Tyler Anderson, PA-C is an exceptional provider. During my visit he was able to identify a very specific spot in my ankle that has been causing significant pain. When he examined that area, it was extremely sensitive, but he immediately understood what was happening and knew exactly how to treat it. After the injection he performed, I walked out of the office without the limp I came in with. For the first time in a very long time, I experienced what it felt like to walk normally again. That moment meant so much to me because it reminded me what my body is capable of when the problem area is treated correctly. I'm not sure why the bad reviews, because every time I've been in here they have been nice, timely, helpful, and the lady who crochets and checks out is so kind. I broke my heel in May 2025 and worked with Dr Shawen, I couldn't be happier with the outcome and his work. His words since have been "textbook recovery" for the fusing of my calcaneus back together and I am thankful I underwent the surgery with him (I considered not doing it and allowing it to heal on its own.) This practice allowed me to make an appointment for pain management with my prosthetic, but failed to mention after traveling from out of state and all expenses related, they don't treat lower limb loss pain management. Then proceeded to tell me to add Tylenol to my daily regiment of Advil and or opioid. Wasted my time and money!!! Also 35 months late getting me to be seen and not friendly to top it off read more

Good clinic overall - very efficient and quick to get me in. No wait too. The issue I had was they were almost so efficient that I didn't even have time to ask questions. My doctor was in and out in a matter of minutes and I didn't know who to talk to about next steps, what to expect, etc. The cast guy was amazing! read more

I had the absolute WORST doctor there (although highly regarded with high accolades because he is charismatic, went to great school, has high honors and definitely knew his stuff and could talk about it like he could perform it, but couldn't execute to save his life...or for the well-being of his patients) AND I've had the BEST doctor there (who could articulate and perform...the best of both worlds, cha-ching - and the PA was the same exact way and ran every test possible to make sure everything from A to Z was covered) - so I can tell you a thing or two about hips/knees and the doctor's who work on them through OrthoCarolina! I'm also a nurse so I can give a professional prospective too. I just had my 10th surgery through OrthoCarolina (the main 2001 Vail Ave location attached to CMC Mercy, the Hip & Knee Center), however, this was my 1st with my new team of professionals Dr. Masonis and Andrew Patterson, PA-C. I switched to a 2nd opinion from my old team because I'm only 27 years old and I had way too many issues from my prior surgeries for it to be "coincidence" or a one-time bad thing. I full-heartedly think Dr. Masonis is an amazing surgeon and his team is meticulous. He is thorough, tactful, skillful, and completely analyzes the condition of each patient's need. He took my case, a rather complex one, and Andrew (his PA-C) had ran every scan and test in the book before I ever met him and we had a great game plan upon meeting him. Surgery went beautifully and though painful, this has been the least painful and easiest recovery I've had in my life and I am so happy I didn't settle and refused to settle for "the other guy" who sits beside him at the clinic. But after countless issues and a decade on chronic pain management and having to change careers and change my life plan because of the surgical choices "the other guy" made, I feel I'm close to getting my old life back and I feel like I'm owed that...I shouldn't have had to give my life away at 14 years old because I was born with hip dysplasia. This was my 3rd hip replacement in a DECADE on the SAME hip if that says anything and parts of each of the first two were recalled and I was NEVER NOTIFIED of any recall by the first original surgeon of the original two hips....just goes to show you. I've found that out on my own research. So, bottom line, I feel like I could float on air thanks to the Masonis team and I plan on fixing all my current hip/knee ailments with his team and getting my life back in the order it should be. It's so heartbreaking how much a botched surgery from a medical "professional" who doesn't take responsibility can really take away from your being and make you feel incapable of being your best possible self. But I feel ready to get back to being me and I'm already on that journey and I'm feeling better already. My first surgery with Dr. Masonis for my 3rd hip replacement was one week ago and this has easily been the easiest recovery I've ever had (still very painful and difficult, but competitively, it's a breeze). I can't wait to see how I'm doing by the New Year and what lies beyond that. Fingers crossed! Met with Dr. Eric Laxer who was referred to me from another of their practices which I asked if they had anyone for a second opinion to evaluate mri etc. I feel he was very thorough and talked not only in medical terms but also as a layman's terms. Also since I just transitioned here from NY, I have had ha hard time finding a GP that I could be satisfied with. He gave me a name of a practice to try if I want. Which I plan on trying. Only think I find with many medical practices in the Carolinas, they do not have Saturday or Sunday hours to be seen and most offices close early without any late hours, thus making it hard to see a doctor during the workday. read more

Took a child to OrthoCarolina following fracture, and the surgical outcome seems poor, changing how certain things are done and changing sports played. If going back in time was possible, I'd review medical records for errors, omissions and problems after every visit. I'd make sure that my child saw a specialist (a Dr. with certified extra training in a particular specific area) from the get-go. I'd probably take my child to Wake Forest, UNC or Duke if an ortho pediatric specialist wasn't available at OrthoCarolina. Physician assistants (PAs) seem best to see AFTER a Dr. makes an initial diagnosis. Since our child's OrthoCarolina experience, I speak at national and state healthcare events as a patient advocate and volunteer with families who experience preventable adverse events. Facebook groups like Medical Error Transparency Plan, Patient Safety Action Network, Mothers Against Medical Errors and family doctors, pediatricians and independent physical therapists may provide guidance in tough situations. I felt rushed the entire time I was there!! I couldn't finish the ipad check in and then they rushed me out of the room cause they were behind. The doctor was very heavy handed when touching my injury and I kinda want a second opinion. I don't feel that my care needs were met. I feel they just shoved me out the door. I felt very much looked over and not listened too. They just looked at a old x ray and said this is what it is, put me in a boot and rushed me out the door. Wouldn't even explain to me how to walk in it or what exercises to do, just said oh there's pictures on this paper were giving you. I feel they should of done another x ray just to make sure something else didn't show up after a few days.... I would of just like to feel more taken care of! read more

My experience with OrthoCarolina has been beyond useless, expensive and frustrating. I started at the hip center who saw no issue but after I followed up with continued discomfort I was referred to a PA at the Spine Center. The PA set me up with physical therapy at the rehab for spine patients which only made my leg pain unbearable. The PA then wanted to do a MRI of my lumbar spine but when I complained and said I firmly believe that it was not my lumbar spine he decided that it was bursitis and gave me an injection. When the leg pain continued, I asked to see an actual Doctor. He was kind and agreed it probably wasn't my spine but ordered an MRI. $700 out of pocket later, he then referred me to the Sports Center for my hip! At the Sports Center I was given yet another injection in a different area, told I never had bursitis and sent me on my way. A month later when I asked if the warm sensation still in my leg was a side effect of the injection I was simply told to go see the physiatrist at the spine center! Nonetheless.... I'm done. I went to a chiropractor and a within one week feel almost back to normal. Significant waste of time and money at OrthoCarolina. read more
