We love stopping to play here if we are in the Deland area. Freedom Playground has plenty of parking, bathrooms, pavilions with picnic tables, and playground equipment that can be used by a wide range of ages and body abilities. I love that the park has one main entrance gate to keep kids contained and also has the little kid area separate from the big kid area. There are accessibility features like wheelchair accessible ramps for the playground equipment and a ground level merry-go-round. There's plenty of slides, climbing and obstacles, a zip line, pirate ships, pretend play houses, and all the features you would want in a playground. I love the nods to Florida with multiple gators throughout! Freedom Park is a Florida gem!

From what I've read online, DeLand faced the exact same issue that so many municipalities around…read morethe country have faced and continue to face regarding what to do with their playgrounds. At one point in time it was a thing to build these large destination playgrounds made out of wood. While a nice idea on paper, eventually the upkeep proves to be problematic and expensive. Eventually the municipality is faced with the hard choice of costly renovations that will need to be redone in the not too distant future, demolishing the structure or trying to replace it with something more modern/contemporary. Either way it equals a lot of money that usually is nowhere to be found. Thankfully a few years ago DeLand along with residents, area companies, school children and a newly formed non-profit committee figured out how to replace the original wooden structure. Amazingly over 300K in private donations were raised along with DeLand kicking in the rest and what you have today is an amazing structure/facility. In my own area there have a been a few success stories with places like this: www.savekidscastle.org/ But there have also been a few mismanaged disasters with places like this: articles.mcall.com/2004-11-19/news/3571642_1_playground-jungle-gym-time-capsule What works here: * Lots of parking * Solidly clean bathrooms * Lots of shaded areas * Super safe recycled rubber ground which means no tracking mulch into the car * A very needed water fountain * Lots of different structures/play areas/misters that offer a ton of diversity What doesn't work: * At least when we were here the zipline was in sad shape. It needs to be raised up or just gotten rid of it because it was way too low to be enjoyable. I don't want to lay on the hyperbole but honestly aside one other park (Kids Castle in Doylestown, PA) this place is the nicest that I've ever seen and even though my kids are arguably a bit on the too old side to be enjoying a place like this, they still did. Membership is $50 per month (called "plus") and includes visiting all YMCAs and includes all the classes and childcare at this Y. There is an economy membership that just includes the gym for $19 too I think. The pool here is always perfectly heated to 82F or higher and very clean and well maintained throughout the year. The child care space looks very nice and they have children's programs during school breaks and holidays in addition. To providing child care while parents work out. I have not used the totally new eGym but it looks nice and I have heard people like it. Also the spinning classes are fully subscribed and look to be a fantastic workout. The waterobics is notable for being 6 days per week. It's not overly difficult, more something for everyone. Swimming lessons are available. The pool is large with around 20 lanes for lap swimming plus an open area for other water exercise. The new Women's locker room is really nice. There are individual saunas. There is a centrifuge for drying your suit. There are lockers for day use. I think there are only 2 showers. The back section of the Y is still being renovated but the Men's locker room is still open. Everyone here is happy. You can tell they believe in the Y and they like being there and working there. It's a good positive experience to go.

First let me say how beautiful the new locker rooms are. There are some safety issues that need to…read morebe addressed. The floor of locker rooms is not sloped to the drains {not sure how that passed inspection from the city}. This causes a lot of standing water on the floor, which is a very slippery issue, and no grab bars in all showers. We lost at least 200+ sq ft and a crap load of privacy. When you enter locker room from pool area, and if you happen to be dressing needless to say not great. There are 3 changing rooms, but nice long wait after any of the morning pool classes. Going out the front door through lobby leaves water on the lobby floor. It's great that they put down non-skid mats in the lobby, but that is not a long-term solution. Having people who pay extra to use the pool should be able to use gate by the pool is a long-term solution. Here's the problem if you want to use gate, that costs extra. If you would like to use unmanned gate to pool area that, will cost you an extra $10.00 a month. If you want 24-hour access to gym that is an extra $30.00 a year. So why is one unmanned locking gate $120.00 a year for pool, and an unmanned 24-hour access locked door for the gym is $30.00 a year. That makes absolutely no sense. I guess common sense and safety ARE NOT a priority at the Ormond Beach YMCA.

There were signs around about panhandlers, but we were only approached by one couple. The funniest thing was walking on the pier and seeing everyone fishing. There was a small area between the restaurant and the fishing area that had signs posted to not fish there. There was at least 10 people fishing there. We also were able to watch a couple surfers, even though the waves were not big.

Gamble Rogers State Park is another gem in the crown that is Flagler Beach, Florida. My family and…read moreI finally had a chance to spend some time here today, and we really enjoyed it! The park is actually split in two - divided by picturesque Florida Highway A1A (a gem in itself). The ocean side has a honor system pay box where you deposit $5 for the day, and place a numbered stub on your dashboard. The Intracoastal side has a ranger station, staffed by very friendly and informative park rangers. We ended up picking up a yearly family pass for $120. This allows up to eight people to access any of Florida's 175 State Parks. Gamble Rogers is immaculately clean and well-maintained. The picnic areas on the Intracoastal side are particularly nice! The boat ramp and kayak launching areas are very nice as well. Bathrooms were impeccably tidy - something that's always appreciated! We spent some time walking on the Joe Kenner Nature trail, and saw lots of wildlife. There are many campsites here (on both sides). We did not check out these areas because the roads were marked "for registered campers only." My only disappointment was that the beachside public walkover to the beach itself was closed - presumably due to storm damage. Hopefully this gets opened soon, as the only was to access the Gamble Rogers SP Beach would be to utilize one of the several walkovers in the beachside campground (not sure if this is allowed - will ask next time I'm there). Can't wait to go back - a super-nice State Park that is only a few minutes from my home.

To my surprise capacity is not a large amount of people so it was very spacious and comfortable in the pools and sitting on the patio furniture. The daily admission is $3 for adults and $2 for persons 17 years old and younger. This includes access to the children beach pool/slide. They also have a lap pool with swimming lessons offered. This aquatic center is amazing because they have a section with beach entry great for kids. There are mushroom fountains and other fun features for all ages. Yes my fiancé even loved those fountains and reminded us of our childhood. My toddler absolutely loved it. They also have a slide which you can take your toddler on as long as you hold them. I also felt extremely safe because there were more than 3 lifeguards working. Everyone who worked here was very friendly and took their job seriously. I give this Center 10/5 stars!!
