I have been a parent at Nellya for the last 7 years. Pros: your child will develop their bodies,…read moretheir discipline, their lifelong friendships, their strategic thinking skills, and their world views. My daughter's love for fencing has been fostered here, and I thank God for that. Nellya athletes consistently have top level results...and have National, World, and Olympic medal fencers. They have results under their belt! Cons: fencing isn't a cheap sport. It's not like you're letting your child join the school's basketball or football team. This is a serious sport...requiring equipment, physical maintenance, private lessons, and travel expenses. Is it worth it, YES! Besides the Pros mentioned above, it's a great way to make your child stand out in the world (especially to colleges). It's best to go on in and have a look...talk with the coaches and other parents.

I bought a groupon voucher for four fencing classes for myself. The voucher costs $42…read more At first I was not sure whether they have adult classes, because no such class was listed on their website. But in the Q&A section of the groupon deal, the owner said "Classes are for adults with no experience and are offered Mon and Wed. at 6 p.m". I am in my early 20s, I thought fencing might be really fun so I grabbed the deal. On first day, I realized I am the only adult in the class, the youngest student in the foil class was in primary school and oldest (beside me) was in high-school. And even the youngest student had one+ year experience with foil so I was pretty the only (and oldest) one in the class without any clue. I thought not coming back for the rest of the 3 classes, but I do not want to waste the money. In the second class, another clueless adult showed up (apparently also misguided by the Q&A section of groupon), and I thought I have found company. That adult didn't turn up again:( I still give the place 5 stars because I think the practice would be fantastic for children (if I would be given the chance to learn fencing when I was a child, I would be very happy) and it is my fault that I did not do my research thoroughly before I bought the deal. The coach was very strict and experienced. Most of the children I believe want to compete nationally and the skill could help them to enter top universities.

My child had fenced with this club for roughly a year. We initially decided on this club since it…read moreis the most convenient one for us location wise. It is sharing a gym space with a private school. So there is no permanent strips. Every time the kids spent 15-20 mins taping down the strips and setting up equipment before the practice. Then the practice starts with warm up. The warm up is usually lead by 13-15 year old fencers not the coach. So It is pretty random and unstructured. After the warm up, it is pretty much just open fencing with kids having bouts with each other. Coaches usually just stand around and give minimal instructions / directions other than yelling occasionally at the kids who stand around to go find someone to fence with. If you want actual fencing instructions or learning, you will have to pay for a private session. The Tuesday session is supposed to be for better fencers. But in reality it really depends on how much parents help out ("contribute") at the club to decide if you child will be invited to the Tuesday session or not. Yes. In addition to paying the monthly fee, you are also expected to volunteer at various club events and your child will be treated accordingly. My child likes the other kids who go there and made some friends. So we stayed there for a year and treated it as a place for her to hang out socially and get a bit exercise. This club is great for this purpose but it is not for kids who are more serious about learning about fencing. we have moved on to better club since.
