We arrived at around 6:10, set didn't start around 6:30 and the place became very very crowded as the performance continued, to the point where from our positions at the bar we could no longer see the performers. Drinks are okay, my friend did also order the Espresso Martini which she remarked was very heavy on the Espresso as a heads up! Notes: The food served at the neighboring Cafe is entirely vegan. There is a discount to the cover charge if you are a student. We saw a few people bring their kids, so if you plan to do so come early to grab a seat. read more

This place is is really a gem of Bushwick. I'd heard about it for so long but never been. There was a cover at the time I went at 8pm but it's well worth it to support working musicians. The ambience is very relaxed, charming and inviting. There's also an upstairs covered outdoors area where you can have a smoke, socialize or place chess. Definitely a spot I'll return to. read more

Cool, crunchy-granola Brooklyn vibe here and eclectic bird-themed decor. There's an upstairs patio area and a lounge with some sofas. Spend some time really looking at all the art vs. just passing it by and admiring a piece. I went in the afternoon for a jam session and I didn't get the sense that anyone listening really knew jazz, but it was okay. There's a vegan chef that brings in food and you order separately from the bar at the end of the counter. I'm very tech savvy but I couldn't make their ordering app work, so I just skipped the food because I wasn't that hungry. I went there with my friends to enjoy the jazz music performance. They have two sides of the restaurant; the bar only side and bar & restaurant side. We were seated on bar & restaurant side with the live performance at 7:30pm. We ordered pesto pizza, hummus with pita and red wine. A refreshing change to the typical scene in Bushwick, visiting Ornithology Jazz Club or their sister location next door Cafe Ornithology is recommended. The place can get pretty tight, so it would be wise to come early, before the set starts, to claim a seat, especially if you want to be viewing the band head on and not from the side. They have a decent drink menu with some non-alcoholic options including tea. There is a $10 cover and they will charge tax/fee if you pay by card, but it gets you in the door and also to Cafe Ornithology, so be sure to ask for a "receipt" before you leave if you're planning on coming back or going next door. There is a fair amount of turnover between sets and performers. read more

Ornithology is an absolute gem in Bushwick! The charm of this place is out of this world. From the artsy signs inside and outside the venue, to the sweet decorations all around the cozy space, Ornithology is a must-visit. I really enjoyed sitting at the bar and just taking in the space while the Ai Murakami Trio filled the space with their electric tunes. The sound of drinks being made behind me, people quietly chatting, all mixed with the music just really made for a complete vibe. The old fashioned I had was very on point, and I'm super excited to try their food another time. I will say that the staff were incredibly chill at Ornithology, which made the space very welcoming. Cool hippy place which hosts some pretty amazing local musicians for various jazz nights. The four stars are for the overall decor and whoever's doing the bookings, because those two aspects are excellent. I do wish the layout made a little more sense - the restroom placement makes it so that if you're at one end of the bar, you have to struggle through the very narrow entire room watching a show to get to it. And drinks/service from the bartenders varied greatly on the night - i tend to order the same cocktail when I'm at a bar, and the three I had here tasted different each time. read more

Such a cute spot with great vibes. Came here on wednesday for a random comedy show and had a wonderful time!! There are 3 floors, one with the bar and live jazz music, a second floor where you can play chess, and a rooftop! The drinks here were delicious and beautiful! They also served vegan mexican food when I was here but i heard they sometimes rotate the chefs. I didn't try the food but I am excited to go back next time because it looked delicious! Overall, this spot is such a fun vibe. Reminds me of a Tomi Jazz bar but more home-y! Also really appreciated all the jazz music. When we first came in, there was a fun trip performing. Last night I had a great time in both Ornithology clubs and got to Jam with the musicians in both and touch the audiences with songs (especially with the song I've been working on "Time Flies When You're Having Fun":) making them happy and making me happy.... And the moment of reflection and joy I shared with the five young ladies who were there because one was the girlfriend of the drummer was priceless as they asked was I going to sing another tune and I told them it was up to the band leader, so the drummers girlfriend said I'll make sure I'm the drummer's girlfriend, not missing a beat after seeing how handsome the young man was I said damn girl you got a winner and her girlfriends all agreed with laughter as she blushed and said yeah! We just carried on with more laughter as they talked about my dancing during the interlude of the song and one told me she was a dancer and when I did the second song and picked another young lady out of the audience forgetting to ask her, boy did she let me know, as I explained I forgot and said she should have just stepped up and tap the other girl on the shoulder and said excuse me this is my dance! We laughed so hard. It was the band's last number and I appreciated Neal Caine (having seen him perform live in over a decade) so much for letting me sit or dance in with his trio who were superb. After having a great time there and vegan meal with the coffee I love so much I went up the block to the jam and had some more fun with the folks singing the same tune "Time Flies When You're Having Fun" by Smokey Robinson with the audience taking in those words and shaking their heads in agreement, followed at the end with heartfelt thank yous and congratulations... What an awesome Wednesday night in Brooklyn at both Ornithology I and II... Wow, I think I finally have been able to make Time Flies... my own, Neal had the same phrasing in his original music which made it just perfect.. I love this little tune and time spent! read more

I was car jacked by gunpoint in Chicago a few years ago . Needless to say I was traumatized. Since then I don't go out much but I'm starting to warm up to venturing off alone. I was on a layover in NYC and googled "vegan jazz club" and decided to take the subway for a sense of adventure. I wanted to free myself from fear. My experience from the time I walked into Ornithology was divine. I was greeted by the door guy who was cool. He said there were no seats available but was really nice about it and told me I can wait and he would look out to see when one became available. I was like ok- good looking out! So I walked over to the bar and told the bartender I wanted to order some food and she told me I couldn't order food unless I had a table not even to go. I could however sit outside and eat. I told her I would just stand and wait. Then she said hold on let me see what I can do...it was like her intuition kicked in, she knew I was meant to be there and before I knew it I had the best seat in the house! I ordered the hummus and crudités. Had a great time here on a Sunday night with my bf and his mom, who found the place. The space itself is pretty cool and the music is great. There is no cover and a small sign that says there is a one-drink minimum, though the policy doesn't seem to be enforced (and is more than reasonable!). We sat at the bar, facing the "stage." At one point, the wine in my wine glass was quite low and the bartender must have mistaken it for an abandoned almost-empty glass. I saw her take it out of the corner of my eye, and when I said something about how my wine wasn't done yet without blinking an eye she apologized and gave me a whole new pour. It wasn't necessary to give me a completely new glass of wine, but it was a nice gesture and made me happy. read more

Everywhere online states there's no entry fee we paid a fee at the door it was only $5 not a problem but they should have advertised it. Then every time a band would play someone would ask for tips which is really weird cause if your charging at the door and have a full running bar that money should go to the band. We already are tipping the bartenders for drinks.... No one carries cash anymore so what's the point of door fees??? As far as atmosphere it was a nice small tiny bar with an upstairs that had chess games that was lovely. I'm just giving this bar a one star cause the drinks were not strong at all I had a terrible old fashion when you order an old fashion you expect for that drink to be your last. They also didn't have wine bottle service. I've been to Philly, harlem anywhere were jazz music is number one and they never ever charge at the door and if they do it's cause it goes to band.
