If you're looking for authentic Chinese food, this is not the place for you, and you should stop reading. Lee's Village is a westernized Chinese restaurant located near Downtown Steinbach. I recently did a trip there, and was invited to eat here for dinner with some friends (on their bill). Needless to say I accepted their offer. The inside is quite decent, it does have some resemblance of trying to be a Chinese restaurant. However, the servers are unsurprisingly not Asian...although the chef was, which was somewhat of a good sign. We had the special fried rice, sweet and sour veal, sweet and sour pork, shrimp with vegetables, chicken balls, beef with broccoli, BBQ pork chow mein, and ginger beef. The dishes definitely were not authentic Chinese cuisine, but it did its job in filling my stomach. For a place like this, there's not much I should complain in terms of quality standards, since it's probably the best that Steinbach can offer. Service was excellent despite our large table group. Personally, I wouldn't say no in returning if I'm ever back in Steinbach, even though I know there's the lack of authenticity here.

I went with two colleagues for lunch and was impressed on the whole, with two caveats. Like most restaurants in the West End, the prices are exceptionally reasonable. Dishes are almost all under $10. When we arrived on a very cold day, the restaurant was empty. We were immediately brought steaming hot cups of roasted rice tea. We placed our orders, and within 10 minutes we were brought a tray full of food, but not what we ordered. No, it was a selection of free appetizers. We each had a small serving of kimchee (good) and a 1/4 dollop of an excellent garlicky cold potato salad. Also, a plate of tempura battered onion strips with dipping sauce to share. Shortly after, our lunch dishes arrived. My dumpling soup had tender strips of pork and scrambled egg as well as pork and noodle filled dumplings. My colleagues' dishes were of saucy, thick udon-style noodles. All this for lunch and the total was $10/person including 20% tip. No, really. Now for the caveats: the place has a strange odor which I blame on what appears to be a commercial kimchee-maker in a corner of the dining room. It's a little off-putting to my nose, at least, which is not used to such aromas. Second, the place is not particularly vegetarian-friendly. The server, while friendly, did not have a high level of proficiency in English, which made it hard to negotiate which dishes had meat, which had "just a little bit" (or, as she put it in one case, "About 20%.") So I would not recommend the place for veggie folks. The decor is extremely Spartan. A hilariously kitschy touch, though, is a display case with what appears to be shellacked examples of some of the restaurant's dishes. Strange in a funny way. I'll be going back!

Also the Big flat TV is always on now. So I had good experiences with that place. Most of the dishes I took where very good (but their soup). Ok the place is very small but the food is cheap and the service, while a bit clumsy and not really professional, is very friendly.

Average sushi with typical pricing. A few items especially on the appetizer menu seemed a bit pricey to me. Service was a bit on the poor side... Not to say that she didn't try. A bit of a language barrier and inconsistency with knowledge of the menu and some of our requests. But hey, if you stick to mainly maki items during happy hour. There is money to be saved on a decent sushi meal. Plus you get to draw a coupon from a jar for a discount or free item. We ended up getting free dynamite roll on our next visit. That being said, I don't know if we'll be back there anytime too soon. There are enough sushi joints in the city that I haven't been to that I'd rather go try first.

The food is totally decent - not the best sushi I've ever had but quite good and enjoyable and they have a really good selection of maki sushi, including a lot of spicy rolls and rolls with mango, which I haven't seen any place else. Their rolls are tasty and a little on the small side compared to other places in town (though probably closer to the proper, traditional size of maki). I'd find them a little over priced for the size if I was paying full price (rolls start at $4.50 and go up to $14 or 15 for fancier stuff), but at 50% off I definitely feel like I'm getting my money's worth. We went tonight and got seven rolls (goma-ae, chopped scallop, Philladelphia, white spider, dynamite, rainbow and mini pizza - all delicious, though I'd probably skip the white spider next time as I'm not a fan of chili sauce), two miso soups and two teas and got out of there for under $40 including tax and tip. On my previous visit I also tried the crazy volcano and Macedonia roll. I haven't tried the appetizers here, as I've pretty much stuck to their happy hour offerings so far, though they look really good. Presentation is nice and I like the atmosphere of the place - it's cozy and plush and dimly lit, with a fireplace. The service was good - both times I've been we had the same server who is a really sweet and friendly lady who was fairly attentive. Overall I've been really satisfied with my visits to Ninki and I'll definitely be returning for their happy hour special in the future.

Which indicates to me that they are premade already, but I ended up getting them anyways. The menu indicates that it was in a soup, and I've never had chili oil wontons before in a soup. The wontons were okay, and to be honest, the chili itself wasn't that spicy, since it was mixed in with the soup. The knife-shaved noodles were an additional $1.99 for the slow-cooked spicy beef noodle soup ($8.99). The broth was super red, but don't let it fool you, because it really wasn't that spicy. I should warn you that if you plan on eating these noodles, do not come wearing white, because you'll get it splashed onto your nice white clothes. The knife-shaved noodles were nice and chewy, although somewhat thicker than I would have liked. The bits of beef cubes was really tender and flavourful. However, what I find lacking was the broth itself, which needed more seasoning. Would I order it again? Probably not. I didn't really find anything special about it, nor did it provide me with any wow factor. If you've never had knife-shaved noodles before and you like spicy things, then you could probably give it a try. You might like it, but it didn't really fit with my tastebuds.
