I have never been so rudely spoken to in the manner I had to endear and out of all things in front of my 5 year old and 9 year old. The very first time I have ever stepped foot into a Michael's buisness/store was tonite. My children and I were minding our own, just shopping, all of a sudden a man with black hair stepped in front of me and said its time to go, I look at him cause I knew the store wasn't closed yet, and he said I need to leave and not cause a scene, I looked at him confused and I said what did we do, the man then stated "my boss caught you breaking things" I said We didn't break anything, I questioned again, what did we do & what did we break? The man again said its best you leave before there's problems, and we cause a scene. As I was walking out the lady at the registered mean mugged me and stared me down like there was no tomorrow. She has blonde/light brown long hair. As my girls and I were in Michael's store some lady, older lady with blonde/white hair up in a bun kept coming up to my girls and I asking if there was anything in particular I was looking for, I replied no and mentioned it was my very first time in the store and you have your glitter on sale buy one get one half off and that I create tumblers and I was just excited about the glitter sale. The lady again mentioned let her know and then she mentioned we have been their for awhile. Im a single mother, who recently just got into a place 7 weeks go, where recently we were homeless couch surfing for a lil over a year. I still have no idea why my children and I were targets. read more

The close for one hour for lunch! the only thing they do is hang a sign "close for lunch be back at 3:00" This is very inconvenient, if you must close for lunch, add this information to your hours so people lwho drive a long distance, are prepared to avoid going on your lunch brake!!! They have an amazing selection of linocut inks/carving materials, and though I'm not a fountain pen person, their fountain ink collection is so beautiful I always stop to admire it. They have artwork from local artists on the walls, and the employees are kind and helpful. read more

Love this place! I've been going to Olyphant since before the change in ownership. It was already a great spot then, but lately it feels really revitalized with a great presentation, selection and great range of products for both professional artists and those dipping their toes in the water. The new selection of Art Books, especially the Studio Ghibli titles, really impressed me. Definitely worth checking out! read more

I stopped by here a few weeks back when looking for some special pens for addressing my wedding invitations. The shop is right in downtown Olympia and is a perfect place to spend a little time.. or a lotta time depending on how craftsy you be feeling. Go ahead, grab a coffee on the way and mosey around looking at all their neat art materials, sounds like a Saturday well spent to me. It's a small shop but is packed full of materials for painting, sketch, calligraphy, and much more. When we came in looking for the pens, we weren't sure what color would look good on the metallic copper envelopes (woes of a bride). The guy that helped us provided excellent customer service in helping us select the color and the tip width for the desired effect. Price for the items was very reasonable and I've gotten some great use out of them. I very much appreciated them helping to make this wedding planning step a breeze. read more

What they do well: Great local store. Their prices are basically the same as Amazon. From time to time something I need will be one or two dollars less expensive online, but it's not worth the hassle or the wait. I go here for anything that I can and only opt for online sources and other stores when I must. Overall their selection of supplies and tools is pretty big. What could be better: Not a great selection of Sable or natural blend watercolor brushes, not a good selection of metallic inks, and the budget watercolor paint selection is not really up to par (check Amazon for Japanese watercolors). Also, they don't carry a high quality locking compass. The up side is that they will help you find what you need if they don't have it, and they won't sell you something that won't work for your purposes. Overall: A++. Super helpful. Great selection. Just call first to see if they have what you need. They probably do. read more

Great selection of pencils and colored pencils, it's so nice to buy open stock instead of being forced to order a large bundle online or travel all the way to Seattle. Definitely a better selection of fine art supplies compared to the local craft stores. Huge selection of paper! Even some brands of supplies I've only seen online. GO HERE FOR YOUR ART STUFF!!! They have a bunch of really cool stuff for everyone kinda. As far as prices go, I have no idea. Some stuff there you might be better off getting else where, but there is ALSO A LOT of stuff that is priced SUPER reasonably. I have been using children's art supplies for the last 15 years apparently, and after almost ruining the last painting I did, I said, "FUCK IT, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, I DESERVE SOME REAL ARTIST SHIT. SO, I thought i'd pretend to be cool and go into the art store after doing some research on watercolor paper. I did, and got one of the watercolor paper rolls they had. When I got home I realized that shit was too thin (even for paper) and decided I was gonna have to take it back. My only problem (or so I thought) was that I said I didn't need a receipt. About 2 weeks went by before I actually got a chance to go in and talk to someone. JB was the gentleman who helped me when I went back. He did not previously check me out, but said it was OK that I didn't have a receipt and that he recognized the roll from their shop. He happened to be placing an order when I came in and he went out of his way to find what I ORIGINALLY wanted and ordered it for me! He took the original roll back I had bought, and only charged me the difference in rolls once it came in! Tiger was the lovely young lady who helped not me, but my husband when it came in. Even though she didn't originally handle the return of the "wrong" roll, or, ordering of the new roll, she knew what she was doing lol. Every transaction I've had there has been smooth and very accommodating on my end. If you're going to spend any money on art stuff this is the spot to do it!!! THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH! read more
