We have rented apartments and houses in a variety of cities in the U.S. and abroad and I found the apartment we rented from onefinestay in London to be the worst experience to date.
There were three key factors in deciding to rent the apartment we selected: (1) location - this was correctly reflected on the description; (2) King Size Bed; (3) Outdoor Patio with seating area for those frequent lovely days of good London weather!
Upon arrival, we found out that the king size bed was really a queen. We were given a home fact sheet that stated that the patio (originally pictured on the website with table and chairs when we selected/reserved this flat) was dangerous/unavailable for use but the "balcony" - so narrow that my child could not stand outside on it and have us clothes the patio doors behind her -- two strikes out of three....
After noting that it would have been helpful to describe the apartment as being on the third floor with no elevator, our assigned greeter suggested that we should have read the "home truths" -- I went back and looked at the site and the information we had received - there was no mention of numerous flights of stairs or the lack of an elevator. Many apartments on the site that are on high floors with no elevators mention that, but this one did not. We traveled with a lot of luggage and had been instructed by the doctors "not to lift anything heavy" -- dragging 6 heavy bags (2 were nearly 60 lbs) up three flights of stairs likely did not meet that criteria.
There were other "surprises" -- the shower was in the bath tub, totally fine, but had absolutely no curtain or glass doors so when you showered, the entire room/floor was covered in water which there was a small hand held 12 inch squeegie to "push" the water toward the drain. Add five-ten minutes on your hands and needs to every shower event to clean the water off the floor so you could use the sink and toilet.
In addition to the above, the kitchen was horribly equipped -- no toaster, no microwave, no vegetable peeler, no cheese grater....the "starter" supplies did not include any basics like salt or sugar or olive oil/vinegar.
The tub stopper was broken. We called in the tub stopper on Saturday; it was finally repaired on Thursday.
The company provides iPhones which are only marginally helpful as you can't download any apps like London Guides or Tube maps and the phone we were assigned kept losing signal when our other iPhone had full bars and then would only start working again after turning it off completely. I was even cut off when talking to the office and then never called back or followed up on my request (for a toaster). They told us that we had unlimited international texts but at least half of the ones I tried to send were returned.
The place we rented was slightly expensive than the 5 star hotel, but we had hoped to gain more space and a kitchen to make one meal a day. Over nine days, we ate two breakfasts and threw away $100s in food that we had purchased on our way to the apartment on check-in day as the kitchen was so poorly equipped with pots, utensils, etc. If it had been billed as a place to make a quick scrambled egg, sure, but beyond that and a salad, there was no microwave, toaster, etc.
Everyone we spoke with at the agency was lovely, but completely ineffective and frankly uninterested in the issues except to say that they would do their best to address it for future guests but their hands were tied b/c certain improvements/changes were at the discretion of the owner.
Other items that are noted as being provided by onefinestay, such as bath amenities for each registered guest (in our case 3) were barely enough for one person, preferably one person with no hair,,,,there were no robes provided and only 2 pillows per bed. (These were noted on their website as being part of every stay.)
On the only plus side, the cleaning people were fantastic - the place was immaculate after they came. The towels were very high quality and large.
We have rented for a number of agencies and never have we met a team so disinterested in our feedback, I suppose that is why the only client testimonials on their website are screened by the company and all include "lovely" comments on their apartments....entirely disappointing. read more
