This Dale Jones Burch Neighborhood Center program was opened in 2019 on the former site of a defunct firehouse and adjacent to Henry Street's headquarters. The staff is very welcoming and attentive. I came here for a workplace training session. After reading their pamphlets and literature about their services I am elated with their offerings available. I am finally included to be on the other side... at long last. Nota bene: All services are free.

They do not stand by advertised requirements and will arbitrarily dismiss volunteers when they have exceeded their quota but only after volunteers (and families) have committed time and good faith to the event. There is a serious lack of transparency with capturing hours and someone really needs to conduct a thorough audit of their system. Save yourselves the grief and trouble and volunteer with another organization that is worthier and willing to treat volunteers with respect and not like disposable garbage.

The upper eastside facility has a fitness center, swimming pool and a variety of classes (salsa dancing, guitar lessons, tech instruction.) Some classes reflect the large community of Asian seniors including English communication skills for Mandarin speakers. But there's also advanced beginner German! Unlike Saint Peters, this center operates seven days a week. They also offer three meals a day for a voluntary contribution of $1 for breakfast, and $1.50 for lunch and dinner. The fitness center borders on adequate -- a small room with some malfunctioning equipment, and not much of it. (I look at this as an alternative to Planet Fitness whose NYC locations pale in comparison to my Planet Fitness in Ardmore, PA -- but maybe not.) When you enroll, you can participate in programs at all Lenox Hill locations. (Besides St. Peters Church, I believe there's a center in the Village.) I'm a newbie to all this -- new-ish to town, but well over sixty! -- and from what I can tell, the staff and folks who participate are friendly and come from all walks of life.

As soon I entered the lobby, the female security guard greeted me. I asked if there's a fitness room at this rec center. She said there is and politely gave me clear directions to that room. There was a personal trainer in the lobby. As soon as he heard that I was new to the center, he introduced himself and mentioned that he offers free 30 minute sessions. How cool! And very good to know. ATMOSPHERE They offer many things here: fitness room with treadmills, biked, and some strength machines. There's a conference room, where I saw a class or workshop taking place . There's a computer room with 5 to 10 machines. There's also an outdoor pool, which is open the summer. The rooms looked clean. Bathroom looked decent enough.

The Nippon Club is located on West 57th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. The receptionist sent me up to the seventh floor in a high tech elevator where no buttons are pressed. Two exhibits were going on side by side. I found the cloisonné vases and boxes beautiful. A tapestry of two leopards was my favorite and listed for $20,000. Everything was for sale and if I had oodles of money I would have picked up one or two piece. Several of the objects were from the Meiji period (1872-1912) and Shöwa period (1926-1989). A large bowl and a box of an exquisite blue was breathtaking. Going back to street level one presses the X button in the elevator. Thank you to the Nippon Club for the invitation to visit this exhibit. I added my name for future events.

There are free guided tours of the various Masonic rooms (each with different styles), and the guides answer any questions you may have about the building or the fraternity during the tour. They have multiple lodge rooms and each room is designed and built under a different school of architecture. There's a really cool library located on the 14th floor that is open to the public and hold a lot of interesting Masonic artifacts. Many of the hallways are decorated with pictures of famous Freemasons including many of our presidents, and interesting people like Harry Houdini. Finally the 6th floor has a huge amazing Gold George Washington (Brother Freemason). Highly recommended!
