Had such a positive experience. I'm a very avid shooter, but I'm not from the area and we went here for the ability to rent NFA options. I didn't have a small screwdriver to adjust sites on my 9mm pistol. I ask one of the employee (don't know if it was the owner) if could lend a small screwdriver. I was not expecting the tone on his voice saying "What is this a hardware store" He did lend me the screwdriver. Guns in the South are like the 4th of July and fireworks.............they just go together. Now mind you I'm a liberal & not a member of the NRA, but do adore our Admendments (this would apply to #2). This location has been around for some time and the folks here are helpful ( I called in advance looking for a TSA approved case to transport an item and they put a few to the side for me to look at when I came in later that day). They also took some old ammo I had in my 38 that was VERY old as I didn't know or want to randomly dispose of it in the regular trash. Finally, they have guns to try out in their on site range as well as use your own. I checked their pricing on some Glocks and they were in line to other pricing I've seen in the area. So you may never want to "get your gun off" so-to-speak in AVL, but if you do, this is the place I'd recommend. GBA....................... read more

I have never done business with On Target. I live in Hendersonville and hate driving toward Asheville for almost anything. Today the folks at On Target ensured they won't get my money. Ever. They show as a Kimber dealer. I am admittedly late to the purchase game since COVID hit. I called today to inquire about the odds of getting my hands on a CDP Pro 9mm. The first call was answered by someone picking up then apparently laying the phone on the counter to take care of customers at the counter. At one point I heard someone ask if someone was holding. After 2 minutes of waiting, I gave up and hung up. I called back, and my call was answered. I asked for confirmation that they were a Kimber dealer. The response was, "If I can get anything from them." I tried to tell the gentleman what I was looking for. He cut me off and told me he "had nothing." No interest in talking to someone looking to spend $1300. Regardless of current market conditions, one would think a businessman would want to talk to someone inquiring about a high-dollar brand. Nope! Let's just be rude and whiny instead! I will give my money to someone out of state and pay a local dealer a transfer fee before I give On Target my money. I will PAY MORE with an out-of-state dealer before I give ONE RED CENT to On Target. Good job folks and goodbye. You won't even get my transfer fee!!! Update: I got a call back. Not asking for my business. Didn't even mention taking this review down. But human to human offered an apology. Thanked me for the kick in the ass. Took my name and number. Great conversation. Excellent shop and range. I've been a member at OnTarget for over two decades. In the 90's Jeff helped me with my first .45 purchase, a 1911. I purchased the first of many N-Frames and my first Glock from Jeff and Pebbles. Recently, my first Garand. When I started reloading, I was able to find all the equipment and supplies I needed from Jeff. He even took the time to coach me enough to get me started safely. CCW? - Again, done at On Target. Excellent, informative class. Jeff made it as fun and interesting as it could have possibly been. I've enjoyed watching the boys grow up and learn the family business and the family values. This is a business that has been successful because of the personalities of the family that owns it and the folks they choose to employ. I am intent on learning to shoot to protect myself and family from the rabid Trump supporters wreaking havoc across the country. When I called to ask about their safety measures, the guy told me that the customers are permitted to wear masks but that the staff prefers not to because it will be too hard for the customers to hear their directions. When I reminded him it is a safety mandate he said I was welcome to wait till a later date to come in, when masks were not necessary. No thanks. I will teach myself, safely. Another business who chooses to alienate and endanger customers to make a point about their political beliefs, apparently. read more

On my recent trip to NC, we decided to stop by the shooting range. Maybe we should have done more research instead of haphazardly just stopping by any that were opened. The store was VERY HARD to find. Google was very confused as to where we were on the map and also there was no sign outside (maybe it was tucked away) but we drove in 3 circles before we found it. This was strictly by chance as we noticed a guy outside in the parking lot with noise cancelling ear muffs on. There was also no sign on the front door. It was also a bit chaotic inside when we showed up. One side was for shooting and the other side was to purchase the weapons they had. When we were finally served, the young man was very nice and helped get us setup and took us through the basics. Their ear muffs were not very good at buffering the sounds out. I started getting a little bit of anxiety from all the loud noises, I've gone to a few ranges now and this is the first time this has happened to me. This is also a pretty short range, so maybe that added to the noise level. Overall, we got some shots in but probably my least enjoyable experience. read more

As far as I'm concerned On Target is an excellent pistol store and indoor range for pistols. Shoulder weapons are a somewhat different story. The family staff are super friendly & knowledgeable with zero redneck attitude or gun-jock condescension. Array of rentals is impressive, lanes are cheap, ammo prices are typical. I bought a pistol there, so my membership gets me some range discounts - although I'm unclear what they are exactly. As a pistol shop, I like them. They were super helpful & patient while I deliberated & asked questions. They gave me a decent deal on a new Walther. They also went the extra mile to track down retention holster & mags I needed. As a rifle store, they're not ideal. I may have caught them on a bad day, but when I was shopping for a rifle, I gave the owner my criteria and price range (which was fairly high) and he had no suggestions and seemingly no preference whether I bought from them or not. Plus their in-store selection is limited. So I ended up buying online, which I do not like to do. Oh well, if I had to spend all day talking to "tactical" douchebags I'd probably get tired too. I've not used their gunsmith services yet, so we'll see. I'm giving On Target 5 stars, even though they're not perfect cuz at the end of the day, I just like & trust them, which goes a long way. read more

I'll second what a previous reviewer has said - to pardon the pun, this place is hit and miss. I stayed away from this place for about a year due to its increasing popularity with people that had little to no regard for proper firearm safety and the apparent lack of supervision by the staff (not entirely their fault, there were many days where it felt like they were short staffed for the number of shooters there). Some examples: 1) a middle age woman who was trying to rack the slide of her semi-automatic handgun and had the muzzle pointed at the lane next to her (keep in mind that there is just a plastic stall between the lanes); and 2) turning around one day to find someone pointing a gun in my general direction when I had turned around to grab a target from my shooting bag (he assured me over and over that it was unloaded, but you should always treat a gun like it is loaded). With that in mind, I returned to this range about a month ago because it was far too cold outside to shoot at one of the outdoor public ranges and found that some major improvements have been made. First, they have greatly expanded the store area - you can actually move around in there without feeling like you are in a phone booth. Secondly, and most importantly, with this expansion they have added a viewing window for the range from the retail counter and stepped up on staff monitoring the behavior of those in the range while they are busy. Good stuff, all the way around. I wouldn't call this place any more than a pistol range, but I believe they will let you shoot some rifles in here (although the stalls are not exactly the best for a bench rest and last I knew there was a limit to the caliber of rifle that you can bring in here - call before you bring). They will rent you a pistol if you don't have one and the staff that I have observed are very helpful and knowledgeable to those that take the time to ask. As for the store, I don't think this is a place that I would purchase my next firearm. Their prices are significantly higher than some of the other places I have purchased from - although, I admit, I have not purchased a gun during these high demand times either. A good example when I was there a month ago, a small Ruger revolver that I paid $400 about a year and a half ago is over $500 here. Possibly high demand? All in all, if you just want a good place in Asheville to do some pistol shooting, I would now be completely comfortable to recommend this place. read more

Wow! My partner and I had a great time yesterday! Harry was extremely helpful and efficient getting us set up and ready to go. We came with a group of mostly first timers and didn't feel like a bother the whole time! Everyone was so kind! I was a little hesitant going in to the event as I identify as queer and have rather short hair for a womyn...in my experience...most times I am in a venue with guns enthusiasts I usually stick out like a sore thumb and don't get treated very nicely....instead we were treated so politely and didn't get not one dirty look the whole time! Overall I loved the experience and will do it again! If anyone reading this review is hesitant to go bc of a stereotype in their mind about the people that may run it.....I would say...leave it at the door! These ppl r kind! Just got home from my 3rd visit to OT and have enjoyed two of those visits very much. My advice is to make sure the time they write in the log (start time) IS the time that you are starting and not a half hour earlier. I hadn't even left my house by the time the person who helped us today logged my friend and I in. Probably an honest mistake on his part and all I'm saying is check the time you start with the time you are logged in the book. read more
