I have been going to this Optical Outlets store for several years. Although you have to deal with a constant barrage of upselling for glasses and lenses you don't need, the doctor was good and attentive and provided good service. She has since left. This last visit was AWFUL! I had an appointment and showed up 10 minutes early. After waiting for an hour, the new "doctor" came out, called my name, and took me into a room. It was not an exam room, more like a break room that was not clean. He used the flashlight on his phone to shine into my eyes and then proceeded to hand me a folded up paper towel from a grungy roll of paper towels to cover an eye while I followed his fingers. He's a doctor but he does not have an eye occluder to cover my eye or a handheld light? What the heck?? He asked if he could dilate my eyes to which I responded no. He then told me to go back out in the waiting area and he would get to me shortly. After another 45 minutes, I was seen by no one. The staff person at the front desk was nice enough but there was nothing she could do. She asked if I wanted to reschedule for 2 weeks out to which I said "No, I will never be coming back." read more

A LESSON LEARNED; from a friend who stands up for people who are mistreated at their workplace. She said, "If I don't do it, who will." Today, while checking out at an Optical Outlet, Tarpon Springs the young man waiting on me asked for verification of my order from the 2 older women working there. One looked away & took a phone call, that the front desk should have handled, and the other scowled as she quickly glanced at his work. He was clearly technically competent but learning the company systems. As I returned home, one of the women called me saying I must come back because the order was done incorrectly, that there is a fee that wasn't charged. I kindly questioned the fee. She repeated that I must come back, the order has to be redone. I began to tell her my observation of the 2 women ( she was one) who wouldn't take a moment to verify the young man's work. She interrupted me with a claim of another customer's issue prioritizing her coworker's request. (Not my problem). With that, it was clear she needed to be reminded that she & the other woman were the reason for this miss communication. I asked again that she inform me of the fee and that I would give her my credit card #, OR I could speak with her manager about her performance from, perhaps a former 3 year customer's point of view. She became compliant and we settled the bill. In closing, I reminded her to help her associates in the future. PAY IT FORWARD P.S. I had to call the store back after 3 days of not receiving my requested copy of the fee receipt via email. Expecting my eyeglasses delivery to go better than what I've experienced so far. read more

I've been wearing glasses for over 60 years and this was by far the best exam I have had in a long time. Dr. Birnbaum was very thorough. I will drive the distance from Dunedin to Tarpon Springs just to have her exam my eyes. I picked up my new glasses and I could see great! I love them so much I went back to buy a backup pair. I wanted the same person (Nicholyn) to put the dot on the glasses. I know that has a lot to do with seeing correctly with progressive lenses. She did an AWESOME job so I wanted her for my second pair also. I was lucky she was working that day or I would have had to make another trip. I was not greeted and manager was grumpy and unfriendly. i said, I don't think this is the store for me and she said, I think you're right. I immediately walked out. Here's the kicker. I went to the other Optical Outlets in New Port Richey. They got a 5 star review. So nice to me. I always say it only takes one employee to make a business suffer profits. Terrible experience. The glasses I was given were all wrong, bad prescription and they refused to correct them. I was told to find another optometrist. Rude doctor and her assistant. The glasses were useless. The prescription was weaker than the one I had over a year ago. They blamed it on cataracts but my old glasses work fine because my cataracts are not very bad. I thought I would try Optical Outlets because of their advertisement and special sale. I told them the glasses were wrong and I couldn't see with them. I was told to come back for a new exam but when I did she (Dr Birnbaum) refused to see me and an assistant told me to find another optometrist. Worst medical experience I ever had. I have been there five times now and still don't have a pair of glasses that work. The staff acts like I am inconveniencing them by being there. My glasses were made improperly and we're not usable when I brought it to their attention they acted like it was my fault. including my insurance I have spent a total of over $650 for two pairs of glasses. I completely returned one pair for a refund as they were not the proper prescription and the bifocals were in the wrong place. Currently they have the other pair for the second time the first time the holes were drilled wrong in the lens, and they sat cockeyed on my face. At that time I mentioned I thought the bifocals were too high they told me to wear them and see if I got used to them . The only way I could wear them to see is to look down at the ground all the time..these are some of the rudest people I have ever met and their customer service skills are in the toilet. for the second time they have my glasses and they said they would contact me when they are ready. After I pick these up, I will never see them again, and I will inform my insurance company that if this is their preferred provider, they are seriously cheating their customers. read more

Less than a week ago I had a complete (couldn't have my eyes dilated because I didn't have anyone with me but the doctor told me that I could come back at any time to complete the exam at no additional charge) eye exam and selection of two pairs of glasses. Today I received the glasses and was blown away at how good they looked. I forgot to stipulate what color lenses I wanted for the dark glasses and found that the lenses matched the frames. I had been in before just to order contacts and they were efficient at that time. Went in today for a full eye exam and to order contacts. Front office staff stated that they didn't accept my insurance but once I went to my vehicle and phoned the insurance company, I learned that my vision plan was offered through BCBS but managed through VSP... so, they were a preferred provider after all. I felt a little overwhelmed by the information the insurance/office person provided - just didn't feel like she did a good job of describing my benefits. She was very fast and whipped through my benefits like a tornado. I caught most of it but, if you were an older person or not familiar with insurance, you probably would have felt lost. In fact, she tried to explain a situation to an older lady who came in and ended up telling her she just needed to go back to her ophthalmologist to get a prescription..... watching it all unfold, I didn't feel like the older woman every really understood what the office staff was saying to her other than to go back to her main ophthalmologist. Even I had difficulty understanding the staff's reasoning. I did feel like I got a comprehensive eye exam and I noticed that the staff as well as the optometrist cleaned the equipment before I was asked to put my face up to the machines... to me, that is always important since I feel that many providers skimp on this area. I ordered my contacts and will be waiting for a call to come back in to pick them up. My opinion.... I wish they would take a little more time to make sure you understand your insurance benefits and explain things in a way a "non-professional" could understand. read more

Very disappointed with Optical Outlets. Went to their Tarpon Springs location because they accept my VSP insurance. Called first and stated I was looking for another pair of my glasses, not looking for an eye exam (recently had an exam but did not have a copy of my Rx). When I arrived at the store I asked them to use my existing glasses to determine my prescription. I was told they could not do that and I needed to make an appointment for an eye exam. Next available appointment was 48 hours later. They provided me with misinformation about not being able to determine my prescription from an existing pair of glasses. Went to another optical store and they were able to determine my prescription from my existing glasses. I got a $600 pair of glasses for $148 with my VSP insurance. read more

The manager Nickolyn was helping me with a problem when she was ordering my frames, She went over and beyond to help me. About the most incompetent staff I have ever encountered. I had a 10:15am appointment and I arrived at 10:00am as I had a busy day and wanted to make sure I am in and out asap. Girl the front desk with short hair and tattoos on her arms checks me in and asked if I filled out info online and I says yes as I had done this a week earlier. 10:15am goes by and no one comes to get me. 10:30am, doctor is chatting with the other doctor about getting the covid vaccine and how her husband has an appointment on Wednesday blah blah blah. Meanwhile I am still waiting...finally I asked another girl sitting in the front desk how much longer should I expect to wait and why is doctor a chatter box when I am waiting. Turns out they never checked me in when I arrived, could not find my paperwork that I previously filled out and I was beyond annoyed so I walked out at 10:50am. Went there to get a pair of glasses covered under my medicare and then went back a few days later to get the December special or 2 pairs of no line bifocals for 49.95 and when I went back to pick up all three I could see out of them distance but could not read from them(all three pairs) and told them that and they said I would adjust to them. I Told them I could not read anything and they checked the prescription and said that it was right. still couldn't read anything. They gave me someones else's receipt for the glasses and didn't correct that either, I now have three pairs of glasses, the one from medicare and the two Hateful condescending people. read more

I don't know why I even returned to this place. The staff is absolutely disgusting!! They will treat you like it's a burden to service you. Especially the woman that works in the front. Wish I had her name. She likes to yell out your financial information in front of everyone. As if to force you into paying for a service even if you are not ready too. She yells out your name and tells you that your insurance will not cover anything. Then proceeds to yell out, how much you have to pay out of pocket, then she would ask if you are ok paying that amount upfront. Everyone's eyes and ears are on you instantly because she has that loud obnoxious voice. If you can't afford to pay that amount out of pocket at the moment you have to walk out of that place with your head down and humiliated just like I did. She didn't care to ask if I needed to reschedule. Let me also mention, I called ahead of time to make sure my insurance plan was in network and they accept it. I knew I may have to pay some money and I was prepared to do so; however, prices kept changing. For them to charge me to measure my eyes for contacts, when I've done that same exam before, less then a year ago. Makes no sense to me. Because I don't measure my eyeballs every time I re order contacts using the same prescription. I felt like that lady was condescending down to me and took it extra personal because she didn't do it to anyone else there. I was the only black person in that store and felt like that itself brought extra attention to me. I'm not one to cry out race unnecessarily and I'm used to not paying any mind to it, because race is not a new thing in this world and won't be going away either. But when you are the only person of color and your financial situation is being discussed in front of everyone it puts a lot more pressure on you. I will always need glasses and two of my kids will too. But I assure you that Optical outlet in Tarpon springs will never have our service again! read more

Beware of this store - they are masters at bait and switch. I bought 2 pairs of glasses under their $ 49.99 deal and paid extra for polycarbonate lenses and anti-glare coating for both. Both don't seem to have any coating. The salesperson claims one of them has a coating and that I paid for coating only on one of them. He says only the "premium" version of the coating will show the rainbow colors. My older pair from Vision Works I can clearly see the rainbow colors. The salesman was extremely rude. They sent me a text 4 days after my order saying the glasses were ready - but they were not. It took more than 2 weeks to get them finally. read more

I went to the Tarpon Springs store for an exam & new lenses for my existing frames after an earlier visit with my daughter to get an exam & new glasses. Although they were very busy, they were able to process our arrival with reasonable promptness with a bit of patience on our part, and I had a very favorable overall first impression of their entire operation which prompted me to book my own appointment with them, and to drive past a dozen or more eyeglass retail outlets between my home in St. Pete to return to this location. Their Optometrist, Dr. Birnbaum, took the time to give me a thorough exam as well as to advise me on aspects of eye care and corrective procedures I may need to consider in the future, which helped me feel more comfortable about my prospects for long term vision care. She also cheerfully took my follow-up call regarding recommendations for eye drops and some great usage tips for them to help me in my long periods of work in front of a computer. The staff were very courteous, professional, and were able to quickly assess my needs, the anticipated cost to get what I needed, and did not pressure me to purchase anything beyond what I wanted. They even attempted to correct a problem with my existing frames to support my decision to keep them; however while waiting for my exam results, I found a great set of frames at a very reasonable price, so I ended up getting new frames after all. Finally, as an unexpected bonus their representative, Leilani, kindly helped me to get an even bigger allowance through my insurance than I originally anticipated for the frames purchase (which went above & beyond anything I expected) so I was delighted with my purchase costs as well as very pleased with the great service & competence of the entire staff. The doctor spent less than 5 minutes with me and told me there was no way that they could correct me to better than 20/40. I have had good vision until I hit 50 and I know that my eyes can be corrected to perfect. My glasses were terrible. After having them redo the glasses once with no improvement, they asked me if I wanted to see their other doctor, who is there only on Wednesdays. I cannot get there on Wednesday, so I left and went elsewhere. read more

There is not a better place to go than Optical Outlets. Every time for some reason I have ended up at the big ones, they are a rip off, did not do my eyes right, etc. Dr. Ingraham( ?) was so professional. He also did not have to dilate my eyes as they were very co-operative for him. I had a pre exam with Chris and then he helped pick my glasses. I was not sold over priced like most others do. I could have gotten upgrades, but why, when with my insurance I got a pair so reasonable. There is no pushing like Vision Works where you can't get anything under about $150. I could have bought 10 glasses here for that. I am thrilled at how nice I was treated with no pressure of anything by both the Dr, and Chris. You should call and be sure they are there band make your appointment when they are. I know who to ask for in 2019 now. Last year I did not make my 2017 appointment in time an the Dr. happened to be on vacation. This year I made it in plenty of time.
