We have heard such good things about this international grocery store and had been planning to visit the store at Castleton. We were pleasantly surprised that there was a store much closer to us on the Southside. Of course we went inside to explore. They have so many international food but we were told this is the smallest store of there 3 locations. Parking was at a premium and as expected they had many shoppers on a weekday morning. The produce was beautiful and they had many varieties also. There is a fresh fish area and a meat area as well as a small restaurant in the back of the store. The employees were friendly and quite helpful in locating some items that we wanted. There is a large selection of fresh, frozen and canned items. Big big BIG fan of this grocery store for sure. They carry kimchi, seasoned seaweed, a lot of my Korean food staples, & so much more. If you're into bulgogi which I SOOO am ;), this place has a delightful marinade in a bottle. Yippee! Alls you gotta do, is follow the directions on the bottle for a quick meal. I betcha the marinade may be used as a dipping sauce too. How fun is that? A lot! This particular location is smaller than the one on Lafayette Road/38th street. Both places have amazing things that you can't find in a typical Kroger sort of store. Staff is always helpful tho you'll need to possess some patience, they're always busy. Fresh vegetables are very fabulous too. The bestest part is that the employees still adhere to the CDC recommendations in terms of masks. I was just there today & it is what I witnessed. Got some okra and it was the best quality, straight and no bruises or spoiled bits. Pretty good prices and lots of selection. If I'm in the area again I would definitely swing by. read more

I really enjoy shopping here and found a lot of things I have been looking for that I wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. I also think the quality is amazing for the price however some things can be overpriced. I'm always on the hunt for good international groceries. I want to know where the best place is for each kind of cuisine. I'm a regular at Viet Hua and One World. I kept hearing about Saraga so we went to the south side to give it a try. Saraga is trying to be a little bit of something for everyone, and as a result it's not a deep selection for anyone. However, it does have a good set of basics. It spans many different cuisines including several African and Middle Eastern staples (lots of types of flour on hand that I have not seen in other stores), some Northeast Asian (Chinese/Japanese/Korean), Mexican, and Southeast Asian. Where it shines is produce, and some staples like flours. I saw lots of fresh produce including items like Thai eggplants, Taiwanese okra, and lots of greens. Everything looked fresh and high quality. I also saw some staple pantry foods such as specialty flours and dried beans that I have not seen in any other international markets in Indy. If it's hard to find, Saraga might have it. For other things, you'll find the basics and staples but probably not the top-shelf ingredients or more obscure items from that cuisine. For example, they did have some frozen Chinese dumplings, but not as many varieties as Viet Hua. I will still choose One World and Viet Hua for my regular shopping, since I mostly cook Northeast Asian foods at home. However, Saraga is worth a visit if you live on the south side, need African/Middle Eastern staples, or just enjoy shopping at different international markets. I did check expiration dates (always an issue at international groceries!!) and they seem better than Viet Hua about removing expired items. read more

My typical diet consists mostly of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean food. Saraga International Market helps me find what I want. I buy mostly packaged or dry foods. The store has these in abundance. They also have a wide range of sauces, oils, and marinades. As they are an international grocery, they have everything from Asian to Middle Eastern to German to Hispanic foods. They also have fish, meat, and produce. I find their ramen, udon, somen, and soba noodle selection to be a wide variety of products and brands from all over Asia. They also have Japanese and some Korean gyoza, otherwise known as potstickers in English. The store carries some frozen Thai soups and Chinese and Japanese frozen entrees that are quite good. At my request, they started to carry bagged, ready-to-heat Indian entrees. These are not likely as good as a home-cooked meal in an Indian household but an Indian friend finds them quite good, as he doesn't cook, and I agree. If there are negative things to mention, it's mostly that the store inventory is inconsistent, especially with drinks like Japanese tea and coffee. Besides products being inconsistent, I'm not sure about their equipment in the freezer section. During one visit, they had no frozen food at all and all the freezers seemed to be in need of repair. WOW it's like a new store, they've completely gutted the fish Dept THE SMELL IS GONE! Thank the Stars! Whatever restaurant (tiny, maybe 2 tables) is in the place, had served somebody a HUGE Bowl of soup I'm going back for. It is smaller and may not have as much as the other location, but it still has plenty and you should be able to get most, if not all, of what you need. I also find them to be reasonably priced. Just a couple of warnings: The produce is not always very fresh, and it seems like the fish may not be either. And some of the frozen stuff is freezer burnt. Also, make sure to check the dates on dry products, you will find that some things have expired well past their date. But other than those problems you should be able to find a lot of basics/staples there (just check dates) and they also have a nice selection of snacks and beverages. They also have a selection of cookware, dinnerware and other products. The location is also very convenient for those of us on the South side. Just a quick edit to mention that they made their freezer section larger, a lot more items there now, including a decent ice cream selection. read more

This place is disgusting. The vegetables have been sitting there forever. Potatoes have spuds in them citrus with soft spots! Just nasty. The staff is nit helpful at all so this made the entire shopping experience pretty frustrating. I also saw a bottle of RAID near the vegetables on my way out. They just need to close down because the store is nasty and so are there attitudes. read more

I needed some items for some Japanese-style soup that I was making for dinner. I was surprised to find Saraga Supermarket on the Southside of Indy, which offered food items representing most Far East, South East, South Asian as well Middle Eastern and African cultures. The store is spacious compared to most of its Asian market competition and offered a good selection of dry goods, produce, fresh meat and seafood. I found the ingredients I needed without a problem. While it still pales in comparison to the Asian markets found in Northern Virginia where I live, Indianapolis doesn't have a large Asian community. That said, the under 15,000 Asians living in Indianapolis especially those living on the Southside are well served by Saraga Supermarket. read more

I'm not a grocery store snob: what matters to me more than anything is price, closely followed by quality and selection. SELECTION: Saraga has a wide range of specialty ingredients for a wide range of Asian cooking; you'll have lots of variety to choose from, and you'll definitely find things you can't find in Kroger. If you want to stock up on fish sauce, good soy sauce, cooking wine, spices, all sorts of noodles, etc., this is a good place. PRICE: The prices aren't great, especially for those items that can be found in the chain stores (like chicken bouillon, tahini, canned beans/chickpeas, etc.) For example, I paid about $8.50 for a big canister of Knorr chicken bouillon that I later saw in a Kroger for around $5. QUALITY: The produce section was pretty lackluster: not cheap, and not the freshest. I didn't check out the meat or fish sections. ATMOSPHERE: The aisles are so narrow that two carts can't pass each other in one, so be prepared to do some backing up or get into a stand-off :-P Disclaimer: I lived in Los Angeles for seven years, where the selection of ethnic grocery stores is top notch, wide-ranging (separate huge markets for Mexican, Thai, Korean, Filipino, Armenian, Chinese, Japanese, etc.), and where produce and canned goods in ethnic stores tend to be significantly cheaper than in the major chains. Very disappointed. Employees are rude and they turn the lights off before the store was closed. I couldn't see much and didn't know where the things were. There's a big sign saying 99c for cantaloupes, but it turned out they are 99c/lb so you buy one cantaloupe weighing 3.1 lb, you end up paying for 4lb price. Very misleading sign! read more

I brought my 3 year old daughter in to use the restroom and get a drink perhaps and I was utterly disgusted. On the way to the bathroom there were just piles of junk on the floor everywhere. Also, the bathroom was disgusting There was a worker who came out right before us and I was just flabbergasted she walked out without a warning. I walked in and the seat was up. When I pulled it down, there was feces on it and splashes of gross fluid all over the toilet seat. I had to layer the seat with tons of toilet paper to protect my daughter's booty. The toilet paper was just sitting on top of the baby changing table, as well as whatever paper towels they had. When the toilet was flushed, it leaked out the back. There was a plant in the bathroom that was so dusty it was gray. Underneath, it looked like nobody had ever moved the plant stand to clean under it. There was a pile of gunk and dirt at its base. There was a container of soap on the pedestal sink that I had to touch unfortunately in order to get soap out of it. I told my daughter to touch nothing!!! We escaped the bathroom with just disgusting memories and I now feel like the rest of the store was most likely also just germ infested and probably would make us sick. I didn't dare touch anything else and I definitely didn't buy anything. I'm just disgusted writing this. Gross!!! Someone needs to learn how to clean....or everyone there. read more

Meh. I'm not crazy about this location, I live close so this is the one that gets most of my bidness. If you're in the market for fish, vegetables, and anything refrigerated it's a crap shoot, I've bought coconuts here several times and they've been hit and miss. Anything packaged, canned or drinks seem to be ok, going down the center aisles anything english/indian you're probably fine, some of the asian aisle seems to be outdated old product. As others have noted, yeah cleanliness and clientele leave a little to be desired, hey I love everyone but some are shadier than others. This place looks/smells not up to spec. My husband and I have shopped here for a long time for our international foods. My husband went to grab a bag from the checkout and dropped it. The glass jar inside the bag broke on the floor. The checkout person and the store manager refused to replace it. They do not understand customer service at all. We will not be going back. They lost a loyal customer. This is the amazing place! Most stunningly beautiful wife and her and I loved going here I'm sorry to say but this joint has a fantastic arrangement of beautiful ingredients and excellent brands! I have two disagree with some of the other reviews because, being from South Florida and knowing the kinds of stores we had which were fantastic. This place is just as great as the best if not better. It may be true for some people that they don't have every brand for that individual, but I have to say these brands are great try am out there fabulous we love international food markets and know a great one! I have to tell you this place is clean, excellent qualities and the prices are really below what I would've expected for a store with this many options! We will be back here a lot because when I need stuff that is super super good I will have now a place to find it and use it! By the way, the staff here though it is sparse, is friendly answers questions easily, and it gives you a great knowledge of what things are at the same time. Let me begin by saying I'm a generally positive person, because I know this review is going to make me seem like a grump. So, we are new to the area and have scoped out grocers all around Indy. This one was the most disappointing of them all so far. The produce is less than fresh. Wilted beans and greens all over. We bought a pre-cut dragon fruit (pricey stuff) only to find the underside was moldy. We headed straight back inside, but there are "no refunds on fresh goods." Also, the person I spoke to didn't appreciate the irony I pointed out about the dragon fruit not being fresh... While in on the subject of freshness.... check dates before you buy!! We bought 2 bags of frozen buns and both expired in 2014. Gross. Just. Gross. Aisles were blocked by stockers... In order to shop the aisles, I had to carry my baby and leave my cart behind, then drag a few items back and forth to the cart. I finally gave up. I had said excuse me, but the man pointed at the boxes he was emptying onto the shelf and shurugged. I imagine this meant not moving, I'm busy? The store had a pungent aroma. I'm not sure what it was. I do know my older kids were acting like fools holding their noses and saying rude things about how nothing from this store could possibly be edible. disappointing mothering moment. We will work on more open minds. Didn't help that I bought them $10 worth of moldy dragon fruit, though. All in all, I *really* wanted to like this store and end my search for a grocery with a good assortment of Asian foods. But I cannot. A friend of ours had mentioned Saraga but we never get to this part of town. But as it happened we drove by so I made us go in. So glad I did. They have a ton of different foods from different Asian nations. I happily picked up some Indian Chai as I just returned from Bombay on a business trip. I have been a customer occasionally, and shopped at this location in my neighborhood ever since it opened. I am extremely disappointed with the disorganization and cleanliness of this store, and the employees are not friendly and do not ask customers if they need help. On my visit there Monday 10/6 they had NO fresh mint. It is difficult to find what you want there and even other customers are unfriendly. read more

My experience here is limited to getting tahini for hummus and sticky rice. Found choices and that works for me. Overall the place seems like it could be a little cleaner and the people (shoppers) there always seem to be working over the fresh produce pretty hard trying to find good quality. It's so good to have an option to shop for asian/international groceries without driving the west side or the two options on the far north side. This place is not as big as their store on Lafayette road but it has a small fish market in the back that is kind of separate from the rest of the store and that helps with the smells too. They have a little less of everything but it does the job when you are looking for the staples. read more

Shop here for ingredients that I'm not able to find in regular grocery stores. Love the variety and the fact that there is so much to choose from. A huge assortment of teas and sweet snacks. This location simply doesn't compared to the variety of international foods at the Saraga International Market on 30th and Lafayette Road. The produce and meat selections are ok, but it felt a little depleted when I was last there. I hope that they get a larger location soon because this spot is pretty tightly packed, and it's tight for customers. Plus, a larger location will bring more variety to the Southside residents who can't go to Lafayette Road for some special ingredients. read more

We stopped at Saraga and did some browsing for our first visit. We'd been warned that this location doesn't quite match-up to the Lafayette Road location but we wanted to check it out anyway. I really don't know what to make of this store. A lot of interesting produce but so much of it seemed to be old, limp and way past it's prime. Also, a lot of the frozen items that are in see-through packaging seemed to look oddly freezer-burned. And, the fresh fish department tucked-in a back room of the store had some really sad-looking fish with murky glazed-over eyes and a definite non-fresh odor. But, on the other hand, there were some really good looking fresh meats that seemed reasonably priced. The fresh beef and chicken and some of the lamb looked great. They also carried goat meat which I found interesting. But, if you want to stick with packaged items like canned goods, sauces, etc there are a lot of really unique foodstuffs to check out. read more

My son and have been shopping here for quite some time. We have been very been quite pleased with most everything, and we really enjoyed getting the tiger shrimp. However, in the past 3-4 weeks, the quality of the shrimp has gone downhill in our honest opinion. We literally had to throw away 1 1/2 lbs of shrimp 2 weeks ago and again went there this evening and the shrimp was Headon Tiger Shrimp, but is NOT the same ---anywhere close---to the quality we were getting. Very dissapointed and feel it needs to be brought to their attention. read more
