I went to the Studio Ghibli Jazz w/ Alyssa Chetrick Quartet in February and the music was great but I have some words about the venue. I paid for two seats and it was soooooooooo close together with other tables. See attached pictures. I was basically shoulder to shoulder with the table next to me. The table in front of us was also super close too. We were seated next to the bar and it was so loud and it disrupted the music. The music sometimes had soft vocals and you would hear the bartender shaking drinks and scooping ice so loudly lol. It was mandatory two drinks per person so with the seat reservation, it was $140 for two people. Gratuity is also automatically included at 20% which is fine. For the seated ticketed event, I was expecting a nicer experience but it didn't deliver. I feel like I was overcharged for the experience. Also a bunch of people were standing by the bar talking and a whole bunch of people were standing behind us. I think for the price, it could have been better. read more

We came here on a Saturday night for the Lust Caution cabaret. We selected our table when we bought the tickets online. If you purchase a table, you are required to adhere to the 2 drink per person minimum. We had wine and the Son of a peach cocktail. We also had the rice crisps which were delicious! Service was attentive. Prices were standard for NYC. There's a coat check when you enter. The show itself was great. The hostess Madison Rose has an amazing voice!! I enjoyed seeing all of the different acts. Each performer was unique. The decor in the venue is stunning. The bathrooms are pretty but they only have two which leads to lines forming pretty quick. Cool spot with unique cocktails and a really great stage! Came here recently for what turned out to be quite a packed show and very glad I got a reservation for a table. The stage is impressive and some of the seating is more club like that concert space. The bar space didn't do great with overflow on a busy night, and I had a lot of peoples backsides rest on my back as I was sitting down, but I think that was more of the patrons unawareness than the clubs fault. The drinks are very good and I loved my purple negroni. Expect a 2 drink minimum! The aerial dancer was a very welcomed surprise! It was such a cool moment during a music concert, and it felt like this space can really accommodate so many different acts. Had such an amazing night at this place, glad I saw it on social media. I was planning a date night with my two friends in Brooklyn and thought this would be a the perfect addition to our night. We purchased general admission for about $38.18. With GA you stand by the bar for the show which was about one hour. We did get asked to upgrade to a table for about an extra $20 (with this you would also need to purchase 2 drinks minimum) but we declined. The show was amazing from start to finish with different performers. I love the aerial pieces that were done the most super mesmerizing. We also purchased a drink at the bar that was tasty. Conceptually super rad idea -- Chinatown neo noir speakeasy vibes that offers events that cater to pop culturistas. Everything looks super rad in photos but when you actually get there it's like, oh, no this is basically just a club. Which is fine! But makes me wish they got the lighting a little more dramatic to help maintain the vibe. I came here for their Tokyo Blade Runner night which was a lot of fun. The band is great and they played a much wider range of sci-fi movie music than I anticipated -- less moody and more nerdy, but in a good way. They cram a ton of tables together for the live music shows to the point that every time the guy in front of us tried to wrap his arm around his girlfriend next to him he'd bang our table. I also wasn't too impressed with the cocktails here, a little too bitter and rough for the prices. But I enjoyed the show a lot and had fun trekking out to see it so I'd definitely consider coming back for another live music event. read more

Nice place, have been here before for drag shows. I went tonight for their Shabari & Strings night. They have a nice stage. The tables and chairs were a bit cramped but it was very much like comedy seating with small chairs and small tables. But it was ok, just a bit hard to move around. The bathrooms are nice and clean. The vegan soy jerky is so good, I highly recommend it. I also wanted to try their scallion pancakes. The pancake was ok, but a bit small for the price. A waiter came by and constantly filled our waters and took great attention to take our orders. The place smelled nice of incense, and made the lights look cool with the smoke in the air. Came to watch a performance for the Studio Ghibli Jazz Night, it was well worth it! The venue opens between 5:30-5:40pm, asking guests to arrive by 6pm for a 6:15pm show. When I arrived on a chilly Saturday evening there was a short line outside as they were processing people inside. I'd read about the $3 cost check though given sub-freezing temps that night, seems they were a little more lax since people prob wanted to warm up after coming inside. Walking inside the venue gave off a cabaret meets old-Shanghai vibe with jewel-toned lighting, colored lanterns hanging from the ceiling and a stylized lacquered cabinet of curiosities as liquor shelving behind the bar. It's a somewhat odd-shaped room, almost like an isosceles triangle with the stage at the front being the narrowest angle. There are some more industrial looking buildings in the neighborhood and a garage next door, and turns out this space used to be a mechanic's shop too. The shape and spacing of the windows are reminiscent of garage doors though they're now hung with thick velvety curtains. Tickets to the show can be booked in advance online. They also have a two drink per person minimum. For drinks I tried the Moon, and the Sesame Colada $17 each. The latter was clean and refreshing with citrus notes, fragrant and fruity with a touch of lemongrass and the sweetness from the lychee. The sesame colada reminded me of eating pineapple cake with an added savory sesame element, pretty good. I got an onigiri to try which was kinda pricey at $8, which was tasty though nothing standout. Though I'm a fan of Ghibli animated movies, I admit I came mainly out of curiosity since the it felt like a novel experience not easily duplicated. There were definitely more hardcore animation fans there too. The musicians did a terrific job interpreting songs from Ponyo, Porco Rosso, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Kiki's Delivery Service, there was a mix of softer ballads and more energetic, vibrant tunes. It seems they switch up performers for this jazz series to keep the music styles and arrangements fresh. Each performer plays their own setlist of songs, and can also mix it up between different show dates. Like others have mentioned only 2 single gender neutral restrooms available. If you're driving it's pretty much only street parking in the neighborhood, alternatively the L is 1.5 blocks away. read more

The seats did not look worth it, especially with a 2 drink min per person. We arrived around 8:45 which was the perfect time bc if we came any later, we wouldn't have seen! I do think if we came earlier, we'd be able to see the stage. The show goes by so fast and each performance was beautiful! My partners and I went here for a Venus Cuffs burlesque event. The show was super fun and engaging. The space was intimate. The lighting was perfectly moody, and the sound was good. I disliked the seating arrangements. The person who welcomed us told us to sit anywhere. But then someone else told us we needed to move from the table we chose (a 2 top) to a larger table (a 4 top), where it was clear someone was already sitting. Thankfully the person there was very fun and we made friends. Also it was hard to get service to place our orders. And they have a 2 item minimum per person, on top of the entry fee. At least they had some non-alcoholic drink options I could choose from. But I would not recommend any of the food. read more

I almost don't want to spread the word about this fab little haunt and be selfish about it, but I love it so much I kinda need to shout it from the mountain tops. The aesthetic is art deco Asian brothel and, yes, it as sexy as it sounds. It is what happens when the cool, creative and camp collide. It has a sort of David Lynch feel with leopard carpet, fantastically moody lighting and red drapery in the back areas, except unlike Twin Peaks, Washington, everyone is super welcoming here. I never felt in a hurry to leave. It may be a bit out of your way but it is absolutely worth the trip. read more

Conceptually, this place is magnificent. An Asian neo-noir nightclub featuring API artists set to a backdrop straight out of a Wong Kar Wai film? I was immediately enamored. The place is indeed beautiful though smaller than I imagined. I've enjoyed cabaret and jazz performances in the evenings and have even attended book readings. Of note is an author event I attended featuring API authors like Stephanie Foo and Chanel Miller, moderated by Lucy Yu of Yu & Me books. With so many API writers in the audience this event was a dream come true for me, and I hope they continue to have programming like this. TRP also markets itself as a restaurant serving dim sum that is informed by Traditional Chinese Medicine. It's cute that they have a small pushcart to emulate the classic dim sum pushcart experience you'd get in Chinatown, but I think the meal experience falls short here. The menu of congee and dumplings was too light on flavor and really pricey. I understand not to compare these dishes to Cantonese dim sum but even as a separate category I would not say the food tasted very good. They seem to know this as it looks like they pivoted away from dim sum, and now serve a pared down Bar Snacks menu that includes onigiri, mixed nuts, and vegan soy jerky. I'd stick to the cocktails. The team behind the venue seem really nice and well connected in the nightlife scene. I like seeing baijiu on their drinks menu, a nod to the Baijiu burlesque bar one of the owners once opened on the LES in 2015 called Lumos. I still remember the show I watched there, and nearly a decade later, in a more progressive era where NYers are more ready for baijiu and burlesque, I hope The Red Pavilion finally finds its audience. read more

The Moon cocktail was definitely a standout to me; it was smooth and my group passed it around for sips. I came here for an event with some friends, and it was a little too loud of conversation here. I'm not sure what it's like here typically, but it felt like most people came for the performances. Came to the Red Pavilion on a Saturday night for the first time and was excited to see what was up since I'd heard about this a bit. Right off the bat, we weren't too impressed by how things are handled here. They require coat check, so it took 30 minutes waiting outside even though we already had tickets to line up and sign in and check our coats. Coat check is 3$ fyi and they use Venmo so be prepared or bring cash! Once in, they ran out of the high tables seats we had paid for and put us on a lower table. Now keep in mind, we're a bit short so it was tricky at times to see what was happening. The drinks were good. I had the Sesame Colada and that was very good. It's creamy from the sesame paste. I learned when I entered it was an asian woman owned establishment, which was awesome, and I noticed a lot of nice touches in the decor and menu. The performances were good as well, but I was expecting it to be more sultry and have a consistent flow and it was more talent show/act like rather, like a circus. The performers only had a small stage to work with, so it would've been nicer to have a larger stage for performers like Gallexxi to move around on. At the end, since we were the last showing, they turned the space into dance floor and really rushed us out of our seats, so we didn't quite appreciate that. TLDR: fun, asian owned space with lots of influence, nice cocktails, and talented performers, but the service and space itself could be enhanced for a better feel. read more

Celebrated a birthday here, and it was such a chill evening. I love how spacious the venue is, and how friendly not only the staff are, but even the musicians. Had the pleasure of listening to Cat Bus Collective when we were there, who did covers of Studio Ghibli movies as well as songs from popular animes. The cocktails are great, but the only piece of feedback that I would have is to expand their food menu. We loved the onigiri especially, and we would have loved to see more hot food options, like fries. I would absolutely recommend coming here and checking this venue out! We reserved a table, but there is general admission, which is standing room only. Although... Came here on a Thursnday night for their 6pm Ghibli jazz and anime theme night. We heard great things about this place and decided to check it out. The first thing to note is that you'll probably end up waiting in line to get in even if you have tickets. Not sure why this is but it was a little off putting getting there at exactly 6pm and waiting outside in the cold for 30 mins on the line before finally getting inside. The performers and service there is great. The area inside is surprisingly super small and the prices for the small bites/appetizers is a little ridiculous. Definitely recommend eating before coming here. I think the venue is incredible for a show, every spot regardless of standing or sitting you can see the stage and the sound is great. The drinks are delicious and if you're seated you must order a drink. I'm not sure how this venue fairs as a club venue thought, it's fairly small so I can't imagine what the space looks like filled with belligerent people. Fun spot to watch a show. Came on a Saturday night and there was a pretty lengthy line, luckily we already had tickets! The venue is easy to get from the subway. Our tickets included seats at a table and I will admit $30+tax+processing fee for a ticket to a themed jazz night is a bit steep. The standing tickets were only $10, but you're stuck standing by the bar or door. There's also a 1 drink (~$17) minimum at the table as well. The cocktails were fine, some interesting ingredients, but I wouldn't go specifically for them. Would definitely pass on food - $8 for only one (yummy!) curry puff. We also got an onigiri, and there weren't many flavor options. The seats are very close to each other, and for the performance that we went to, there was a lot of smoke from the stage that seeped into the seating area. I'll have to update my review for an actual dim sum day or try to get into their fancy events on their Instagram like eating sushi off of naked women or a burlesque show. We came for an Asian themed Jazz show with many songs coming from anime or Japanese cartoons. I only recognized half the songs, but they had a great energy and sounded great live. They really went all out with the special effects here. All the lighting and smoke machines going ham really make the event surreal. The venue is actually kind of small and inside a portion of what probably was some old warehouse. We got seated in a booth near the stage, which was kind of awkward to look backwards from certain angles. The drinks are pretty creative, and some of them are too ham. Like I saw a pitcher of baijiu for several hundred dollars. I'd be wrecked with that. Ended up getting the red dragon drink for the mahjong memes. It wasn't anything special like you'd get from a speakeasy like double chicken please, but it served its purpose. Had a somewhat fruit punch flavor with some herbal spicy salt on the rim. I saw some people get onigiris as snacks but they looked pretty expensive. I guess I was spoiled from the 7/11s in Hawaii and Japan to think onigiri rice balls should be over $2. The servers are super attentive and refill water every 1 minute, but the downside is that this will make you pee. There's only 2 gender neutral bathrooms, so good luck getting in there during the short intermissions. read more

I loved my evening at The Red Pavilion! I came for one of their Ghibli Jazz nights on a vocalist night. It featured the jazz band and three vocalists. I loved their energy and they seemed like they were having a lot of fun grooving on stage. They let you in at the time listed on the ticket, and they provide complimentary coat check. The venue is much smaller and intimate than what I expected, so don't feel the need to get a table too close to the stage. I got two of the Purple Negronis which were on the stronger side. Much more jazz than burlesque but the jazz was phenomenal... the atmosphere they cultivate is intoxicating and vivacious and energetic and truly immersive. Be ready to spend a lot when you come on a Friday night, drinks and food are costly plus mandatory coat check. Overall a great venue, easy access, seems good for people with mobility needs (walker, cane) and gender neutral bathrooms are a great touch. No stairs to get into the venue and wide open flat spaces. Hard to navigate on a bump'n night so be comfortable being crowded. Awesome to visit if you wanna dress up fancy too! Great vibe. And really diverse events/programming. read more

I've come here on a night out (DJ played hit after hit) but I felt I had to leave a review after recently going to one of their Studio Ghibli Anime Jazz nights. The inside of the cabaret is dimly lit with gorgeous lights that resemble a 1950s Shanghai style. Not only was the band (Cat Bus Collective) stellar at every instrument but they created such beautiful jazz arrangements AND there were also stunning hoop and silks dancers performing simultaneously (in the cutest anime costumes too). If you are into Asian culture, an anime or jazz lover, or simply trying to plan a romantic or fun evening, come to Red Pavillion.
