I feel very comfortable coming in now that they're reopened during Covid. Extreme care is taken to distance people, and everyone wears masks. There's a pre-visit questionnaire and on-site temp check etc. I've been seeing Andrew (used to see Daphne but she's not on the schedule right now). He is very professional. The work on my knee injury really helped. I'm working on other minor issues and stresses right now. I find in easy to relax into the "acunap," as the sign says. It's a very chill atmosphere that makes me want to continue to go often. Now that they've closed Oasis hot tubs (sadness!), it's more important than ever to find healing modalities. Daphne is wonderful! I've had three sessions in the last week and a half and each visit has been a very positive experience. I thought that I would be uncomfortable being in a room while other treatments were going on, but to be honest, it's so quiet and relaxing that I don't notice it at all. Daphne is very thorough and asked a lot of questions so that she could really understand my physical/mental state. I went in for some swelling/pain behind my knee and I've already seen some improvements. I'm definitely feeling more relaxed and I've managed to fall asleep all three whiles after she inserted the needles. Hard to imagine feeling so relaxed when you've got needles poking out of various parts of your body, but she's that good and the ambiance is that relaxing! Payment is based on a sliding scale, no questions asked. I think it's a noble thing to bring acupuncture costs down to where treatment is realistic and affordable for individuals. I had my 3rd appointment there today. I was initially skeptical about the whole "group experience" and I also had some concern about needle sterility because I am new to acupuncture. I can honestly say that the room is clean, very quiet and relaxing. All chairs recline, there is calming sound/music (I.e. waterfalls) playing and all patients really respect the space and do not speak except when whispering to the acupuncturist about treatment needs. For anyone concerned about needle sterility, the unopened packages of needles are in plain view. They are used once and discarded in sharps containers. I also asked questions about this and Daphne was very patient and informative. I have now seen both Daphne and Dalit. They both have a very holistic approach. They are also kind and attentive. I found Dalit to be exceptionally warm and empathetic. She shows care and concern for all of her patients and no matter how busy things are, when it is your "turn" you have her undivided attention. Whether you are new to acupuncture or accustomed to this treatment method, they will disappoint. This place is amazing. I went in for my first relax treatment about a week or so ago. Dave did my treatment and all I can say is that he created an incredible healing space. He is a very gifted acupuncturist and healer. Having come in for acupuncture due to so stress I was dealing with in my life, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate Dave and the space he created for me to work through what I was dealing with. I felt much more relaxed and centered after my treatment. The physical space is very calming as well. Although it is a community space, it feels very private and everyone is very respectful of each other. The room in very peaceful, dimly lit, and quiet with comfortable chairs that allow you to let go and relax. I have a lot of respect for this establishment and what they provide. What they do here is really quite lovely; sliding scale, walk-in (and by appointment) acupuncture here in Union Square. I recommend coming in during the week during normal business hours, though. I have gone then, and I have gone on Sundays. When I go on Sunday with an appointment it is way busy, they are a little overwhelmed, etc. I have some issues I am more comfortable relating with a chart, than just saying aloud, and they are cramped for time so can't quite be thorough anyway. On weekdays however, maybe it is just the person I saw (will need to double check the name), but she is super thorough and attentive, takes time to listen to your problems and explore the scope of what acupuncture can treat, etc. Def't a community institution to support! read more

Update: I hadn't been in to OSCA in awhile (what can I say, I've had a nice clean bill of health lately). However, a situation involving bee stings and my sinuses demanded it. Daphne was, as always, warm and focused. I could feel the energy working right away. Prior to going in, I was experiencing a lot of pain, itching, and tenderness in the affected areas, not to mention some really uncomfortable swelling on my face. Even though she has other patients waiting or in the process of relaxing, she never makes you feel as though you are rushed. OSCA is amazing! I am going through a particularly difficult time right now both emotionally and physically and I thought I would give acupuncture a try. I read a lot of Yelp reviews to figure out where to go. Truthfully the positive reviews here along with the sliding payment scale ($20 - $40 + a one-time $10 intake fee) made me choose OSCA. So far I have only worked with Daphne and she's amazing. The sessions are very relaxing. She takes time to listen to you, inserts the needles (painless), cocoons you in blankets, and then you sit back and relax (sleep) until you feel like you're finished (plan on a little more than an hour). Since starting acupuncture I'm now sleeping a full night for the first time in forever and I'm finding it easier to get up and get going in the morning. When I've come in stressed and tense I have left like a new person. The sliding payment scale means that I can continue multiple treatments a week (and I'm an underpaid nonprofit worker). Beautiful space!! Very relaxing. I went with my boyfriend today (it was his first time) and he was very pleased with the results. He went in because his back was in considerable, acute pain, and walked out, for the first time in two days, without any serious discomfort. We are going again tmrw and will absolutely be coming in frequently. The prices here are on a sliding scale fee and are between $20-40. In CT, it averages around $80 per session. It's amazing to have accessibility to affordable care at a decent price and be able to go as often as we need. I have been suffering from chronic pain for 4 years now. After surgery and pain medications, my doctor seemed at a loss for how to help me cope. This is my first review ever!!!!!! The only reason why I am sharing my review with all of you is because of my own personal healing story with Daphne, otherwise, I would not be writing at all. The reason I came to Open Space Community Acupuncture was only because I read other Yelpers reviews, who described in great detail how practitioner Daphne helped them with their problems. I am grateful and can attest to my own personal healing experience with Daphne. If you are reading this review, you are doing the right thing by getting informed from the clients who use OSCA services. I had a constant lower back problem on my left side, I tried Yoga, stopped running and had deep tissue massage, but NOTHING would make the uncomfortable pain I felt go away. This was until I went to OSCA. My first visit was FREE and Daphne listened to my complaints attentively. Immediately, I felt a connection with Daphne because her personality is warm, her smile is genuine and she exudes wisdom. After five visits, I no longer felt the pain and I am happy to say that I am able to run again without feeling this lower back pain I was suffering from. I also took the opportunity to work on other things with Daphne that I needed help with. I was trying to stop coffee, chocolate and sugar addiction, and Daphne's has completely helped me with these cravings. I can honestly say that I no longer drink coffee nor any caffeinated drinks, I also do not eat candy (twix, sneakers, etc.) and I hardly have foods that contain more than 4 grams of sugar. The price range is what makes this valuable treatment the best thing you can ever do for yourself. If you have 15 to 20 dollars to spend at a bar or a nightclub, or to do your nails or hair, then you have money to make an appointment and work on your health. Awesome & Affordable!!! I really, really like this place. Daphne is excellent, very knowledgeable. She really listens to whatever issues you're having and places the needles accordingly. I felt such a major difference in both my physical and emotional state after my first visit, and with each weekly visit, I'm feeling better and better. I can feel the stress leaving my body, and my back pain (main reason for my visit) is significantly better. I wasn't sure how I'd like the community space, but it is completely unobtrusive for me. I get into my chair, and I'm so busy relaxing/healing from my treatment that I feel absolutely no issue about having others in their chairs nearby. We're all there for our treatments, no need to worry about nothing else. It is very quiet (we whisper whenever we need to speak), and it is such a peaceful environment. The chairs are all "Lazy-Boy" type, and they push back so you can lie down and really relax. Daphne also uses the clever idea of placing a small box between your ankles/calves before placing a blanket over you for warmth--so that the needles will not be disturbed. An added touch is that the boxes are covered in decorative paper. The place is clean, well-supplied, and colorful...all in all a fantastic atmosphere. It is right near where I live, in Somerville's Union Square, and the sliding scale ($15-$40) is terrific for my needs. Other places nearby charge around $80 an hour (for a session in a private room) and for me, that's just not worth it. There are a lot of financially-challenged folks these days, and I really feel that this place is a godsend. I have become a faithful customer, for sure! read more

Admittedly, and perhaps like you, I was a bit skeptical about community acupuncture before my first visit. I've done quite a bit of acupuncture in the past, with a brilliant and highly qualified acupuncturist out west, but financially, at $60-70 a session, it wasn't very sustainable. After moving to Cambridge I had a few groupon acupuncture sessions at various places, which were decent, but overall not a great value. The acupuncturists were for the most part knowledgeable, but all of the places ended up being way too expensive and all the acupuncturists lacked real warmth and compassion because their main objective was monetary. I never felt like my health was really a priority. Instead of listening and hearing me, I was constantly talked at. When I saw a groupon for Open Space acupuncture, I figured, why not - the price was very reasonable and I was still on the prowl for a good spot. Of course, I didn't expect much. I certainly didn't expect to continue after my groupon session expired. Before my first visit, I'd never done community acupuncture before, let alone acupuncture in a lazy boy instead of on a doctor's table. To me, it sounded a bit bizarre. And with prices being so affordable, I assumed the practitioners wouldn't be that qualified. Of course, I couldn't have been more wrong. Daphne (the head acupuncturist who opened the place) is not only extremely knowledgeable and highly qualified, but she's also very personable, caring, gentle, and compassionate. She never talks at me, but instead always listens with attentiveness, patience and understanding. Daphne recently hired another acupuncturist, Dalit Waller, who I've had once and found equally outstanding. They have different acupuncture backgrounds, meaning they belong to two different traditions, so their techniques do vary. You might find one technique more in tune with your needs than the other, but I've found a combination of the two (seeing Daphne one time and Dalit the next) quite beneficial. In terms of the community acupuncture approach, I actually don't mind it at all. Not only does community acupuncture enable affordability (you pay on a sliding scale between $15-$45(I think), it also hasn't had any negative impact on the quality of treatment I've received. And since everyone is so relaxed and pretty much passed out, it's very quiet (except for the occasional person who snores, or on Saturday morning when the farmers market is right outside - get some fresh flowers when you leave!). In terms of the lazy boys, they work perfectly well and are very comfortable - they're each different, so try a variety of chairs until you find the perfect fit. Or, if you have back pain like me, you might prefer the flat doctor's table, which they also have. Needless to say, I've been going to Open Space Community acupuncture regularly (4-5 times a week) for almost two months now and I absolutely love it. You certainly don't need acupuncture that often to see results, but I've found it so relaxing and rejuvenating - both during the sessions and after - that I just can't help myself. I have anxiety, severe allergies, asthma, congestion, back pain, stiff muscles after exercising, you name it - I'm riddled with issues - and I'm so grateful for the relief Daphne has brought me on all fronts. I was on numerous allergy medications and I was taking Advil for my back quite regularly, both of which I've been able to significantly reduce. When I went in after over exercising and not being able to walk (my calves were so stiff), an hour later they were relaxed and almost back to normal (which was hard for me to believe). And not only have I felt relief from my anxiety during the sessions, I've also felt so much more in tune with my body and mind since I've started the treatments and am able to manage my anxiety with much more ease. Of course, acupuncture is generally not considered an instantaneous fix or miraculous cure and while you're likely to experience immediate relief from acute pain, it's more of a long-term process (in my opinion). And considering that it's a process, there's little point in starting if it's not financially sustainable. Open space is wonderful because it provides an opportunity for everyone, regardless of financial backing, to experience this process of healing and benefit from pr oven techniques that are otherwise way too costly. At the very least, it enables people who may be curious about acupuncture to try it out and see what they're missing (the first treatment is free at open space and there's no obligation or pressure to continue). So try it. Whenever you have time, go to Union square and pop in for a free treatment. You can stay as long as you like, and if you only want one needle because you're scared it's going hurt (which it doesn't), then do that. Open Space has been such an amazing and valuable experience for me and I hope it will be for you as well read more

I had the most absolutely lovely acupuncturists, twice! Dalit and Lani are fantastic. Truly talented with warm soothing voices, and a visible love for their passion! I love the ability to drop in to a quiet space when the world is a bit too busy for me. Open space generally is a safe haven when I'm feeling the need to have a moment to myself to recharge. And GOOD NEWS folks if your dog is suffering dry skin, pain, or insomnia they treat pets too! Or at least that's how it seemed today when I was awakened to the sound of a jingling dog collar lasting more than 10 minutes brought in by an acupuncturist that works there, Daphne. It's so great that Somerville is now progressing to dog friendly acupuncture. Be warned if you have allergies, or a fear of dogs this may not be the place for you. If you prefer a nice quiet space, this may also not be the place for you as loud Dog collars are encouraged. So please put on some jingle bells, keep your cell phones on, and sit back for this new age experience. What can I say about Open Space Community Acupuncture that hasn't already been said...The service they provide to the community just warms my heart and nourishes my soul! Having never been to acupuncture before I decided to give it a try for some female issues. I found OSCA here on Yelp & its pretty close to my house so I thought what the heck. I've never looked back! Daphne & her amazing team of Acupuncturists are AMAZING! Not sure what to expect I filled out my new patient questionnaire and headed in. The moment I stepped inside I just felt surrounded by warmth which eased my nerves. I picked my comfy recliner & settled in. Immediately I realized, hmm, this is not at all uncomfortable. The other patients already receiving their treatment were well into their own zen space. What I did feel was the calming energy of the group and tried to absorb it. Daphne came over pretty quickly. She took all the time I needed to review my questionnaire & determine the best course of treatment. Needles were inserted & I was on my way. They did not hurt at all. What I felt was a sense of peace & relaxation. It should be noted i'm a pretty energetic person & truly I felt calm, no easy feat! What I love is that all the practitioners encourage you to see the others, you'll get a different experience with each of the Ladies. That workplace spirit is so rare & i'm happy they encourage it. I've seen Daphne, Lani & Melissa & I could not pick a favorite. Though Daphne has a special place in my heart because she was my first Acupuncturist. I've not seen Dalit but that is only because of my appointment scheduling. I have no doubt she's great too. Oh you can schedule appts online! And they have appts 7 days/week! Did I mention the sliding pay scale? Again, for the service these Ladies provide it is almost criminal, but I am willing to bet every person pays what they can afford if not more. there is no reason not to give these folks five stars. why, you might ask? acupuncture can get expensive, especially if you're like most people and don't have healthcare coverage for it. it's a sliding scale. no questions. honor code. pay by salary bracket or whatever you can. the practitioners are all sweethearts, kind, friendly, well-meaning. many, many comfy chairs, and they give you blankets to pass out for a while while the needling does its thing. the prices are reasonable enough that you can go regularly without breaking the bank -- which as with many practices (ex. yoga) are better when additive with some frequency. acupuncture is amazing for many things -- several i can think of off the top of my head include chronic pain, pain, migraines, fertility (hormonal stuff), headaches, anxiety, insomnia. some of the same benefits that herbal chinese medicine and reflexology/massage and yoga (all limbs) provide, but through different avenues. and it's a couple blocks from where i live, so i have no excuse not to give them some love. they help make union square awesome. read more

I went to a free open house acupuncture night for my first visit here. Although I had never done acupuncture before, I had studied Tai Chi and had positive experiences with TCM. I will say that within one session, one session where there were 8 other people in the room, Daphne basically solved a long term neck problem I had had since spraining my ankle. I went back to one more session (sliding scale, amazing), and boom, all pain gone. Permanently. There are plenty of fine providers of "healing" services, but who just don't have the feel (or chi) or skill. Daphne is the exception. Sometimes, someone just has "it". Located in Union Square, OSCA consists of one open room and lots of recliners. You make an appointment online (super convenient) and then sign in and take a seat. The acupuncturist then checks in with you and briefly discusses what treatment you would like. While it may seem awkward to have acupuncture performed in a group, it really isn't. The space is very calming, with dim lighting and pleasant ambient sounds like the ocean or rain. Everything is quiet and respectful. While this setup is fairly unusual in the US, evidently its very common is Asia and it makes a lot of sense as treatment can be provided at a very reasonable cost. There is a sliding scale from $20-$45 based on income (honor system) and you pay what you can. I would say if you need intensive acupuncture therapy due to injury or whatnot, seeing a traditional acupuncturist may be more beneficial but for minor aches and pains, stress or wellness, I cannot recommend this place enough. read more

I received a treatment from Daphne, the owner of Open Space, and have scheduled another. The space is very warm and relaxing, and I did not feel at all uncomfortable by the other treatments going on. There are about 8-10 tables and reclining chairs with cozy blankets and nice lighting. Daphne regularly checked in and made adjustments during my hour long treatment. I love this place! I started getting acupuncture from Dalit a couple of years ago when she practiced in Cambridge - neck pain got me in the door but I stayed because of the excellent mood & energy benefits (and Dalit's pretty great, too!). When she started working at Open Space, I was thrilled as the community clinic setting made regular treatments affordable (sliding scale, $20-40). When I was getting ready to quit smoking, the clinic worked with me to make frequent treatments even more affordable, and it has been a god-send! I never thought I'd actually be able to quit smoking - and after 20 years of a daily habit, I figured if I did ever quit, I'd be miserable. Quite the contrary! I believe that the acupuncture component of my 'quit plan' has played a vital role in my ability to stay quit thus far, and for a generally good mood throughout - and when I did struggle, Daphne & Dalit worked to tailor treatments toward my complaints. These women, and this place, is stellar. I'd give them 6 stars if I could. True to the tradition of acupuncture, which treasures a shared space for rest and healing, it's really a great spot. And more than affordable. I couldn't afford it any other way, but even if I could, I would still come to these women. Dalit and Daphne each have their own style and form of practicing and bring a fresh perspective to supporting me - mind, body, and spirit. The space is cozy, modest, comfortable, and well used. The music they play is tasteful. I have spend hours sleeping with needles in that place. I leave feeling well nurtured and attended to. It's a great refuge. read more
