I really wanted to fall in love with Orange Peel Cafe.
A quaint little cottage on the corner of Evans St and Beattie St, the cute 'cafe' inscribed awning welcomes you inside and the tables outside this little shop soak in the sun all morning. Every time I drive past I dream about sipping a little coffee on their doorstep and reading the paper in this quiet but beautiful neck of the woods.
My hopes rose when I entered the cafe to be greeted cheerily by two young guys. Good service was a good sign. We sat in the sun and ordered our piccolos, waiting as a few cars drove by, the scent of jasmine drifting around Balmain's back streets.
Unfortunately, my dreams were put to rest. Whilst the coffee was pretty, it was the standard of coffee I've encountered at small-town stopover cafes - dull & bitter, it lacked the complexity I've come to expect from Sydney's Inner West cafes. Also, the menu appeared a bit pricey for a suburban corner shop cafe and failed to tempt me with anything.
Whilst I felt bad leaving my coffee still half full, I also felt cheated of my potentially beautiful dream. Ah well. I'll just have to find another cafe to crush on. read more
