church. She read the ads in the newspaper (this was back when there were newspapers), and picked the only one with a website listed (this was back when websites were a "new thing"). She really liked it, and the next week she insisted I go with her. I was raised Christian, but became disillusioned when I grew older, because there seemed to be many more paths than just one. I walked into OUUC, and looked at the banners on the wall - there were 7, from most of the major world religions. I thought to myself "These people GET IT". The service was great - very thought provoking - and the people were excellent to talk to. That was 17 years ago. It's still an excellent church, which opens minds, fills hearts and transforms lives. Very welcoming, as I was greeted with a handshake and a smile. But as with the other reviews, I do feel a little bit outnumbered age and race wise, but the messages have been good so far at the services I've attended. I'll continue to go. As I do feel welcome and feel great supporting this congregation. read more

I agree there are many older white middle to upper class members. But being no where near that class I still feel welcome each week I attend services. I have NEVER felt judged by anybody. It is "difficult" to get on committees and participate with things I may have wanted to but was never informed of. There are gatherings between each service with coffee and snacks. The minister is available to chat with as well. The services definitely do not revolve around "Fire and Brimstone" far from, generally the service is revolved around LOVE for your fellow man and LOVE for yourself. It is a pleasant mind opening service which enables one self to open their minds and hearts. read more

After talking with my son who attended the service too, I'll give it one more star. He said that he is not a church-goer but would consider attending OUU because he appreciated the liberal message of the talk and readings when most churches tend to be more conservative and self-righteous old-time religion. I can see his point and was happy to get his input to temper mine. Also I realize that during the summer the offerings tend to be more limited and disjointed. read more

this church is interesting. unitarian universalist churches are supposed to be very liberal, as this one is, but often face challenges of trying to approach that from a largely white, upper-middle-class place. coming into this church from a slightly different angle than that, we spent a lot of time trying to work with the church to be more inclusive, but ended up giving up. it seemed like the church spent a lot of time trying to open up to others, but the main problem in that was that they continuously worked at that from a very much Us vs. Them perspective. read more

I love this church community. Before I came here (because my husband thought we needed a church) I thought I had no use for church or listening to a minister speak. Coming to OUUC was like coming home to the family I never before knew I had been missing. No one tries to cram just one way of thinking or believing down your throat, but we do have basic principles in common. What a rich history and fabulous tradition I never knew about before! read more

That my daughter needs to put it back. Who does that? It's a price tag. There were numerous things in the store that didn't have a price tag. We didn't complain. The lady held my daughter's hand and said, "Are you going to cry?" That's so rude and disrespectful. She kept on saying, "Are you going to cry?" to a 1-year-old? My daughter says a few words. She doesn't know how to talk. My husband and I felt so sad when Lori did that to our daughter. The lady never apologized for her actions. My husband went back inside to tell Lori that what she did was wrong. You don't touch other people's children and yell at them. My daughter didn't break anything. In addition to my original review, I had the experience of using the garbage/dump portion of the…read morewaste management facility today. After dropping off some household chemicals, motor oil, and antifreeze at the Hazohouse, I headed up to the garbage drop off. I was nervous at first because I thought it was going to be a huge process to drop off my stuff but you just drive in past the dog park and head up to the first weight station. Wait for your turn and then drive up to the booth and have your drivers license or ID ready. They will scan your ID and then give you a card with a barcode on it which you need to hold onto so you can show it at the booth at the exit. Then you wait for an open parking stall. Most people backed into the stalls because it's easier to push your refuse over the rails down into the dump container below. It's actually pretty organized. I thought it was going to be a huge landfill that you have to find a spot and where the least amount of trash is and toss your stuff. It wasn't like that at all. I had a Uhaul 10ft truck and I'm actually glad the rails that prevent you from failing into the container are there because they help you get the leverage you need to toss large objects without hurling yourself into the container as well. Still...be safe and don't toss with too much force and make sure your footing is good so you don't slip. Kids have to stay within your vehicle for safety reasons. They have a separate section for yard waste and large appliances, so look for the signage. I kind of hated to use the dump to toss my furniture but after calling Goodwill, Value Village, and Habitat for Humanity and all of them saying they weren't currently taking furniture or being too selective on what furniture they'd take, I decided to just get rid of it in one go. I'm glad I did because the process was easy. Once you're done tossing your junk, head to the exit, give the pay booth your barcode card and pay. The receipt they give you even shows your starting weight versus your ending weight so you know what you're paying for. $64 for two full U-Haul loads of furniture, trash, bedding, and household items. I felt that was reasonable and saved me a lot of time. I also found out that you can recycle styrofoam down by the Hazohouse along with all the other items I listed in my original review.

I post this in response to a posting that has recently come to my attention. The posting is by puck f and is dated 8/25/06. I think I may recall Puck, although I can't say that I knew her very well. I have been a member of the OUUC congregation for several years and have very much appreciated the space this congregation creates for exploring religious ideas and experiences, and for promoting member's involvement in social and political issues. I think one thing that may describe the UU faith is a quote which I understand comes from the Gospel of Thomas (one of the gospels that never made it into the Bible) that goes something like this: "Show me your faith and I will show you my works, and it is by my works that you will know my faith." Maybe an earlier way of saying "you can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?" I think this is a goal of this congregation, of which I'm sure we often fall short. But at least it is a goal, and I think we try and sometimes succeed, too. At the same time I can see how some people could be put off. We probably all feel that way from time to time, even some of the church's oldest members. And I'm sure we can all learn how to make our church more welcoming to new members. I wonder if Puck would be willing to share any practical suggestions as to how we could improve. I certainly can't make any promises that we can implement any of them, but we can certainly take anything she has to say under advisement, and maybe we can do better next time. We cannot be all things to all people, but we can always find ways to improve ourselves. I think we would appreciate any constructive criticism anyone has to offer. read more
