Before they ever even ask what ails you, the only thing that was emphasized was that the therapist I was referred to see is too good for my insurance, so I'll have to see whoever is lowest on their price list, and that I must pay my deductibles upfront, which I refused, as I worked in a doctor's office and knew that's not right. I can't believe I went against my instinct and actually gave them a try. Sent me 1 bill for the 1 visit, followed by a threatening phone call that if it's not paid, they'll start collection's procedure. Only in retrospect do I realize how horrible this therapy was. I have severe spinal stenosis. When I was in a great deal of pain, I stupidly continued therapy with this place for about 3 mos. I believed the therapist who kept telling me to continue though I found the therapy painful. I finally had a steroid shot which I should have gotten from the beginning! I owe my healthy shoulder to Stroma PT. I came in with a badly dislocated left shoulder and Vinita assured me I'd be back to rock climbing in no time. With her recommendation, I had necessary surgery from an incredible surgeon who she put me in touch with. I've been to a number of physical therapists over the years and can only wish they had all been as attentive, hands-on and effective as Stroma PT. I went in with a pressed nerve issue that was causing weakness and pain in my right leg. The head of the practice, Vinita, spent numerous sessions not only fixing the immediate problem with extensive massage and ultrasound, but also analyzed my stride and underlying arthritic condition to come up with a series of exercises to keep the condition from returning. Vinita is conscientious and knowledgable, and I can't recommend her practice enthusiastically enough. read more

Hands down the worst experience I've ever had with any doctor. This practice claims to care about their patients and give attentive service but unfortunately this is NOT my experience. I booked an appointment on ZocDoc for a same day service, someone from the Stroma office called to confirm my insurance information and tell me that they do not take my insurance (or any insurance for that matter, despite their ZocDoc page registering all insurance as in-network but that's a different issue). I told the woman I would need to think about it and she told me to cancel on ZocDoc if I didn't want to keep the appointment. I looked around but decided to keep the appointment (I never canceled it on ZocDoc) a little over an hour before my appointment I called and confirmed if I was still set with my appointment time. The receptionist confirmed that I was set, told me my name and appointment time. I took the day off work because my knee was killing me but I traveled an hour from Queens to their office. When I get their the receptionist doesn't really greet me and asks if I have an appointment. I told her I spoke with someone from the office twice and confirmed right before getting here. She tells me to take a seat and after five minutes calls me up to the desk and hands me the phone - doesn't explain anything to me, just hands me a phone. The woman I spoke to earlier about the insurance is on the line and starts to tell me that they can't see me. I have no idea how they can tout their attention to patients/ level of service they offer when handling basic appointments seems to throw them through a loop. From personal experience, I can tell you they don't care about your time or your well being. Completely lost my trust. There's no way I'm going out of my way again with my bum knee just to no get service that I would have to pay 100% out of pocket/out-of-network rate. Would recommend you spend an extra time and find another physical therapist who will respect your time and care about your well being. I went to this physical therapist based on positive reviews on ZocDoc, when I attempted to submit this negative review they declined to post it 'Since your appointment with Dr. Chandra did not go through, the review cannot be posted'. So another bit of advice? Don't trust ZocDoc. read more

I call Stroma my "week day happy place." What an amazing experience!!! I usually book my appointments with Alejandra early in the morning before I get to the office. It's the best way to start my day. The place is super calm, welcoming and everybody is super attentive. Alejandra is simply AMAZING!!! She knows her craft very well and have such a caring attitude. I've received PT in the past but nothing compare to the quality of service, knowledge, and ambience provided at Stroma. The PT assistants are great, all working on their own PT path. Stroma's physical therapists and staff are as good as they come. I've always been an active person, and have had my share of injuries, surgeries, and PT experiences. Alejandra, Vinita and Melanie each rock! The approach taken here is diagnostic and thoughtful. Therapists take time to understand the overall situation and often identify related issues that may seem tangential to the lay-person/ patient but help treat the identified issue. The Stroma team of PT aides & trainers benefit patients and everyone there is very open to questions & ideas. And the vibe fostered here is exceptionally warm and pleasant too! This has been the best physical therapy experience by far that I ever had. I sustained an overuse knee injury over a decade ago. I had been to two separate therapists, one who was the top knee person at hosptial for special surgery. The physical therapy did not help at all. Surgery did not help either. Vinita at Stroma was able to properly diagnose my problem, treat me over several months, and make sure I was up and running again. After a few weeks of doing more exercise than I was able to do in years, I sustained a new injury to my opposite leg. Once again, Vinita diagnosed the problem and had the confidence to tell me that it would heal on its own and it did. Now that both injuries are better, I feel like a new person. I can't believe that I am able to run again. Oh yeah...Vinita also took care of a nagging back pain that I also had for years. The whole staff is super friendly. In my life I've worked with a number of physical therapists and Vinita and the Team at Stroma stand miles above everyone else. The first time I met Vinita I had woken up with a frozen lower back and hobbled into Stroma using a cane. Vinita methodically evaluated not only my lower back but my movement patterns. Her commanding expertise and years of experience as a physical therapist were immediately apparent. Vinita's hands on work on my lower back and legs gave me immediate relief. The therapy dramatically reduced the inflamed area. I was amazed to walk out of Stroma totally normal. It was nothing short of a miracle. The session was followed up with additional sessions with Vinita to make sure the lower back was fine. In addition she created an exercise program for me to strengthen my back to prevent future problems. The PT aid assigned to work with me was exceptionally precise in monitoring how I was doing the exercises and in explaining the importance and benefits of correct form. Since then I've had other injuries and I'm always confident when I go to see Vinita that she will put me on the path to recovery. It's also great that the staff is friendly and efficient and Vinita is punctual. On the rare occasions she's running late it's because she spends quality time with each of her patients until an issue is resolved. When she's fully booked and I've had to wait to see Vinita it's totally worth it because a session with her makes such an enormous difference. Most physical therapy offices are cold and clinical but here the space is beautiful, there's state of the art exercise equipment, and soothing music that provides a warm environment. The practice feels like a sanctuary for healing. I feel lucky to be able to work with Vinita and the Team at Stroma. There is only one physical therapist at Stroma, Vinita. Stroma is like a factory where you wait on your bed until she has time to come to work on you. The scheduling is never on time so you will waste more time than necessary doing frivolous and irrelevant things while you wait for Vinita. She engages trainers who work in gyms to do the exercise portion. Often you must work on your own because Vinita seems to over-book and the trainers have to do other things in addition to the exercising portion. Vinita will take on clients even though her knowledge base may be weak in that area and then she works on you to the point of pain and prescribes inappropriate exercises. Her studio is small and there is a very limited amount of equipment. There are hardly any relevant tools for fine motor movement. Everything is makeshift. She prematurely pushes you to do plank poses. The last day I saw Vinita, she was 25 minutes late in arriving and now she was in a pickle because she had me and another client waiting for her. She projected her lateness issue onto me by saying that the reason she is unable to help me is because of my body! It's the same body that it was when I began the physical therapy. After dismissing me as someone she was unable to help, she yelled to an assistant to "put her in parafin" to heat my hand up . . . prior to leaving! To take up more time so she could feel comfortable charging for her non-service. I went to Rusk to finish up and found out what is supposed to happen in a physical therapy appointment. Transitioning over to Rusk was another world, where I was able to do the correct exercises and have appropriate therapy and I was able to be in and out within an hour (instead of 1.5 hours) because the physical therapist was always on time and able to keep her schedule with me and everyone else coming in behind me. read more

After years of working with different chiropractors and a rehab doctor, Vinita and her staff were the first and only ones who were able to relieve my back pain so that I don't wake up when I turn over in bed or am even aware of my back when I sit at the computer. One of the best things about her approach is that she treated my whole body, not just the specific lower back pain so that issues I felt contributed to the back problem were actually eradicated. Another feature of Stroma that I love is that after receiving an exercise routine, a follow-up e-mail with videos is sent--which is a good thing since it helps me remember how to do the exercises correctly.
