Every now and then on my visits to Ybor city, I like to step foot in this store and take a look at their merchandise. It usually smells of clean burning fragrant incense in here (or it could just be the merchandise). Almost all of their products hail from Southeast Asia directly. They have a wide assortment of incense scents(and accessories) to choose from, furniture, artifacts, jewelry, etc. The store is kept very organized every time I visit. The overhead music is a relatively unique and pleasant. Every now and then, they throw worldbeat style into the mix. The prices are a bit higher due to the fact that everything is an import. However, it's worth the price if you are willing to pay for the authenticity and quality. They do have more affordable and even clearance items too. For example, simple stuff like incense and their holders, etc. There's usually a friendly shopkeeper at the checkout counter willing to answer your questions. Whether or not I buy anything here, it's always a pleasure just to browse through their stuff. It's like I'm window-shopping through an ancient silk road market.

I went to Shaunessy's amazing store during the holidays to find a unique, one-of-a-kind piece for my Mom's Christmas gift. During my 'raising kids' years, Mom and I used to spend countless hours in these types of shops. On weekends, we also would go to Estate Sales to find collectibles for our homes. I knew she would love anything from here. This shop is a place where you will find unique items that eventually will be collectibles in the future, or even now, because many of them already are antiques. One of the things I saw here that was of particular interest, because of its unusual nature, was made by a local woodworker. He crafts fruit holder centerpieces, made out of old oak wine barrels and old whiskey barrels. Use your imagination for the usage on a dining room table, buffet/sideboard top, and even just on the kitchen counter. This craftsman fashions the bent wood into lovely, long, curving and graceful centerpieces that hold and display items inside the indentations he makes in the strip of wood. There were many different styles, some holding 6 or 7 single lemons, spaced about an inch apart, which gave the piece a pop of color. There also were others with 6 votive candles placed in a row. A really unique gift that looks spectacular on the dining table. Speaking of custom pieces, Shaunessy's makes many of them, including 'farm' and other types of tables in different shapes and sizes, and those ever-so-popular custom-made barn doors, which interior designers are now decorating with, for everything from pantry doors to closet doors and beyond. There are two floors of goodies in the main converted farmhouse building (complete with treasure-filled porch), plus two outside "Pish Posh" buildings, which hold lots of outdoor-use treasures, such as galvanized flower buckets. Because there are many merchants represented here, the pricing can be extraordinarily inexpensive in some stalls while a bit overpriced in others. But overall, the pricing is pretty fair. I love looking through each stall and finding little treasures you just can't find anywhere else. On this trip, I found what I was looking for - a milk glass pedestal bowl - but it was a little overpriced compared to the previous thrift shop I had seen it at, so I passed on it. But my favorite time to shop at the Mercantile is just before the holidays. They always have such lovely and unique gifts for my family and friends (and myself).
