I used this place for a while, joined the membership so I could purchase online and split cases, and thought it was okay; then a few months ago noticed a lot of the fresh produce had that "not-so-fresh" look about them,even some of the items I purchased via the website. Brown slime on the leafy greens and a few cliché-esque bad apples fed my skepticism, but I still persisted. Then I showed up one day without my OFD card and the manager (owner?) refused to give me the member cost even though I was in the system. "You have to have your card," he said, never making eye contact. Wow. For the 'green' lifestyle this place promotes, you'd think they'd be okay. My loyalty was now torn, because why patronize bad attitudes? Fueled by my previous encounters with poor produce, I've pretty much stopped visiting this place at all. I'd like to return; it's right on the way home from work and it saves the wife from needless trips to the store. But too many sour visits and surly 'tudes have made this place not worth the cost. read more

Love the concept of this place. The staff is hit or miss, either very helpful or not which does not bother me much. Nice selection of vegan options in store and the ability to place orders on-line and pick them up in store. The online option is nice but too much of a hassle for me so far to sign up. They should be able to set you up for online orders in the store. Decent amount of vegan products here. I purchase the vegan cheddar Teese, and whipped up some mac'n'teese that night (which I really liked). The product that I purchased from the store was reasonable in price. I like!! read more

Great indie grocery store & organic produce right in Ghent. They have bulk grains/nuts as well as a huge cooler with local organic produce. Lots of things for the vegetarian/conscious eater as well as a whole aisle of health/beauty products. Friendly staff. There are locations in Va. Beach, Hampton, Norfolk and Portsmouth. They have an online ordering system, will deliver your groceries if your order is more than $100, and you can order cases of more expensive things and split them with other "members". Not a bad place, but not super great either. Here is the deal, my family and I have a gluten allergy. We are able to get our favorite pizza here and that is about it. I like their local greens but most of their other produce is not worth it to buy. I don't come here for customer service, that is for sure. The manager is so aloof and seems like we are a huge inconvenience. Truth be told, Whole Foods carries our favorite pizza and I will stock up when I am in VAB, however OFD is just down the street from us I will go here in a pinch. read more

I've been frequenting this little gem tucked back in a corner off of Granby Street for about 10 years. They are awesome. For the past month I was on a quest to find heavy cream without carrageenan in it. Well, one of the perks of Organic Food Depot is being able to order these things direct from manufacturers and local farms and/or split cases of said items with others who are placing an order. Need vitamins? Gluten free? Vegan? Grassfed organic meat of any kind? I even found candy and chewing gum with xylitol instead of sucralose. For such a little place, they are the best!!!! read more

This is my favorite health food store. I love to be able to buy in bulk and pick up at the store. This is the only place that sells powdered coconut milk to blend into my coffee or make Golden Tea. I always check out the clearance rack and freezer for new products to buy. Today I found Paleo bread and gave it a try. And the pizza selection is always stocked with something good. The Organic Food Depot is incredibly overpriced. I feel sorry for the people in Norfolk who would like to shop organic, but only have this store as their saviour. I have lived off of locally owned organic food stores my entire life, and I have never come close to a store this overpriced. Never. This place is a life saver if you're looking for organic, vegan, gluten-free or allergy friendly groceries/supplies in the Hampton Roads area. The store itself is small but they pack a lot on there, try online for a MUCH larger selection that you can order and pick up. Cute little shop with some nice merchandise but not worth the drive from York County/NN area. This was one of the first places I had been to when I started to eat more "green" and was initially surprised by all the neat finds. However, after more research and traveling this place is just OK. I have to agree with Mike A. in regards to the produce section and the staff here. Considering it is a health shop you would think that the produce would be immaculate but its not. It's kept in a small unorganized and clutter walk-in fridge. I bought pickles from here once and didn't notice the mushiness until I got home...gross! Their frozen foods section is also subpar and many of the items are frozen solid. I do think that they can be a bit overpriced with a lot of their stuff and the last time I went I just walked out due to the high prices and staff. The guys ( it's always been guys when I've gone) don't even acknowledge your presence and don't say a word at check out. I hope this place could improve because I love the concept. I wouldn't even consider their membership based on my experiences. Oh, and the parking lot is horrible. It's small and uneven. read more

A hidden gem this one!! The staff was overly helpful and very nice (even though my toddler was being a nightmare). I knew exactly what I was looking for (and the only place in Norfolk that carries the vegan soy free yogurt) so it was in and out for me. But doing a quick walk around they have everything from food to health products. And if you sign up as a member online (free!!) you get discounts!! read more

Love this place- it's like a little mini Whole Foods near me, since I can't make it to the one in Virginia Beach. They have an awesome selection of vegan food, and some interesting items that even Whole Foods doesn't carry. The process are a little steep, even compared to Whole Foods. But for the most part everything isn't too expensive and it's a great place to stop for some specialty vegan and/or organic items that you can't find anywhere else nearby. I live close to here so it 's super convenient for me, so I do pop in quite a bit. The staff have been very friendly and helpful, which always makes shopping local that much better. I love the concept of the store but do find the prices hit or miss. Some items are well priced while others are insanely overpriced. While I do prefer to shop local, I can't justify buying something for twice the price as I can get the same thing online. The store is very tiny but holds quite a bit of selection. I do find it very tough to get around the store with my son in his stroller- especially getting into the refrigerated room. read more

I have shopped at The Organic Food Depot a few times, and found that service is lacking and knowledge of most staff ( lots of turnover) is low to none when it comes to understanding food. I found that the prices per product as compared to other local markets are high-simply stated: driving a little further to get service and the same exact products is still cost effective. For the most part, you can drive directly to the farmers market or go right to the numerous local Va Beach Farms and get a great selection, better prices and MUCH better service. As related to service, the manager is aloof, not knowedgable and seems to not care about her personnel. When I was last in the store, I did not want to talk to her as she always appears to generally 'care less' when it comes to customers. With that said, I asked for the owner regarding a specific product question. The owner, who is usually on site and in the warehouse stocking on line product orders- was actually worse than the manager. She came into the store from the warehouse wearing a frown ( I guess the gruff manager told her someone had a question), and she was terribly dry to me when I was speaking with her. My perception was that she felt that I should not be asking her any questions. The customers pay a hefty price for products that have indeed gone up in price over time, yet-the lack of service provides that I will not be back to this store. I will go to the Farmers Market, or direct to the farmer in Va Beach -as I know they are always VERY happy to see me. read more

I can't eat anything with milk or lactose in it and Farm Fresh used to sell soy yogurt, but for some reason stopped. I looked around and this seems to be the only place near me that sells soy yogurt and it also sells cheeses that I can have too! I was so excited to find this place. read more

I am now boycotting OFD after numerous bad customer service experiences. It's unfortunate because their prices on preorder bulk items are usually better than anywhere else. I don't recommend preordering produce because when I have much of it had to be thrown out. Bad customer service included being told they couldn't make change because we would use all of their small bills - they had 3 employees at the time, the store was dead, and there's a bank across the street. We were in a rush but ran to the bank and came back. Also there is no door stopper so pushing a loaded cart out the door is very tricky, and extremely annoying when there is a manager trying to hide five feet away rather than getting up to hold the door. I've had to maneuver around an employee to get my 25 lb bulk bag on the bottom shelf while carrying my baby on my back. I've had the only employee who was ever particularly nice act like he was doing something wrong and could get in trouble when he helped me bring my groceries to my car. The manager I give a giant thumbs down to. I appreciate that they have what they do have, as there aren't many health food stores around, but I don't plan on ever going back, after 5 years of crappy experiences. read more
