I don't understand the complaints of this location. Every time I've gone in the staff have been more than kind. They signed me up for the new mom deals and I have loved shopping their clothes. Wow this store is amazing! Y.husband and I, and then our friend,.walked in and literally stood and said "Woah." This place is so well-organized, stocked to the brim (but with still enough space to get around) with excellent condition children's clothes. And the prices are so excellent, $3.50-$4.50 for sleep and plays, $3-$5 for food and pants, pretty much most stuff under $5. What I love is that it's organized by size, then type of item, and then by color. It makes it so easy to build a coordinated capsule wardrobe where everything (or most things) match in one visit, which was extremely useful when dressing for the upcoming fall. Somehow these people keep what literally must be hundreds of thousands of items organized on the racks, as well as toys and other baby supplies. Even the newborn stuff had plenty to choose from. They also periodically run deals like 5 sleep and okays for $10, or bodysuit grab bag for $10, which is killer when you have a spotty baby. Cannot say enough good things about this place and it's selection! read more

Despite the Cary location being closer to me, I drove further to come to the Durham Once Upon a Child location. I came here mainly to sell. You see, Cary had passed up on TONS of my stuff. I mean, like 11 diaper boxes worth of clothing and shoes. I KNEW I had great stuff in there too so I decided to bring it to Durham to see if they'd buy any more.... SO GLAD I CAME!!! This store bought an additional $143 worth of stuff from me- stuff that was passed up at the previous location. I still left with a number of boxes (which I then dropped off at a thrift store) but I was happy that I didn't just donate everything after trying to sell at Cary. The staff were great! From bringing me the key to the restroom (and taking it back instead of me having to go to the front), to checking me out, to HELPING ME CARRY MY BOXES OUT TO THE CAR, to bringing me an extra bag when my one daughter was crying that she didn't get to carry a bag, to helping me find my cell phone when I misplaced it. Everyone was great! This location is a tad on the smaller side and I didn't find as much as I usually do when I go to a OUAC (Once Upon A Child). Prices seem reasonable in general. Every now and then I pull a piece that is outrageously priced. Love when there are clearance sales. We'll be back! read more

After hearing about Once Upon A Child from a couple mom friends, I was excited to find some great deals on cute infant clothing. I bought a couple things, but left with mixed thoughts about the store. As far as the store's selections, there are not many second hand toys, but there is a good amount of clothing for little boys and girls. I found that the section for baby girls was a bit limited, with way too much pink and purple. I'm not a pink and purple kind of girl, but naturally the store's selection largely depends on what people donate/sell. Two onesies I got were only $2.50 each, and one another similar was $8.00 which I found to be an odd difference. Once Upon A Child is useful in that they will buy lightly used clothing or toys. Unless you have buckets and buckets of clothing, however, you shouldn't expect much money. I brought in a dozen outfits, hoping to make maybe $12 or so. OUAC told me it would be an hour before they could price the items, so I went to hang out at Target. However, after I came back they still weren't priced. A couple hours later, I drove the 20 mins back to the store, only to get 6 rejected outfits and $6.05 - probably about the amount I spent on gas driving back and forth 4 times. Like another Yelper before me, I also noticed that the staff members were a bit cold and unprofessional. None of the three women behind the counter bothered to greet me when I walked in. One woman rang up my items while chewing ice cubes, one of which fell out of her mouth. I will probably go back, but if the staff were more professional, I would likely shop there more often. read more

This store is a life saver on my wallet. I look for everyday cotton playwear and browse through their dresses. I have always had good success finding what I need. This shop seems to have inconsistent standards. I've purchased clothing from there and later found stains and holes once I was actually dressing my child. When I brought items to sell, they seemed to require items be fresh out of the box. As a working parent, time is a commodity. Don't waste yours here. read more

I loved this location when it first opened. Not sure if management changed or they just hiring whoever puts in a application without interviewing the employees. BUT I am officially done. I walked in and there was maybe 6 employees behind the counter and they all just stared me instead of greeting me. I walked to the counter and let one girl know I was trying to exchange some shoes. She said ok. When I got back to the counter with the shoes I wanted to exchange another girl told me I couldn't exchange the shoes because they were from another location. I love this shop! Once upon a child is a perfect place to find great baby clothes. They have name brand items that are very inexpensive. Who cares if they're consignment. Everything I've come across has been in excellent condition, so why pay more when my child will grow out of these things so quickly anyway? Very friendly staff and awesome sales as well! read more

Good for buying if you carefully inspect what you are purchasing. I've purchased clothes with holes here twice when I was not careful to look closely at each seam and hem. Last time I bought a $10 Northface jacket that my son picked out, which had holes in the sleeve. I would say this is not a worthwhile place to consign. The consignment process is aggravating and you won't make much money. The staff will treat you like a middle schooler who doesn't follow the rules. They wouldn't let me share a consigment account with my husband, so we have to have two different accounts for our family. They make you sign a form saying the clothes is yours and you own what you are selling. They won't tell you on the phone how much they are offering for the clothes you bring in. I brought in two children's coats, two pairs of never worn sneakers, and a entire season's worth of clean older boys clothes which was in good condition. They specifically listed older boys clothes as a "want" at the consignment desk. They took everything and gave me $25. Wish I'd had the energy to sell it myself on FB Marketplace. Could probably have made more and been less annoyed in the process. read more

I was so excited that Durham was getting a Once Upon a Child. I've been trekking to Cary for the past several years to get deals on kids clothes. I've been to this new location four times, and every time I am disappointed. The staff is really unprofessional. They are loud and obnoxious. When I was in the store last week the owner and the manager were having a personal and inappropriate conversation while also ringing up my purchases. It made me feel very awkward and unwelcome in the store. I've also found that compared to the Cary location, this store is overpriced. When I go to Cary, I rarely pay more than $2.50 for a single item. But while looking for clothes for my infant daughter, most items were $6.00 or more. I think if the staff were more professional I could overlook some of the higher prices. But the staff's unprofessional behavior leaves me feeling frustrated and undervalued as a customer. I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

Where do I even begin? I was excited at the possibility of selling some high quality baby items...but after my third visit (at different times in the year) I have come to realize that I will not make any money selling to this store. I have heard people say better things about the Cary location...but so far I have had three poor experiences. The last few times I have brought very expensive designer baby clothes that my son could not wear. They were in perfect condition. They were in season. Not Carters - I mean like boutique baby clothes. What did they offer me? $4. I also brought in a $120 baby item that was in mint condition and they passed on it with no explanation. They didn't have any in the store either- so it did not make any sense. I understand the need to be picky about what they take in- because the store is CLOGGED with clothes... but at least pick out good clothes. While browsing while I waited (by the way... seemed like only one employee could "sort" the clothes, other employee was texting on her phone, other was just standing there) I saw aisles of clothes that looked really basic and it just smelled similar to a goodwill. I am all about some thrifting but this isn't a thrift store. The girl who helped me recently was very friendly but the manager (I assume she is the manager) just looked like she hated her job. I understand it's not a fun job but at least put on a smile so people will feel comfortable shopping in your store. Save your expensive items and sell on Craigslist. read more

Nice items but horrible customer service! If YOU DISLIKE YOUR JOB.....QUIT!! But how can you not enjoy working in an store that's giving back to the community. The store inside from glance has pretty nice stuff. I was considering buying a few items and wanted to ask them about donating some of my children's old clothes but the wat the staff was acting as if I was bothering them by asking two simple questions I didnt buy anything and decided to continue shopping and donating at Good Will. What pissed me off more was i was standing at the counter i just got an awkward look...she didn't ask "May I help you?" Or anything...just called someone over that also had an attitude and half answered my question. I probably will come back because I did see things I liked. But your staff needs training!! I like this place I'm not in love but I like it. Here you'll find a large variety of clothing all the way from infants all the way up to about preteens I think they go up to size 18. I feel like everything here is definitely a reasonable price I don't think anything is over pricey. The staff is very friendly they even have something like a loyalty program to wear if you spend a certain amount you get a percentage off, which I think is really cool. I believe they even have to where you can sell items that you no longer need or donate them here as well I don't know if they'll give you something for a tax write off if you donate. I think it's pretty neat spot if you have small small kiddos. read more

The staff are friendly and have always greeted me when I walked in. The store is clean and the items are clean looking. I liked buying from them but selling to them, they always offered too low. I did find some good deals there though. Once I was trying to find footed pj's and they didn't have any more. One employee went to the stockroom and came back with 4-5 big bins filled with them. He helped me look for the sizes I needed and when I was done he put the rest on the shelf. But the best part is I once lost $10 inside the store. I went up to the register and asked if someone turned any cash in. The girl said oh no you lost your money. She and another employee helped me search the whole store and the employee found it for me! I love the selection of clothing for my son but when I walk in I shouldn't look to my left and not only NOT be acknowledged when walking into the store, but see the employee nearest the entrance on her phone and completely ignoring paying customers. I walked past two more employees and still got no type of greeting. I was one of maybe two customers that were in the store at the time. Good customer service isn't hard to exhibit. read more

The sales women refused to even look through my items because they were "backed up" TWO HOURS before they closed for the day. I offered to drop off my items (only about 10 things) and pick them up another time and they refused. Being that they cater to moms, you'd think they'd understand that moms have a lot better things to do than go an hour out of their way just to be turned away. I had a great experience at Once Upon a Child in Durham! I was especially impressed with the fact that both of the employees who were working when I was there spoke spanish. I am always going to be inclined to support businesses in our community who accommodate spanish speaking customers. I both sold and bought while I was there. I felt fine about what I made selling my babies old clothes because I was able to buy some new ones for so little. To sell there stuff for so cheap you have to know you won't get a ton for what you sell to the store, and I'm fine with that! I would (and have) recommended this store to friends. read more

I've been shopping this location since they opened, but today was my last visit. Although I have two other locations closer to me, I came to this store most frequently. I walked into the store and sat my buy on the counter, and was ignored by the two employees working on buys, and the other two employees working further down. I had to interrupt a conversation to be acknowledged, and was told that my buy would take 90 min. I come back an hr & 45 min later and my buy wasn't done, and would take another 30 min. I decided to take my items back, as I had to leave and the employees seemed to find it amusing. Gorgeous and spacious new location, but horrible customer service. read more

If I could rate this store zero stars I would. My first and last time in this store! 1. I came into the store not one employee acknowledged that a customer has even walked in the door. 2. After 10 minutes of being in the store finally an employee spoke to me but only cause I was looking at an item she was putting out. That's very very poor customer service! 3. My daughter picked up a book it was cute but all wore out torn and not in good condition at all.I was gonna purchase it till I looked at the price. It was $4! No way I can go to the thrift store and find way better books for less than that. Those vhs tapes as well not even pawn shops sell them for more than $1 4. Now onto the clothes what the crap are you thinking when you put those prices on them?! Your a second hand store why are you selling stuff for so much money? WAY overpriced for an consignment shop! Good, easy to shop selection. If you're willing to hunt, I routinely find great prices on nice everyday basics (Hanna Anderson jammies, good quality smocks, Vineyard Vines all for a few dollars.) I love how they group some things by theme (Carolina/Duke, Christmas jammies, smocked pieces, etc.) so it's easier to find exactly what I'm looking for, especially coordinating sibling items. Love the new larger location and their use of FB to show off good finds. Staff is very friendly and polite, although some of the younger girls seem a little less invested and are slower to offer assistance. No real complaints, though. I rarely sell consignment, but did here once and was pleased with what I was offered for just a cursory sweep of my son's closet. I've seen some very negative reviews on FB (which prompted me to write this review), and I have to say that, based on what I saw/read, many of the complainers had an awfully high opinion of the relatively mediocre clothes they were trying to sell and maybe had a case of sour grapes that more weren't purchased. My recent (and only) experience was absolutely appalling. It all revolves around customer service. They are in business to serve customers, right? I'm not upset about what they did/did not accept to sell--my issue is beyond that. From the moment I walked in the door, to the moment I walked out the door I was overwhelmed with a sense of negativity, resentment, frustration and complete unprofessionalism from the staff. As I walked through the door there was some tension and dispute/bickering out loud amongst the employees and he who looked to be management (in the middle of the store)--One of the girls chimed into the conversation saying, in a negative tone, that though "the customers" talked to them in a round about way, the manager should speak his mind clearly and directly. Everyone behind the counter seemed like they hated being there, doing what they were doing. They also acted and talked amongst each other as if I weren't even there. I could see that, Yes, they have A. LOT. of stuff to weed through. And I am certain customers are not always as kind and optimistic as others, but their #1 priority above all should be customer service. Being kind, informative, patient and understanding with customers...and smiling is a VERY easy way to show kindness. Leave the unprofessional talk in the back room or in a meeting space with the manager, not in front of customers. All this to say, I hope others have had a better experience than I had, and that Once Upon a Child of Durham will indeed find some customers that will be returning customers--I will not be one of them. read more

I just found out that this store had opened recently, and I was looking for a well-organized, well-stocked consignment shop where I could buy gently used toddlers clothes. The clothing in the store is very well organized, by gender, size, and color family for the most part. The shoes however, are all thrown in bins, and I didn't feel like my 1 yr old would put up with me sorting through them (they do have a tiny play area that I could've put him in, but he was really cranky that day). The clothes I looked through were all in very good or better condition. The staff seemed a bit off, I had to stand at the front for almost a full minute before I was acknowledged by one of the seven or so staff members standing right in front of me (honestly, it felt more awkward than rude, but still...). They were very polite once they decided to help me, though. I will definitely be back. It seems like they are growing their stock up (they have only been open a few weeks or so), and I look forward to finding more treasures for my son. I'm not sure if I will consign here, though, as the percentage seems a bit low to me (but not completely out of the ball park). The shop is a bit hard to find, but if you put the address into google maps and set it for satellite it is easier to find. i had an unfortunate "selling" experience today. i will not do business again at this location and If other people have similar experiences, i cannot imagine this location will stay in business for an extended period of time. i have been here on a number of occasions and never felt that customer service was a priority at all. However, today's visit seals the deal.
