If you happens to be down near Dover and needing Asian grocery items, you may want to visit this place instead of driving up north to Newark area. It is located near the Dover Air Force base. It carries a good variety of sauces, produce, and frozen goods. It is very much limited by its shop floor space, certainly no fault of it's own. We were able to find most of the items we need in preparation for the Holidays. Pricing seems a tad higher than the larger stores in Newark. This is a Korean-owned Oriental grocery, the "Spanish" indicates that Philipino specialities are available there--and there are Vietnamese, Thai and some Indonesian, as well as Chinese, Korean and Japanese. Primarily, you will find Korean and Japanese products, however. As to Japanese foods, the selection has become limited, which I assume is due to controls over products leaving Japan due to potential radiation contamination. I used to buy a chazuke soup mix and it's no longer available, and I assume it's due to import restrictions. The same thing happened to Bovril, a British beef concentrate for bouillion, after the Mad Cow scare at the turn of the new millenium. You will find big bags of rice, mostly jasmine, short or medium grain, fresh specialized produce such as gingerroot, garlic (fresher than the grocery store), okra nearly all year around, daikon radish, sprouts. The daikon tends to be hotter in flavor than the milder Japanese variety I favor. Of COURSE there is kimchee. There is a refrigerator with miso and tofu (very good tofu) and a frozen section. There are also some kitchen items for cooking and on Fridays, you can buy a package of gimbap, freshly made. Gimbap is Korean sushi. It doesn't have raw fish, but instead has radish pickle (takuan), egg omelet, carrot, cucumber and a few other items (possibly fish cake or stewed kampyo gourd.) It's wrapped in nori like other sushi rolls and it's a great value at five bucks for a large pound that is an excellent lunch for two or three people. The owner is somewhat quiet and even seems unfriendly at times, but he's probably just shy, which is an issue if you are speaking English as a second language. I've shopped there for quite some years and he's a good guy and runs a very convenient and excellent store. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this place to anyone anymore. There has been a kitten, grown into a cat, which roams the store. I have seen the young lady making food in the back with this kitten by the bowl and other cats standing by the screen door. She has left the food uncovered and went to the register to make a sale - without washing her hands. Of course, the kitten had to take a taste - I mean, I think the kitten thought it was their food. The back room is dirty and the screen door is always ajar. Take a look the next time you are in there - it's dirty. If this was a restaurant, then they would be shut down. I don't know how they get away with having a cat in there while preparing food to sell. The back room is so dark and dingy, I don't know how they are allowed to continue to make food. If that was at any other real place, this place would be closed. It's a business - not their personal home. They store raw, head-on shrimp, uncovered with a pair of tongs laying atop of the shrimp - never on ice. This has been stored ABOVE vegetables and other items in the reach-in cooler. Sometimes it's below. I've asked them why they don't have it in their other food cooler, on the bottom shelf, on ice. They don't seem to care. Last year, I called the Health Department - the cat was not there and the shrimp was not there either - what a coincidence!! The young lady is very into K-Dramas and I have seen her make customers wait because she has been engrossed into her show. Don't they want to make the sale? Can't the K-Drama be paused to give good customer service? The man who works there is loud mouth and rude. He has laughed at customers in line on the items they are purchasing. What business it is his on what the customers are buying and why laugh at them? They are buying things at his store!! Isn't the point is have people make purchases here. There was a recall on the Korean Jin Ramen noodles. He was going to sell them, without knowing what the recall was. He laughed and laughed and said he didn't know why. Seriously? There's a recall on a product and you don't find out what it is and continue to sell the noodles. Sad. The owners need to realize you do not have to look Asian to understand the Korean language. There have been many times they have made fun of the customers and made rude remarks about them and me. I respond to them in Korean and there is always shock that I know the language. Don't put people down who are purchasing items in your store. I know exactly what you are saying and have no problem telling the person in front of me what you just said about them. People have been shocked - they thought they were being complimented. I have no problem telling them what I think, too. It's terrible. They treat the alcoholics coming in to buy 1 can of soda with more respect than others willing to spend $50 or more. Shame on them. I used to buy their kimbap, but have not in over 3 years. Let's be honest - it sits on the counter for how long???? Then the next day, you see the same kimbap - but it's fried. So the kimbap they didn't sell yesterday, which stayed on their counter, at room temperature or above, all day, is now being sold the next day - fried. YUCK. I am sure many people have had the bubble guts and never thought of the food they ate at your place. I have found hair in their jars of kimchi too - is it human hair or cat hair? I know I can't get sick from hair - but it is disgusting to find it in your food. Another thing they should research is the difference between the soybean sprout and the mung bean sprout. Please stop telling people the mung bean sprouts are soybean sprouts. They are not. They are different. You should know the difference. I know a lot of the Korean community in this area do not go to this place. They have questioned on why I still go there and warned me not to go, but it's the closest thing. My mom and her friends will never give them another dime because they think the store is dirty, why is there a cat eating in the back and at the counter and the customer service is poor. I'm taking my moms advice and the other Koreans in the community. I'll drive to Elsmere, DE and give my business to Young's Grocery Store. This place is clean, the owners give excellent customer service, and there are no animals wandering in their kitchen. Seafood is separate from their vegetables. If I can't find what I need in Elsmere, then I will take the road trip with my mom to an H Mart over an hour away. read more

Canned goods, big bags of rice, all kinds of noodles, frozen foods, fish sauce, curries, all kinds of sauces and stuff that will make tasteful buds in your mouth go, "WOW"! Everything Asian a big city market would have. This is a big plus for a small town like Dover. The store is located just north of the DAFB. I went there for some Kimchi. Was pleasantly surprised that all the Kimchi is homemade and they have plenty. The fresh produce choices are limited but adequate. Maybe in the summer there will be more. YAY! My first Yelp article. XD Anyway, I had to write this to somewhat update the review from two years ago. I was looking for a store that sold Korean/Asian food so I could start my own health diet. FOOD AVAILABILITY I don't know much about the food portion of the store. Even though my mother and I have been going for years, we've only bought stuff from there that we ate in our country "Jamaica". Ergo, I can only tell you what I know for sure they sell. Plantain Coconut milk Lychee Coconut water Jasmine Rice I don't know that much about Asian culture [steadily learning from those K-dramas lol] but as far as I can tell they have a variety of food that fulfill the curiosity of any Asian-buff. I have never experienced the moving around of products from one side of the store to the other to make it difficult for me to find my favorite ingredient - COUGH COUGH Walmart. CUSTOMER SERVICE I remember the man of whom Gwynedd [Lady who did the first article- follow her] spoke. I think it is just a cultural thing for him to behave that way until he gets to know you. My mom and I went there all the time, and after getting to know us, he warmed up to us and was the sweetest thing. He is retired now and I believe his children/grandchildren are managing the store. I come from a part of MD where there are a lot of Filipino stores so moving to Dover, I was hoping to find one. There aren't any, but this one is the closest to one there is. It does have a mixture of Asian and Spanish type foods and it seems to be run by some Japanese people. They watch my every move as if I'm going to steal the store. They have a few Filipino items to get me by until I am able to visit family in MD but they are very overpriced here. I am so glad that there is an Asian store in Dover. This place has good Shanghai dumplings, Korean beef, Filipino soup packets and snacks, longanisa, and condiments from all over Asia. There is also a small selection of fresh vegetables. Love this little market! She makes the best kimbop on Fridays! I'm like a little kid in a candy shop lol I always find the most amazing treats and awesome ingredients! I don't know how the department of Health is allowing this store to continue doing business. This store is so filthy and disgusting. As you park your car in front of the store, there's so much garbage such as empty soda bottles, napkins, cigarette butts, etc. and the owner said he does not care to clean because it's the landlord's job. He is so rude to customers and makes fun of them. He will make you wait to make a sale because he is engrossed in watching Korean series. Most of the items does not have any prices and you have no idea how much you are actually paying. The refrigerator and freezers are so disgustingly filthy and looks like the food are rotting away. I would not recommend this store to anyone especially when you see that the ceiling is showing signs of water leakage. I wouldn't be surprised if whatever liquid is coming out of it falls right onto the food. Who knows what is leaking up there but it does not matter because it is a health issue.
