I LOVE Rumors!! I make the drive from GSO to Chapel Hill to shop new items and honestly, this is the only place where I sell/donate my clothes that I no longer need in my closet. Any items that you bring and they accept will give you 35% CASH BACK, while STORE CREDIT is 65% (personally I use store credit). There's always something good I find here and never leave the store empty. Price point for their items are reasonable unless you find more of the higher end brands at a higher price. Recently, I found 2 Urban Outfitter items and A New Day (Target) trench coat jacket for $8! Overall, Rumors is an awesome spot to buy thrifted items. This place has so many options for good gifts! I got my friend a Game of Thrones magnetic gift! I also received a gift from here of fun little earrings. They also accept clothing for consignment on a daily basis so the selection of clothing comes in on a regular basis. I like how it is very affordable and provide options for men and women! I have a love/hate relationship with Rumors. On one hand, they do have nice stuff, plus the store is clean and they have good Covid protocols. However, recently I've been getting more and more tired of their options and how they brand themselves as a store. Meant to be a hip, trendy store, the clothes run just about as expensive as a normal store, and the racks are filled with resold fast fashion items. Not to mention they DEF get their rings and jewelry either off AliExpress or Amazon or one of those companies. They claim to be size inclusive- I guess that must only be for women's clothing, and even that is slim. No plus sized men's clothing at ALL! I go into their CH location and have maybe 2 racks I can choose from, most of which are not brands that are size inclusive, but again more fast fashion that isn't made for bigger bodies. Not to mention the clothes are all tiny! I'm a fan of crop tops but it'd be nice to have more modest options than cutouts and bodycon dresses. The staff is nonchalant to the point of not caring, they make no effort to help find things, and I just overall feel kind of like a nuisance rather than a welcomed customer in the store. I just wish Rumors would back up what they claim to be. Overall, Rumors is great if you've got money to spend, you're on the slimmer side, and you're young and trendy. Everyone else, you're better off going to one of the real thrift stores around that actually have all sizes at cheap prices. read more

Came here to sell some clothes a few weeks ago - I'll be the first to say that my style isn't exactly "hip" or what the stores vibe is, but I could hear the two employees that were assessing my clothes laughing at them. i like selling here because they offer 55% in store credit. their curated style is very unique. 4 stars cause i was sold a final sale item with dry rot and it ripped as soon as i got home. i wish they did some more quality checks on their pricey items. it was a $36 used dress, maybe i should have tugged on the fabric a bit in store. it ripped like it were paper. read more

Looks like a bunch of hippy dippy crap, it looked like it was retail prices almost (shirt for $8). Half of the women's shirts were crop tops which is just not my thing, some jackets where decent but again the price was meh. This is more like a punk/hippy boutique than a thrift store. This place was recommended on RDU Hidden Gems, so I decided to drive 30 min to take my daughter, as she's a thrift store junkie. They were very strict with their Covid protocols and we had to wait outside about 20 minutes or so before it was our turn to enter the shop. That was no big deal, I love cautious measures which added to their overall score from me. Once we were able to go in, I was extremely underwhelmed with their selection, nothing was memorable, except perhaps the blue robe in the men's section, because I am a fan of all things robes. However, I thought all of the items were extremely overpriced, like honestly, you could buy those items brand new for less any day of the week. A lot of the items looked very old and not in any way fashionable. My daughter was highly underwhelmed as well. The staff were all extremely unfriendly to the point where they didn't even bother to make eye contact, greet you, or any of the sort. The only associate that was personable, was the young lady Latino with long hair that was outside while the customers waited. I can't say that I would recommend this place, and three stars was being generous. read more

I ran into a couple girls from Rumors at the Durham Patchwork Market at Fullsteam one Saturday afternoon, and ever since that experience it's been on my list of places to go. I finally got the chance to pay them a visit and was NOT disappointed. First off, the shop is really large for an upscale thrift boutique. I was pleasantly surprised at how well things were organized and the prices seemed very reasonable. They have clean dressing rooms, and all sorts of things from fashionable accessories [belts, jewelry, hats, scarves, etc.], shoes, and woman AND men's clothing. Not only do they sell some great pieces, but they also purchase clothes whenever they're open! You can't help but feel like you're supporting locals when shopping at Rumors and you're sure to find some great additions to your wardrobe! If you haven't paid Rumors a visit yet, I hope they get to the top of your list FAST! read more

Went here yesterday and I'm in LOVE. Truly an authentic thrift shop. All of their items are reasonably priced and not outrageous, like some shops. I was able to buy 7 items for $64, which is a steal. They have almost anything you could want: hats, clothing, shoes, jewelry, bags, etc. i wish the shop was a little bigger, but I mean that's what makes it cute and unique. read more

We had a great experience at Rumors! It was our first visit. I was impressed with the inventory (hip, creatively displayed, unique). All of the staff were extremely friendly! Sometimes you walk into a store and browse, and no one speaks to you, and you feel lost. That will NOT happen here! Everything is very inexpensive, fashionable, and you will find exactly something you need like sailor pants, or something you do not need like sailor pants. I heard most of their stuff comes from the very rad Richmond VA, but was that just a...rumor? Great news for folks with feet like mine! Many a size 8 1/2 and 9 to choose from, unlike a lot of other vintage/thrift places. Also a large assortment of accessories, ranging from necklaces to sunglasses, and socks. Boys n Gals n Inbetween will find EVERYTHING they need here to strut out on the town for under $20. read more

My teenage daughter swears by this place so after we had lunch we went over so I could check it out. It's definitely the coolest looking thrift store I've been in and very organized. Lots of staff on the floor putting things up and keeping it looking cool. I'm sure with any thrift turnover of merchandise means some hits and misses. My daughter has found a dress for a dance here, skirts and a few tops at very reasonable prices. I found an old Boy Scout shirt I'm going to sew some vintage 70s patches on for a fun shirt to wear. I also found a new with tags dress as well. The clothes are definitely more geared to hip, younger gens. You won't find Alfred Dunner or Sag Harbor here for instance. I like that they have some psychedelic looking stuff here. Don't know if raves are a thing anymore but they had some perfect pieces. I absolutely love the music they play. I need to ask what pandora station the use as I had my daughter Shazam quite a few songs. The place does still retain a bit of that thrift shop smell which I noticed more once I got my items home. I did find the floor staff standoffish and was not welcomed or asked if I needed any help. They were bustling around and I had to jump out of their way a few times but the person at check out was as friendly as she was beautiful. If you ask me, what is missing is a ICEE MACHINE. I like self serve with free refills if they could swing that. They could put one in with the arcade next door I suppose. read more

Cool location and shop is really cute but the close were just so so, more old and worn than old and hip. Love the vibe when I walked in, but found very little more than some sunglasses and one top that were cool. There is a lot of just really used stuff (faded, low-quality) and then a few great things sprinkled in. Need a better screening process IMO. read more

Great curated thrift shop. Since it's curated it's a little bit more than the prices you'd find at Goodwill but you don't have to waste like an hour trying to find stylish options. I bought some polarized sunglasses for $8 and they've held up well. They are very involved in the community because they are always hosting days where a portion of the proceeds go to local non-profits (like TABLE). However, I have been caught going in at like 6:45 when they close at 7 so I just wish they would stay open a little bit later because 7 just feels really early and parking is a bit easier after 5. read more

rumors has always been great to me and my friends. the staff are understanding, quick to respond irl and online, and very welcoming. people complain about their prices but i don't really know what there is to complain about. everything is priced below retail value, usually FAR below. shirts for $8-20 dollars and pants/shorts are often in the same range. it's amazing considering companies are charging $40-$80 dollars for single items that aren't produced ethically anyways. and the items you guys sell are always fashionable and there's something for everyone in CH. it's always a fun outing when going to rumors and i'm pleased they've stayed open and safe during covid. maintaining the mask mandate is absolutely not a bother to us chapel hillians. thank you rumors CH for everything you've done for our community ! read more

I love Rumors! I am a UNC Chapel Hill student involved in greek life, and Rumors always comes in clutch when I need random clothes for cocktails or themed events. I recently found a Dooney and Bourke purse in their bag section for about 20 dollar in such good condition! Great find, but there was a sneaky part of a goodwill sticker stating a slightly lower price still left on the outside. They have great clothes and great accessories, and despite the sticker I bought the purse anyways so, would recommend! read more

They took 5 items (including a only-worn-once Banana Republic dress) and gave me $19.50. They give you an option of getting credit, but I didn't see anything I liked. read more

The Durham store. It's notably less organized and easy to understand from a male customer's perspective. I've been a loyal customer for 5+ years and I honestly love the products and I appreciate and support the small business aspect of it. Every time I go in the variety of selection for males seems to have blended into the women's or unisex selections. It's super aggravating how intensively I have to dig to find distinctly male articles of clothing. It's gotten worse as I've mentioned over the years. Also the lack of willingness to hold clothes for legitimately loyal customers is frustrating. The point of the business is to sell clothes, yet you're so unwilling to hold stuff for one night. Just irritating. Rumors has great potential, I feel the chapel hill store has achieved that and been managed well. I can tell the Durham store is not managed by the same person. There is not a brand consistency between the two stores. The Durham store looks like it's renting the space and sparsely decorating and filling the space--as if they're going to move out tomorrow. I'd genuinely love to see the Durham store brought up to the standard of the chapel hill location in store organization, store presentation, and clear distinction between male, female, and unisex clothing. Also the organization by color, while it's beautiful and seemingly helpful, is a serious setback to someone who's not leisurely shopping and knows the size their searching for and the styles and colors they like. Great items, love the shop, but the customer service... needs some work. Workers are not personable at all. Everyone looks disgruntled and they just make jokes with each other while completely disregarding customers. I thought it was a one time thing but this has been the case on the multiple occasions I have shopped here. A simple "Hey, how are you doing today?" really goes a long way people. read more

If you're looking to sell clothes here for cash and not store credit, be prepared to wait in line before the store even opens, like it's a midnight showing or a sold-out concert. And even then, it's entirely possible you'll end up waiting over an hour for your items to be looked at (despite being told 20-30 minutes, tops), only to be told they already ran out of cash for the day. Rumors is the only thrift store I've ever been to that has a "cash budget" for the day. I suspect it's not a problem for most folks who are happy to accept credit, but I personally am not a fan of $30 secondhand shorts, ironic, tacky Hawaiian prints, or Tim McGraw t-shirts. There are some nice pieces here and there, but after trying to unsuccessfully sell clothes here at least five times now, I won't be returning for any reason in the future. read more
