We were recommended this special place and so glad we came. The pasta was delicious (Bolognese and tortelloni with sage and butter) both made from scratch. Scallopini with Madeira and another with lemon. Both delicious. Grilled vegetables very good! A wonderful place. The owners very friendly and accommodating of English speakers. No candlelight but not needed. The inside of the restaurant like a warm large home. It opens at 7:30 :-). Try it out! read more

I was in Bologna for a conference and went to La Traviata with a group of 4 colleagues. I went on a recommendation from a friend and was not at all disappointed. While this restaurant is a bit of a walk from the main strip of restaurants, bars, and shopping, it is well worth it. We didn't have reservations, but we were seated outside, which was great. Being here was like being in an Italian grandmother's kitchen. Our waitress (possibly an owner?) told us her favorite dishes and said she could serve us family style. Um, yes please! Between the five of us, we split a wonderful bottle of Prosecco and three ample servings of pasta - a pumpkin tortelloni, a traditional tagliatelle, and a graminga pasta with sausage. All of these were delicious and the total cost was only 100 Euro. If you're thinking about this place- do your taste buds a favor and go! We highly recommend Osteria La Traviata. The young couple running the establishment, Edoardo & Martina, just bought it and are working hard to create a friendly ambiance with delicious food. My husband and I shared the squash flowers, risotto and Bolognese cutlet, and they were wonderful - we ate far more than we intended! Fantastic, fresh homemade pasta will leave you wondering why it's so easy to eat such amazing pasta in Bologna -- but such a challenge back home. It's not an exaggeration to say that pasta in the States, even when it's fresh, just isn't as flavorful and complex as it is in many Italian trattorie. Now, back to our story: I had the pappardelle ai funghi (mushrooms that, the owner told and showed me, were picked that day -- see the picture I've posted for proof of fungus life); the pasta was perfectly cooked, seasoned and managed to stay on my plate for about 3-4 minutes. Sigh. As I've found in other restaurants in Bologna, the follow-through dishes weren't nearly as spectacular. The melanzane alla parmigiana (eggplant parm) and patate arrostite (roasted potatoes) were good but nothing special. Then again, I was still distracted by the previously inhaled pasta to care all that much. To cap of the evening, a dish of mascarpone and fresh strawberries was placed in front of me. We came here on a Monday afternoon at 12:30 and were the only people in the place. Contrary to reviews here, we did get menus and La Mama did not come out to tell us what was fresh in the kitchen. But it being truffle season, we took advantage and ordered truffles with tagliatelle and a cutlet with truffles. Our starter was fritto misto, a delightful tray of breaded and fried vegetables, little meat pies, cheese balls, and a sage leaf. Everything was seasoned perfectly, and my husband, who is a strictly no green vegetable ever kind of person, ate every bit of zucchini on his side of the tray. It was magnificent. I also ordered the tortellini in brodo, a dish I had in Rome 2 years ago in a Bolognese restaurant that was so good, I burst into tears eating it. It had taken me back to my grandmother's kitchen. But alas, while this was okay, it wasn't fabulous. The broth was too thin, the tortellini, while flavorful, just a bit too al dente. My husband's tagliatelle with truffles pleased him as did his bollito, although it did not compare with my fried cutlet, topped with prosciutto, cheese, and a generous amount of truffles. All senses engaged happily. Soon after we gave the waiter our order, a bunch of rowdy youths - obviously known to everyone working there - came in and Mama came out, talked to each in turn, fine tuning their orders. As our meal progressed, we watched her come to each new table in turn and talk about what she had in the kitchen. She also did some slicing of beautiful cured meats right there in the front dining area, making a magnificent platter, and serving it with crescentine fritte, although we didn't know that's what they were called at the time. So while the tortellini in brodo wasn't as good as it could have been, the rest of the meal was profoundly delicious. We couldn't eat again until the next day, but that was good, too. I had tagliatelle al ragu (Bologna's). My wife had tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms and Parma ham. Very good but limited wine list. Definitely recommend a reservation. We were a party of two. This place came up in a guide to Bologna on Google. I ignored the guide the first two nights while here in Bologna, but after two days and nights of just so so meals in "the culinary capital of Italy" I had to try something to turn things around. So I listed each place on the google guide on a sheet of paper and cross checked each with Yelp. This place and one other came up on top. This place was exactly what I was expecting in Bologna, a short walk from the hotel, the owner sat at our table and helped us come up with a unique meal based on our preferences. The wine by the glass was only 4 euros and was amazing. Then came the entrees. They were amazing....homemade tortellini (invented in Bologna so I have read), with home made "Ragù" (Bolognesi meat sauce also invented in Bologna), even the bread in the basket was amazing and fresh. I actually think the owner went back and hand wrapped the tortellini in the kitchen after she helped us custom order it. The service was amazing and the decor is also. The ceiling looks like the inside of a church with arches and the place feels very warm and inviting. A cross between a small church and the owners home I would say. We had a wonderful meal here. I had the tortellini stuffed with pumpkin with pancetta, walnuts and balsamic reduction. It was exquisite. It was light, the pumpkin was not too sweet and the elements just all blended together. My daughter had the lasagna which was extremely light and tasty. We also had fried zucchini flowers that were coated with a tempura quality flour and were also wonderful. For dessert we had flourless chocolate cake with mascarpone which was delicious. The owner/pasta maker/waitress was a wonderful hostess and help us with choices after telling us to ignore the menu so she could explain what was really available. We had the added treat of watching her make penne pasta at an empty table apparently for another customer. We were here 12 years ago and had a card reminding us to go back. Fabulous food, incredible hospitality. Wonderful pasta, made in house, and dishes that reflect the seasons and the locale. I had the good fortune to visit during truffle season, and choose from the specialty menu. Manuela sat at our table to give her advice on dishes (we were sharing) so that we wouldn't miss a thing! She also made fabulous wine suggestions for us. Our meal was so perfect, that we returned for a second dinner there-- this is the only restaurant that we went to twice in our short week's stay in Bologna. We are even considering making a side trip, from Florence, when we return this year! read more

Cute little Italian restaurant. They gave us menus to review but you do not need them because the sweetest Italian woman comes out to tell you all the fresh pasta they prepare all afternoon. She had a knack for matching up the dishes with your personality and reaction as she described the dishes in detail. Absolutely wonderful! My friend took me here our first night in Bologna and we went back for lunch almost immediately. The woman who runs it is a marvel. She is so rich and full of life! We had the tortellini with prosciutto and figs as well as macaroni with sausage and artichokes, when we returned we again ordered the tortellini and also the tagliatelle ragu. My husband and friends had a delightful dining experience at Osteria La Traviata. There was a good selection of local dishes and the food was delicious. Looked up the best restaurants in bologna and this one came up on multiple sights so I knew I had to check it out. Family run and very authentic looking so it was exactly what we wanted. We went to this place led by the few reviews on yelp. The food we tried in this trattoria was ok, but not spectacular. However, I should acknowledge that we didn't order meat or pasta, something the trattoria specializes on, according to the previous reviews. my husband took me to osteria la traviata for my birthday and he did good! we made reservation weeks in advance before our travels to italy. when we arrived we were welcomed by a friendly host. once seated we see the place is super cozy and rustico with the meats and slicer in the corner of the room for made to order charcuteries. there were a couple of wait staff but we could see the lady of house mainly taking the orders. we started with lambrusco (a recommendation from our rome host), tasty. the lady came to our table. we were ready to order something from the menu but she started with her recommedations and we were hooked. we started with the sliced meats, mortadella, italian ham, prosciutto, and salami with these homemade ravioli sized puff bread. our homemade ravioli arrived a few minutes after we finished the meats. i had the cheese-like ravioli with truffled mushrooms and my husband ordered the mortadella ravioli. simply out of this world! there is nothing like real homemade pasta. we wanted more so we ordered the lamb with potatoes. it was very good. we were full but the lady didn't want us to leave without dolci so she gave us a little marscarpone cheese with chocolate sauce. mmm, mmm fabrisimo! i wish we weren't across the pond away from this place. i would be here every week. it is my hope to someday return here again. you will not be disappointed. read more
