Have been going to this gym for over a year, so this review is long overdue. Headstrong combines everything you love about SLO and gym culture. Like most of SLO, everyone is incredibly friendly - from the staff to the coaches that will go out of their way to introduce themselves and always say hi when they see you in the gym. They have developed a community that only comes from continued and deliberate effort. They regularly host events to keep growing this community and you can see its size and strength at the 9am Saturday classes. This gym nailed the warehouse aesthetic while also keeping weight-lifters in mind. I have never had an issue finding a squat rack, which I can't say about any other gym I have been to. The free weights/dumbbells go in to the high 100s, where most gyms cap at 95/100lbs. In the warmer weather the outdoor turf-lined area is one of my favorite perks that I've also never had in other gyms. This place is a gym that's designed by people who actually use the gym and make it a point to continue making improvements for its members. Headstrong is hands down the best gym in SLO for both traditional gym goers and CrossFitters alike. They literally have any type of equipment you'd need and more space than you could ask for which also includes a really nice outdoor space for anyone who wants to get their tan on. The coaches, front desk folks and owner Robbie are always incredibly friendly and make you feel welcome anytime. The drop in rate for open gym is no doubt the most reasonable fee I've ever seen at $10/day. Feeling down? Want to be jacked and stacked? Go here it works. I came here 5'5 110 pounds and now I'm 6'6 lifting HEAPS. In all seriousness it's a great gym. They give a student discount that makes it pretty worth it. Even during "rush hours" there's minimal waiting around. Plenty of benches and racks so nothing to worry about there. Dumbbells go up to like 6000 or something (200 if I remember correctly but it probably is higher but I never look that far ahead). read more

Favorite gym I've ever been to! I think my favorite part is the tight knit community because it fosters such a supportive and motivating environment. A lot of people are jacked/intense gym rats so at first I was intimidated but everyone there is honestly so friendly. The owner, trainers, and all of the other staff members are also extremely nice and very knowledgeable about their work. Their classes are fun but challenging and the owner, Robbie, helped me improve my form sooo much. Headstrong also has a ton of strength training equipment and an outside area, so there's always something available for me to do (unlike the Cal Poly gym lol). I should add that it's also really easy to cancel/change your membership and they have a military/healthcare worker discount! read more

It is tough to find the words that haven't already been said about Headstrong. I have made tremendous improvements in my health, fitness, and athletic performance as a rugby player with the help of the Headstrong Fit team. The coaches are knowledgeable about body mechanics, movement patterns, fitness needs, optimal athlete training, and modifications for various injuries. In addition to what they already know, they continue to learn new movements and techniques to expand their ability to coach a variety of people. Within the walls of Headstrong, you can also get guidance from a certified nutritionist, chiropractic treatment, physical therapy, and certified sports massage. The gym is kept clean and the equipment is plentiful and in good repair. Workouts are designed to maximize what is available, and classes are kept small to get more personalized coaching. Coaches are willing and able to provide a workout modification for any physical limitations you might have. During the recent pandemic and lockdown, the gym staff set up home workouts and online support for each and every member. Workouts were designed for everyone to be able to do them from home no matter what equipment they had or did not have. Modifications and suggestions have been demonstrated, questions answered, and support offered to anyone that needs it. I highly recommend taking a few classes at Headstrong (once we get the all clear) The community workouts on Saturdays are free with a non perishable donation that goes to local charities. I've been coming to Headstrong for about 4 months, and it's already changed my life. I'm not really a gym guy. When I started going, I weight about 280 pounds (close to 100 pounds overweight), and I was honestly real intimidated. I had made a promise to myself and my wife that I would try out a gym and stick with a program. I'd made that promise for a couple years already, and had been failing over and over. So going into it, I really didn't have high hopes. What finally made me stick with it was a 6 week challenge the gym puts on. You meet with a nutritionist a couple times, you get unlimited gym membership, you join a Facebook group for support, and some other things. It's also pretty cool because if you succeed at certain parts of the challenge, you get most of your money back in credit to the gym, so there's a nice financial motivator to stick with it. During the 6 weeks, I lost 30-35 pounds, met a lot of friends, and have gained a new found confidence. Previously, I was honestly intimidated to come here. With a name like "Headstrong", and it being a pretty focused gym, I had assumed that the gym would be a lot of macho dudes, meat heads with cold personalities, etc. Though, I was very much wrong and have been blown away by how kind and willing to help the trainers are. I am still learning (and rapidly). I wouldn't have that learning if the trainers didn't constantly help me learn form and specific movements, correct those movements, etc. If this were any other gym, I would've given up: either due to a lack of knowing what to do, a lack of confidence, or due to injury caused by doing things improperly. Overall, at Headstrong, I've found a community for emotional support, a strong basis head knowledge to learn HOW to workout, and so many other things. As with anything, you get what you put in. I can guarantee you that if you dive into it head first and if you ask for help, you're going to get a mountain of value out of it. I could not be happier with the results (well, I guess it'd have been cool to walk out looking like Chris Hemsworth). When I first started I was a bit intimidated and overwhelmed. I'd been to gyms before but I'd never really had the structure and focus that I needed to stick with it. Anytime I was worried that I was doing something wrong or maybe just felt a little ridiculous; the coaches and staff were there to correct me, motivate me, and reassure me. I have never been a gym/CrossFit person but this is the first time I've been to a gym and felt genuinely successful and supported. I could have spent this money at any gym but I don't think any other gym would have had the staff that cared enough to work with me as much as they did. TLDR: if you're willing to make the effort, everyone here will do their best to help you be successful. More than just a room with gym equipment. I joined the gym a year ago for a 6 week challenge. I absolutely LOVE it! The facility is clean with lots of room to move about. I had two back injuries that physical therapy (6 months) and massage therapy (2 years) never healed. Within two weeks I was up and moving and feeling so much better. The coaches made motivations to the work outs for my back. After completing the challenge I signed on for a full year membership and getting ready to renew. The owner is amazing and kind, the coaches are compassionate and encouraging. The people who work out are all shapes and sizes and different levels of abilities. We laugh and push each other and sweat our butts off. I highly recommend, headstrong has helped improve so many different aspects of my life and my health. This gym is the best gym in the central coast!!!!!! Seriously, all of the coaches are attentive, well educated and are always friendly. They give great cue's for each movement and are super in-depth with any movements that can be scaled. No matter if you are a weekend warrior, a gym rat or can only make it in once or twice a week, they are always happy to see you. Robby (the owner) is well informed in all things health and wellness, he's a great resource for nutrition, body building, injury prehab and rehab. What I really love most about this gym is the community, it's very family friendly, dog friendly and they support a local non profit with donation based workouts on Saturdays. Whether you attend the group training or do MELT yoga with Chandra (hip hop yogini) just bring in a non perishable item to donate and you get to sweat for free while giving back to others. They also are affiliated with #SweatAngels network so each time you "check in" to headstrong on Facebook, it supports a global non profit. Also they have other resources on site for different types of health- nutritionist, massage, and human movement specialists. Spin with Carley is such a good time between her music choice and kicking our butts but still having fun is everything! Then you have Chelsea, Jenna, Maddie and Melissa for heat and/or small group, they make sure you have the correct form and push yourself every workout! I always look forward to my workout with Melissa and Chelsea at 12pm small group or 12:30 heat classes! All the trainers are so nice and always looking to help you improve and meet your goals! Headstrong Fitness has changed my life!! I came into this gym and specifically this challenge terrified of what was to come and expecting to fail at it like I do everything else. I was especially terrified because I had just had a heart attack two weeks before I signed up, but I knew I needed a life change!! After years of looking for the right gym (and honestly being a tough critic) I walked in the door, and have never once regretted it. Each workout is different and challenging. I learned about this place from friends who have been with them since the beginning. They have had nothing but good things to say about it. I joined the six week challenge in order to get a jumpstart on my fitness. The staff and the programming was put together in a very clear and understandable way in order to help me achieve my goal. As a physical therapist, I respect evidence-based practice. The staff is very knowledgeable and they pull from research as their design their formatting. I joined Headstrong Fit back in March of 2018 looking for an early morning class schedule that would enable me to be in the office by 8:00am. Being pushed was exactly what I needed.
