It's pretty confusing getting into the store. Enter through the doors below the Spice Nation sign and you come into a long hallway. Walk to the end of the hallway and the entrance is on the left. The store itself is a big, dimly lit, warehouse-like room. I came looking for reasonably-priced spices, but I also found their small selection of produce was also a great deal. There are aisles of snack foods, spices, teas and coffees. Lentils, beans, rice, and flours are offered in bulk. There are a few freezers in the back with assorted frozen foods. Confusing on the outside, simple on the inside. There seems to be a name change to Spice Nation(s) instead of Om India, although the original Indian text seems to remain. I've stopped in the parking lot previously and been confused by the various restaurant names and Value City Furniture on the end of the building. There is a small entrance west of the restaurants that leads to a hair salon, a restaurant, and a grocery store. The grocery store is not elaborate and reminds me of the discount stores of the 1980s where you could collect boxes to use for your purchases since they didn't supply bags. Everything is a bit rudimentary and not everything seems to be priced. I bought a number of the little Maggi Lemon Chili noodles for $3.00 and I'm not sure whether that was a good price these days or not. I haven't had them since I moved from Florida in 2008, and that place charged $0.33 each. They have a number of new and used DVDs and also a variety of CDs, cookware, and daily supplies. Also, they had the ready-to-heat products from Gits and MTR, which are good for people like me who weren't born Indian. The owner/clerk was ready to assist. read more

This is a decent sized Indian grocery that is hidden from plain sight. From the facade it looks as if it will be a small place as it only occupies one spot in a strip mall but this is just a hallway to access it. It is a shared hallway that also leads to a beauty salon of some sort and Udupi Café (a vegetarian Indian restaurant). The prices are good here and they should have most of your Indian needs in terms of pantry type items and frozen foods. Lately their fresh item section has been dwindling. They are down to the bare essentials in terms of produce and they have totally eliminated their meat department. I still like this place because of its obscurity and the general vibe. Small grocery behind Passage to India (pretty great vegetarian Indian food). Lots of spices, grains, etc. Bulk rice (esp. basmati) at good prices is why I started coming here. Lots of incense, music, too, along with a small frozen section, and a cooler full of fresh produce. Best part is the warm samosas and jalebi at the counter. Closest thing you can get to 'street food' in Indianapolis, and a reason to stop in! The samosas are nearly baseball-sized and generally spicy. Get one for now...and one for later. read more

As your leaving Spice Nation happy, full and loving all the food and wonderful spices just enjoyed hang a right as you leave. Om Market has friendly staff who can answer questions about products or which is best to recreate your favorite dishes. The store is large and has spacious, well organized aisles allowing room to browse comfortably. The staff puts me at ease asking questions about products and their supportive when shopping to recreate new dishes. A few other international markets aren't as open as Om to those not familiar with their products. Browse the cookbooks as you enter the store for your favorite or bring in your recipe and don't hesitate to ask questions. read more

I was home visiting Indianapolis last week and went to this store for the first time with my dad. We arrived to India Palace a little early and went in here to pass the time. I thought the building was interesting. I would like to go back and get my eyebrows threaded sometime. I'd also like to try Udupi since I have never been there. We went down the hall past those places and into the store. We each had a cart to lean on. I'm glad those were there! I was soon filling the cart, too! =) I didn't even get a close look at EVERYTHING in there, but I was quite amazed! All of the Indian snacks for cheap. The bags of mini samosas are one of my favorite. I also got a 4lb bag of red lentils for only $2.50 I think! My dad got me a nice incense burner for about 5 bucks and that was the most expensive thing we got. We had two bags stuffed with great stuff and it only cost just over $30. Try getting that much cool stuff at Whole Foods, which I LOATHE, or any other grocery for that matter, without paying an arm and a leg. They have everything from Bollywood movies and cds to skin care products, luggage, cookware... There was a huge frozen section I would like to hit next time. I never even heard of Naan pizza before. Lots of vacuum-sealed dinners on the shelf that were 3/$5! Huge bags of rice, fresh garlic and other produce. I could go on and on. This store is awesome!! Om is a nice little Indian grocery with a decent selection of fresh produce, canned and frozen items along with a selection of cooking implements. They have a large selection of rice of all varieties. I was there looking for dosa batter, of which they had a limited selection in a refrigerator near the front. Om is worth a visit if you are in the area. Patel Brothers has a significantly bigger selection, so they are my first choice. read more

A beautiful situation when you enter the doors of India plaza it's like you're walking into a bouquet of different traditions and stylings of foods the stuff is warm and approachable eager to help you and suggest. I recommend to you you check out their beautiful earlier array of amazing spaces in there freshest forms! We chose to purchase Bayleaf's from them on a trip before as well as Coumadin which is one of our favorite spices and you we open them and use them they were so pungent and so fresh that you need even maybe a quarter of the amount you would use from American spice jar. So we bought black peppercorns plenty of Himalayan salt and a myriad of different delicious spices of course we bought Tumerick because we use it in everything we can but we also bought something new called got him marsala. I recommend you go in and talk to them they will explain to you all the fabulous ways you could mix the spices to create a different and new delicious way of eating. At home we have decided not to have so much meat in our diet or useless and this way of cooking enables us to do that and always we get a wonderful clean parked at the end no leftovers! You can really rock when you are using this method of cooking there actually help you do it and certainly give you the best customer service you've ever seen in your life. I would like to also remember to add the Naan bread!!! You've never had anything in your life as delicious as this bread what we do at home is we take it out of the package how many pieces we'd like to have an early dinner tray you have two in our family so to each is nice and you just put some Ghee which is butter, with out the milk solids. Is very rich and quite nice we put a tablespoon of this into a sauce pan and just when it becomes warm like you would for a grilled cheese, you place the bread in the pan for a few seconds and then toss it over and toes both sides then you can't stop eating it! LOL it's the best way to eat this type of food. Enjoy yourselves also one more thing! Samosa's! You must try them!!! read more

ABSOLUTE WORST PLACE TO ORDER ONLINE. The order arrived almost 2 months after placing it. Customer service is a joke, they are completely oblivios to the emails and phone calls. When the order finally arrived it was incomplete. When I emailed about it, no response from Mr. Staven Calcuttawala regarding that either, even though I have proof in the form of 'USPS customs declaration form' signed by Mr. Calcuttawala himself. I brought a lot of items and faced below things There is a lot of items, which were old and may be out of expiry date. 80% of my purchased items were either expired or they were out of date already. Ok my experience here both times have been anything less than good! First off, when I had first entered, it was hot enough to rethink that African proverb about the "naked man who offers you his shirt! So I walked down this long hallway to finally get to the store! I'm going to be honest here, this was my second option after coming from the Indian store from across the street! I asked the owner for the brand of henna I always buy & he told me what isle! I looked at the price & it was a $1.00 more than across the street! So me being the frugal person that I am I asked him to price match me! What was so shocking instead of a simple yes or no, he goes into this long explanation of how expensive it is to order! I know that the Indian store across the street get it from the same supplier which is in Bangkok, India, so why is this guy trying to dupe me? I told him that I actually can get it alot cheaper online, but I didn't want to wait! I would have probably had a better chance in winning a game of Mandarin Chinese Scrabble, then to get this man to reason with me! To no avail, he FINALLY gave it to me for the price of his competitor. I usually prefer the other store, but they were completely out of stock of my henna. The lessen I learned was, one very common way of remaining ignorant is by paying too much attention to the speaker instead of what is being said! I could have had a much better experience had the man listened to me. In the beginning when I stated that I had just came from the store across the street due to them being out of my brand of henna. You would have thought that this alone would have made him want to earn my business. At the end of it all I finally purchased my henna & smelled the somasos, but based off of my experience I didn't give him another red cent of my money! If this man knew better then he'd do better! Next time I'll wait! I gave him 2 stars for two reasons. One, it was entertaining to say the least! I rellish in the stupidity of others, it actually reminds me that I need to dumb it down sometimes! Intelligence is not always received with style & grace! Smh! Two, I ended up winning anyway, although I ended up feeling like a "Benedict Arnold" at the end of it all!. I will vow from this day forward to stick to my "first love!" We all make mistakes, some more than others, but India place will not get a third chance from me!
