Like most of SLO, everyone is incredibly friendly - from the staff to the coaches that will go out of their way to introduce themselves and always say hi when they see you in the gym. They have developed a community that only comes from continued and deliberate effort. They regularly host events to keep growing this community and you can see its size and strength at the 9am Saturday classes. This gym nailed the warehouse aesthetic while also keeping weight-lifters in mind. I have never had an issue finding a squat rack, which I can't say about any other gym I have been to. The free weights/dumbbells go in to the high 100s, where most gyms cap at 95/100lbs. In the warmer weather the outdoor turf-lined area is one of my favorite perks that I've also never had in other gyms. This place is a gym that's designed by people who actually use the gym and make it a point to continue making improvements for its members. If you need a gym that's more than just a place to work out, check out Headstrong.

Nice and spacious, and there was no macho vibe. It was welcoming and comfortable. Until about a week ago. Apparently, the Fitness 19 nearby just closed, and Kennedy was bought out by Curl(?). The owner(s) of Curl, in their infinite wisdom, gave everyone at Fitness 19 some kind of transfer deal to Kennedy. Now, Kennedy is packed wall-to-wall (and with tons of gym rat chads). People are leaving weights and attachments all over, not racking things where they belong, slamming weights, grunting, being loud and just generally obnoxious ("HEY BRO! OH HEY BRO! DID YOU TALK TO CINDY?! YEA BRO SHE'S IN TOWN THIS WEEK. CHILL YEA I'M GONNA DO LIKE 400 MORE SETS BRO I FEEL THE PUMP. OK BRO"). It's a freaking joke now. This went from a nearly perfect club to an overcrowded clown show overnight. What's worse is the new ownership is raising rates to $100 a month, I hear. Absolutely asinine. RIP, Kennedy. If things massively mellow out in a couple weeks, it might not be as bad, but I'm not hopeful.

It was 820am when I took this pic, and I'm writing this review while no employee has still showed up to open the gym. Nothing irritates me more in this world than people who waste my time. If you can't hire people to show up on time to work, then the owner or manager needs to take charge. I've already seen several people leave, this is ridiculous and a waste of everyone's time. All 20 of us that are outside waiting! Unprofessional for a gym that's supposed to be a premium gym in the area! *PS it was 830am when I left, and still no one had showed up*

I was in SLO taking care of my mom, and had found Inferno on Instagram beforehand. So impressed with how badass the owner was I realized HAD to get my a** there! Definitely wasn't disappointed! What a great box, and boy what a blessing to be able to workout while away from home in my favorite place. Inferno is amazing, it's literally around the corner from the airport and the energy of the place is uber cool. The coaches are incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, motivating, encouraging and good hearted. The workouts are excellent, the music is awesome and the fellowship with everyone there is truly heartwarming. If you live near this place, stop scrolling the phone, get off the couch and drive down to Inferno and watch your body, mind and life change for the better. Are you mentally struggling? CrossFit is more than just fitness--it's cognitive behavior therapy--in which one is able to adopt healthier life perspectives after an hour of hard earned sweat...and the benefits are longer lasting. You start where you're at and the sky is the limit. So glad I found this gem while I was there. I can't wait to come back! Thank you so much for letting me join in.

The atmosphere is a tad more laid-back than other crossfit gyms in the area. The owner personally trains the majority of classes, and is always available for, and receptive to, feedback. He has consistently added classes (or opened his gym early) when a demand rises from his clients. Crossfit Grover Beach (CFGB) has multiple trainers. Several of the trainers are former clients, who have received certification and now instruct, in addition to competing at an amateur level in local and national competition. These folks are supportive, helpful, and knowledgeable in fitness, nutrition, and general wellness. CFGB does earn a 4-star rating in my book, due to a negative performance in the 2013 Crossfit Open competition. The trainers did not pay close enough attention to the requirements for a complete movement, and their top athlete was disqualified from the open for this reason. That athlete has proven himself this year, and is on the road to redemption for the entire box' reputation. It was a simple thing, to look at the clarification in the rules, and ensure that all athletes met the requirement, but the company has taken steps to ensure better practices henceforth. :::Edit::: I don't know why my location is posted as "Hanford," I live in Oceano. That is all for this edit.

Although COVID was still very much around in 2021, the gym reopened in the spring of that year. The COVID protocols were a bit funky... they required masks to enter the facility but once you were running on the treadmill, you could take them off?!? Didn't make sense to me. Anyhow, now that the mask mandate is over, it's kind of like "at your own risk". They offer wipes throughout the class (when switching groups) to sanitize the equipment for the next person. I do love the workout because I think it's the best bang for your buck, if you want an intense workout (mostly cardio) with about 15-20 minutes of strength training. You do a session on the treadmill (up to 30 minutes) of running at varied paces/inclines. Then a combination of rowing and strength training. I like to start on the treadmill. The bigger classes get split into three groups, with a 1/3 of the class starting on the treadmill, rower, or weight room. Bring a towel and water bottle!!! You will be dripping sweat by the end of it. The goal is to get at least 12 splat points (when your heart rate gets over 84%). To track this, you will have to buy the OTF heart monitor and you will see your progress on the screens around the room. The theory if you get 12+ splat points, you will burn extra calories over the next 24 hours. The coaches are all great. I especially like Sarah, Stephanie, and Jeff! They are all very encouraging during the workout. During the academic year, this location is filled with college girls from UCSB, just FYI. It's never hard to get into a class, and I usually wait until the morning of to book a class through their online app since there is a late cancellation policy if you don't cancel within 8 (?) hours of the scheduled class. I signed up for the Elite membership which gives me 8 classes a month, which works perfectly for me, as I do a lot of other forms of exercise. I love OTF and am glad it's part of my workout routine!!
