On Mother's Day my husband took me to the TLC on Memorial to select an orchid. I have 6 orchids in…read moremy home and know how to care of them. The orchid I chose at TLC had a couple of areas on the leaves that looked like cotton. I took it back to the information desk and the women wiped off the white area and told me it would be fine. My husband purchased the orchid for me for $60.00. Unfortunately, the white chalky substance kept coming back. I googled the information and found out it had mealybugs. I followed the directions to clean the area with alcohol. After trying to remove it for two months without success, I took the plant back to TLC today to ask for help. Paul, the manager was at the front door and told me to go to the middle of the store to talk to the woman at the information desk. She determined the mealybugs were in the potting media which is why I could not eliminate them with alcohol. She said she could repot the orchid but there would be a cost. Obviously, the potting media was infected when the orchid was purchased two months ago. I was insulted when told I would have to pay for the repotting process. I spoke with the manager, Paul, and he told me house plants do not have any type of warranty. I learned a lesson today. I will not buy house plants from TLC! I will buy them at a business that carries a warranty for a third of the cost! Susan M Reply to Frank on July 18 Frank, I would appreciate a retraction on your response. The orchid WAS purchased at TLC on May 6! The above story is accurate except for the amount spent ($50 instead of $60). I had not looked up the receipt before coming by TLC yesterday. The reference number on the receipt is 32073802. The total amount spent that day was $122.70. I have 6 very healthy orchids purchased at different locations. The white pot left with the orchid must have been switched while watering. The orchid purchased from Whole Foods is healthy and doing well. Actually, over the years I have never had a problem with an orchid being affected with mealybugs except for the orchid purchased at TLC. One statement you made is correct. This is the first review I have made on YELP because I wanted to let others know that customer service is questionable at your business. I understand policy is policy on the return of houseplants. I was not upset until being told there would be a charge to repot the plant. It didn't make sense for me as the customer, to pay to correct a problem that I wasn't responsible for. It would have cost very little for your employee to offer to repot the plant for free.

Although most places that do the work for you do charge a convenience fee--so no surprise there. Sometimes it's nice to pay a little more and have the plant project be done without running to several different stores (or getting your nails dirty). That's where The Plant Shoppe comes in. They do a good job of have varied price points--$10 & up. Looking for a gift...take a look here! Air plants, succulents, cacti, oh my! I do have a wish list. It includes a MUCH bigger card selection. This place has been on my radar for a while because of the succulents and as we walked by one evening (after closing time), we saw a huge and beautiful bird of paradise int he window. We went back to inquire. There was only one other person in the shop. We waited patiently until she left to inquire. We were simply told, "It's not for sale" and the clerk immediately went back to her phone. We did end up buying some totally overpriced cacti. I might be back. Work on friendliness though.

BAIT & SWITCH PRICING W/PICK UP: If you pick up soil or another product in bulk from the soil yard, the pricing online is incorrect and somewhat of a bait and switch. You are charged by the pick up load @ 2 cubic yard pricing, regardless how much you actually get. So bring as big a truck as you can. You will be given a "good size load for your truck" as the front desk person described. He said I would probably be able to fit around 1.5 yards of the 50/50 soil mix in my truck. Meaning, for my project needing 2.15 yrds, I would have to make 2 trips, pay for a 2 yrd load each time, and ultimately pay $166 to get what I need. While still much better of a deal than buying by the bag, it is likely less of a deal compared to similiar products at other soil companies. 2. Representatives were very friendly and helpful. The girl on the phone at the main office was very friendly and happily gave me directions and the front desk guy at the soil yard was very informative and helpful. 3. Soil is pulverized and at least in my newb-gardener view, at least appears to be very good quality. Very happy with it so far. 4. Directions on Google are wrong, don't follow them when they tell you to turn into the A&D Business Park. Instead, from Agnew, turn West on Exchange Ave (locsted S of the of the A&D Business Park). Then go thru the Stockard gate, pass the flag poles on the right, then turn right by the green Murphy Product sign which is a little before the railroad tracks. If you get into the actual stockyard itself, you've gone too far. Overall, aside from the specific truck you use when picking up, you will need to consider your max pick up amount each load, and what that pickup-by-the-load pricing will actually cost you for your project. I imagine you could call them to get an idea of what will fit in your general truck range. For me, at least prior to the actual gardening part, I will hesitate to go back when I need to get more soil to top off what fit in my truck and what was planned. The business decision makes me wonder whether they are losing repeat customers for pick up (even if that means the same project) due to the incorrect pricing online and the ambiguousness of how much you're actually getting. Maybe that's such a small portion of the business, it doesn't matter. However, unless the soil is considerably better than other soil companies nearby, or the others follow the same policy for pick up, then I will chose some place else that actually gives me the 2 yards I pay for.
