Unfortunately, we had the worst night's sleep of our week long trip. I booked The Legacy Rose and Crown several months in advance of our trip, and when we checked in, we were told there was a party taking place that night. When we returned to our hotel after dinner and went up to our room, it seemed that we were located directly above the restaurant where the party was being held. Although the music was right in line with my tastes, we were really hoping for a good night's sleep since we had to be on the road at 7AM, but sleep wasn't to be had since the music continued until midnight. I pulled my ear plugs out of my bag and turned on a noise machine, but even that wasn't enough to block out the pounding bass. Honestly, the hotel should not have even rented room we were in on that date considering the noise below. If we had stayed at this hotel on a different night, I think our experience would have been much better - it's clean, pretty, and convenient to the cathedral and other sites. The staff was very friendly and gave us bagged lunches since we were checking out before breakfast. I wish I could leave a better review, but since the primary purpose of a hotel is to provide sleeping accommodations and we weren't able to get much sleep, two stars it is.

Unfortunately I did not know the hotel restaurant becomes a nightclub all night long. We were on the third floor and it was like I was standing in the middle of the club 4 floors below me. The sign in the hallway asking for quiet was the most ironic thing I have ever seen. Even after the music way after I was told it might stopped drunk patrons yelled as they steamed into the streets. I also enjoyed the convient parking 1/2 mile away at the shopping mall in town as the parking at the hotel is only for a select few. Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to stay.

Despite the freezing temperatures outside the hotel was warm and inviting. Large spacious rooms with full central heating, many with views over the city. Spotlessly clean. Our hosts were friendly and efficient and the breakfast was excellent and included croissants, fresh fruit salad, toast with various spreads available and of course full english cooked breakfast. More expensive than some in the area but otherwise hard to fault. Would happily return if visiting Bath again.

Big sign hangs above the door. Stayed three nights June 2018. Retains most of the original charm of the old building. Has modern conveniences but retains the feel of the Georgian period architecture. Located far enough up the hill to enjoy a modicum of peace and quiet from the crowds and noise of downtown. Yet it is just a 15 minute walk to the action by the river. You will get aerobic exercise walking back up the hill from the River Avon. Hosts do live on the property. They are delightful. Room furnishings are comfortable. Not precious or overly fancy. Bed is comfortable. Wi-fi works well. Plenty of hot water. En-suite shower big enough to wash without banging elbows on the walls. Good quality toiletries and towels provided. Breakfast is homemade. Not fancy, but plenty big enough to start the day with a full belly. Be aware if you have a car that finding a parking spot can be a nightmare. Bath is crowded, there is not enough car park spaces on the street for the population. Then there is the parking zone scheme which governs where you can legally park according to the parking permit that the Hill House guys will loan to you. If you break the parking rules out of frustration, a costly citation will be your reward. If I return to Bath, I would consider staying here again.

Built around a large, early 19th Century house, rooms in the old house have traditional decor (some with 4-poster beds) whereas most of the rooms (a mix of doubles and twins) are in a modern annex, and are laid out with standard modern hotel layouts. These have TV, bathrooms with baths and showers, tea/coffee making facilities and controllable heating and air-conditioning. The decor is a little dated but in good condition. Our room was clean, and had comfortable, if slightly springy, beds. The shower was excellent and there was always plenty of hot water. There's a restaurant and function room in the newer extension and a comfortable bar located in the original house. There's a small Spa suite, which we didn't use. But we had dinner as part of a group which was perfectly good; breakfast was a buffet, with a reasonable selection of cereals, strong coffee, and (for a buffet) a good quality cooked breakfast (excellent mushrooms and sunny-side fried eggs). Staff were very friendly and helpful. Overall, for the price, I'd happily stay here again. The only downsides were that the car park is small, and filled up quickly (a few of our party had to park off-site a short distance away); and although the WiFi speed was reasonable (35 Mbps), the signal kept dropping in and out in our room.

Our server, Luke, was ridiculously polite to the point where it almost made me feel awkward -- I wanted to tell him "lighten up, we're cool!" Decor is classy and attractive. They have a two-or three-course lunch special (I can't remember exactly what the price is, but it's a great deal). I had the calamari appetizer (delicious!) and the wild mushroom & tomato risotto for my entree....that shit was so good I could just stick it right in my butt. For the price, it's well worth it. My prejudice has been challenged by Castleton House and found wanting. Castleton House gets a 4 star rating from the AA and Enjoy England. It's a well deserved rating and one that is maintained consistently. On arrival we were warmly greeted by Gail Garbutt (the owner). A quick tour of the main areas followed, the dining room and roomy drawing room. Both were furnished in a solidly comfortable and tasteful way. Staying in a b&b can sometimes be challenging as other people's hygiene and taste may differ from one's own - not in this case. We were given a quick tour of our room - a spotless, twin bedded room with a large en-suite bathroom, fridge and tea and cofee-making facilities. Once we had the room to ourselves I checked under the beds for cleanliness - spotless. Ditto the bathroom in every conceivable nook and cranny - spotless again. The fridge was clean and stocked with a complementary bottle of wine and good local beer. The beds were made-up with crisp, clean linens and there was an additional stock, plus clean blankets and towels if we needed them. The next morning saw us treated to a (pre-ordered) breakfast of wonderful quality. Cooked breakfasts, continental breakfasts and special dishes like kippers, scrambled eggs or the like were proffered swiftly on good china. Much of the produce served at breakfast was locally sourced. The honey was not only delicious but gathered by Gail and her husband from their own hives (in case bees put you off visiting - these are 4 miles away!). Excellent tea and coffee was also on hand and topped up with minimum fuss. The whole experience was just lovely. Gail served us throughout our stay and was chatty, welcoming and helpful, but never intrusive. We really could not have asked for more. I thoroughly recommend Castleton House either for a short stay (perhaps a stop-off) or ideally, as a base for a few days walking or cycling in the surrounding countryside. Stourhead is not far away and there are many private estates nearby offering excellent walking, cycling and riding paths and facilities. Try it, you've nothing to lose and everything to enjoy.

If I had to imagine a bed and breakfast in the English country side, this would be it. The hotel is organized with a main house (living room, check in, dining room) and separate living quarters surrounding the house. My cousin booked two rooms for us and we had the entire second floor to a English country house all to ourselves. The name was really cute too. I think our rooms were called Chaucer and Shakespeare? Rooms were spacious. We had a comfortable bed, big bathroom. Tub and shower. We had free tea and coffee in the room and a small tv (w/ cable). The windows opened out (no screen) and we had a view of the green landscape surrounding the property. The room was also very well heated. Which was good, as the nights were quite chilly in September. We dined twice in the main house. Once for dinner and also for breakfast. Dinner was really good! Breakfast was good too. We could order a full English breakfast off the menu. And we also had unlimited fruit, cereal, breads and jams (LOVED fresh jam). I remember having smoked salmon w/ eggs, English toy soldiers, sausage and hot tea. So stuffed! The gardens surrounding the hotel are beautiful. Take a bit out of your day to stroll around. We found fruit trees, berry bushes and wild flowers. Very picturesque. Widbrook also has a heated pool. So take the opportunity to relax and take a dip! Parking is available on-site for your car. Very beautiful English bed and breakfast in the countryside. My stay was wonderful. =)
