I absolutely love the historic and nostalgic beauty that lies outside and within the walls of the Orpheum! No matter where you sit, you have an impeccable view of the stage. It feels so small and cozy without feeling crowded or stuffy. Drink prices are typical concert/fair prices. Several bars to choose from. Only downfall is restrooms are downstairs.

We unexpectedly got to see Alex Warren at The Orpheum Theatre while visiting Madison, WI in October and it was absolutely incredible! The venue has a vintage charm with an intimate close feel! Alex's vocals were raw and powerful, and his storytelling had the crowd completely locked in. The Orpheum's staff were kind and organized, and the sound was crystal clear from start to finish. A perfect match between artist and venue unforgettable show - made our trip!

Somehow I had never been to a concert here despite four years in college in Madison. We relocated here right before Covid and that kept us out of this place. So it was a bit of a revelation to finally enter a building I have walked by hundreds of times over the decades. I was surprised at the ornate detail that has survived. Sure there is peeling paint and obvious spots where plaster is failing but the place is beautiful. Despite having seats in the upper reaches of the upper balcony the sight lines to the stage were quite good. It felt somewhat intimate for its size. The acoustics were decent but not great. The staff was friendly and helpful. The AC on this hot night was almost too cool but really I am not complaining. I would definitely attend a show here again. With some renovations of the tired parts this place would be five stars.

Madison has great theaters! This one is historic and beautiful. Our seats for the show got moved due to tech issues. We were moved to 2nd row, which were padded folding chairs. It's a close fit since the chairs are all connected but we loved being so close to our show. Air conditioning was on full blast and I wished for oants instead of my shorts. Bathrooms are downstairs and up stairs.

Madison has lots of great music venues but The Orpheum is still a classic fav. Saw a great show with Brian Setzer. Nice that you can bring drinks into the venue. Bar service was good. Ladies bathrooms are small and lines can be long! Definitely a good venue for the right show.

You know you're old when you get excited that a concert venue has seats. That's right you heard me, you can have a place to sit during your concert! General admission is usually $25 plus taxes and fees. The beer selections are $7-9 for 16 oz tall boys. They also had regular 12 oz beer on social for $5. They sell snacks too, popcorn, pizza, and chips which is convenient. Oh and they accept credit cards. The bathrooms are clean and in impressive shape considering how old this venue is.

My second time at the Orpheum and overall I have had good experiences. I have only been here for music concerts. The outside/inside is pretty classy/they are known for their big sign on the front state street entrance. Once inside, security is very thorough- but I would rather have them more thorough that not! There are many bars on different levels. Alcohol is pricey, but no more pricey then any other type of venue. They will usually fill up your water bottle for free after you purchase the first bottle. The inside is pretty neat from the old chandeliers and curtains- very old school and vintage looking. The music was loud and the video on the projector screen during the concert was clear/easy to see. The general admission is usually set up so that there is a large open area in front of the stage for standing. There are plenty of seats in the back or in the balcony to sit if you would like. The hallways to exit are pretty narrow, which can get to be pretty loud/hot/packed as everyone is trying to exit, but it is usually is pretty quick to leave. There is a merchandise table usually up front, and there is a coat check as well.

A performance arts Mecca and a theatre worth having the community behind them. Once Covid clears, I'll be one of the first reserved to see the rally of productions

Yeah. Orpheum night out. Thanks to the stranger who gave us free tics

Got free tics while walking down state street on st. Paddys day for a band called "walk off the earth". I believe thats kyrie Irvings favorite band (he thinks the earth is flat). I digress. Place is old and kinda run down. Band was ok. Free made them even better. Wouldn't pay top dollar to see a band here but im spoiled living in the 414 with all the amazing venues but hey, free is free so its all good Orpheum

Executive Summary: good venue for music/performances downtown. Alcohol available on site. Restrooms are tucked away in the basement and are on the small side but are clean and in decent repair. As with everywhere downtown, plan to park in a nearby ramp and walk to the venue. I visited the Orpheum for the first time in February for the Postmodern Juke Box show. Great show, good venue. We were on the lower level towards the back. Visibility was good from our seats. Acoustics were good as well. For an older venue accessibility to these seats was decent. One of our group members walks with a cane and she was able to navigate the main aisles just fine. The stairs to the upper level and down to the lower level restrooms are more of a challenge. I didn't notice if they had elevator access for those with limited mobility. Something I'll watch for next time. Although given the historic age of the building I wouldn't be surprised if such services are not available. I did not partake of a beverage but they had a main bar as you walk in the entrance and two side bars inside the actual auditorium on ground level. I didn't explore the upper levels so not sure what beverage opportunities exist above ground floor. Seems like drinks were mostly in the $10 and up range. A bit pricey maybe but you're paying for the convenience of a bar at a theater/performance venue so not unexpected. Restrooms are located downstairs and are a little tight, as I would expect in a building this age. They were clean and in decent repair though so they're doing the best they can.

In short: Forward Theater Company presents professional, modern, progressive plays, and IT IS AWESOME! I first became aware of Forward because my roommate was their technical director. He invited me to see the play he had been working on and gave me a ticket that had been reserved for him. I love theater so I was excited to go, but had only ever really seen productions I was already familiar with (Shakespeare, Broadway stuff etc). I went in with a open mind, but wasn't totally sure what to expect. The first play I saw was From Up Here by Liz Flahive, which is partially set in a modern day high school (so it included some amateur actors as well as professional). I was BLOWN AWAY. Literally moved to tears. The set, sound, actors, script, we're all amazing. Despite the fact that I had been given a free ticket, I paid for a ticket to see that show again. I've made it a point to see every Forward show since and have never been disappointed. With modern themes (sometimes slightly provocative) I find the plays to be extremely engaging. So, I implore you -- Go see a show! You won't regret it.

The Barrymore has had a history as diverse as the current entertainment on its schedule. It is an independent, community-based theater, owned by a nonprofit corporation. These are dying in America, so let's support the one we got. There is something here for everyone at least once a year! Not a big picture taking gal so no evidence to support this claim but I'd venture to say nothing about the theatre appearance has changed in my time. Who knows when it last did. And that's what you need to know so you are coming with right expectations and not "corporate" ones. This is a no frills joint, an old school theatre where your focus is on the entertainment. I get my pre-show chow down the block and simply enjoy amazing acoustics for all of the live music I have witnessed at The Barrymore. This setting does really well to beautifully showcase a man and his guitar. We will see how it does next month with a man and his guitar and a piano! Truly we should be thankful to share an intimate room with some of the best musicians of our generation. We need The Barrymore for hosting them and to continue to make the sound superb. The venue hosts a variety of entertainment too, which I appreciate though it's all live music for me. It's worth looking at their schedule to find something to attend if you are in town for a long weekend or more. Visitors should stop here for a Madison experience. There are Barrymore ticket sellers around town so if you want to buy a physical ticket in your neighborhood, you can do that. Huge plus.

I got to see the Static-X/Sevendust/Dope show, and fortunate to enjoy it from one of the few suites (far from the mosh pit!) that line the perimeter of the viewing area. The location: If you love downtown, this is a great location. If you fear downtown Madison, well, sorry. The good news is you can find decent (or free) parking nearby without getting lost in the mess of one way streets and chaos. The better news is that there's no shortage of places for your "pregame" efforts, whether you are looking for dinner or just a cocktail. The venue: The Sylvee is clean and tidy. You can tell it was built for the best concert-going experience. Plenty of room to move about, good bathroom situation, and numerous places to find a beverage. Up by the suites? Even better, with a special bar and bathroom situation just for them. And the bars have a great selection of craft/local beers. Overall the technology in the venue is great. The sound is excellent, and the lighting is on point. I know a lot has to do with the act that is in town, but Sylvee seems to have what they need to put on a good show. Now, you won't find Aerosmith or KISS coming by to do a show here, but you can find some pretty sizable acts performing here. If you find a show in town that really trips your trigger - and it's at The Sylvee... book it! You won't be sorry.

So it was this weekend when we saw their production of "Blackbird" by David Harrower. With one act, one set, and two players throughout most of the play, Blackbird begins as a young woman comes to a late middle-aged man's workplace to confront him about their past relationship. We immediately see his discomfort and resistance, and through halting and intense dialog eventually find the nature of the beginning of their relationship, she at a per-pubescent 12 years and he a 40 year old neighbor. When she asks, "Did you abuse me?" the word "abuse" is nearly stifled as though it were someone else's descriptive, not hers. This is how the play unfolds with accusations met with explanations trying to disentangle what their lives were then and have become now. The set complements the messages, with the company's rules and policy tacked to a bulletin board, lockers to hold personal belongings, and garbage and used empty containers all around. It makes for a great metaphor for society's laws and taboos, the places where you hide away our personal "belongings," and the garbage and used, empty containers we produce and become. The garbage is everywhere and is slung both literally and metaphorically during the production. As Ray, Mark Snowden leaves us suspending our judgement, holding our breath, horrified at times, and wishing to be sympathetic at times. Ultimately, as new missing pieces are revealed, we are left not trusting whether there has been any real change in him. Una, played by Jocelyn Fitz-Gibbon, dusts every corner of the subject. What happens if a young person discovering their sexuality is not surrounded by responsible, emotionally mature adults? A child perceiving abuse as love and adventure, the revelation and perspective gained with age, and the questions and wonder about the nature of that relationship come out in painful, uncomfortable scenes. Una amazes and confounds us fluctuating between a spurned and jealous ex-lover and an abused and cautious past victim. Harrower illustrates the psychological damage of abuse in developmental stages of life, and the challenges to the victim's relationships with family, friends, and lovers. I cannot reveal the role of the other player in the show, spoilers. But all three gave breathtaking and breath-holding performances. The scene can and has happened everywhere, quietly or publicly, making the "anywhere" location of the show appropriate as we examine why these codes and taboos are in place and what happens in our lives and futures when they are broken. Thank you, Bricks, for another searching and thoughtful experience in theatre.

The space is two cars, with one set up as a full-time bar, and the other a mixed space that was a dance club on the night we visited. The car is set up with a single person bar towards the back, and lounge seating along one side leaving small space for folks to walk and wait for the bar. The other car had the bar up front and the dance floor and seating in the back. This car had a cover, so we just did cocktails and lounged a bit in the bar car. The single bartender, while he was friendly and made a good cocktail, created a backlog of folks waiting for drinks. We waited 10 minutes in a single file line for our cocktails. I went with the espresso martini, and my pal got an old fashioned. Both tasty, but the glassware was wayyyyy too small. The line never cleared, so we did one and done unfortunately. The concept is great, but execution is lacking. I know there is limited space, but the current layout and function is not the greatest, especially on the cocktail car side of things.
