The school is over populated, fights occur on a daily/weekly basis, my child's 8th grade counselor was inept, I was not given the copy of the IEP contract until reaching out numerous times over multiple weeks, the document should have been made available the same day. I have emailed my kiddo's counselor with a question. No response! They do the bare minimum for their job. The counselors are terrible at this school! Support at this school definitely doesn't rival those at north county schools. There are some great teachers here where you can see their passion for teaching. They tend to be AP teachers, of course. The math teachers don't really stand out. I'm not going to name names but there is a math teacher that didn't respond to any emails from parents who had emailed them with concerns. One student reported this math teacher was helping them with a math problem while simultaneously playing Pokémon Go. This was after school, though. Maybe the teacher was THAT good, doing two things at the same time but students need respect, not just teachers. The 504 process was great though, I liked the fact that most teachers show up for the 504 meetings. Thanks, caring teachers, for your support of kids with disabilities. They just spent a lot of $ sprucing up the campus and it is looking pretty nice!

I sincerely hope that the previous posters' concerns have been investigated and that they have gone to the appropriate authorities, so that they could take care of the problems. My experience at this school has been positive. My child is held accountable for all of her homework and assignments. If she doesn't complete her work, she is required to attend classes at lunch, after school, or even Saturdays to make up for missed assignments. All of the assignments and agendas are available online through JupiterEd. I receive emails weekly regarding important dates and events at the school. Her teachers quickly respond through JupiterEd or email, if I ever have a question. The only complaints that I hear from my child regarding this school is how they moved her and some other kids around to another class/teacher at the beginning of the semester, just as she was beginning to enjoy the class and getting to know everyone. Oh and of course, who doesn't complain about having homework?

I am concerned and upset that no one cares that Mr. Spates is creating inappropriate relationships with children. This was my daughter's first year at ORAA. Entering 6th grade was difficult in the beginning,…read morebecause a lot of the kids had been together for many years, but she eventually made friends and now she loves the school. Her teacher Ms. Clark was a joy to work with and seemed to very much enjoy her job and her students. I found all the teachers and staff passionate about both their jobs and the students. Many of the staff knew my daughter by name despite not even being her teacher. The parent community is very welcoming and the school as a charter always received a lot of support from the parents as they went through the difficult process of applying for approval to operate inside CVESD. The school is located on the campus of Mater Dei Catholic High School and the two schools seem to have a good relationship that allows ORAA to use the fields and theaters for school events as needed. The campus in my opinion is safe (fenced with security) and the teachers run safety drills that unfortunately are necessary these days. The curriculum is home-school based meaning the kids do a lot of independent learning at home and in class on computers. I think this teaches time management and goal setting as well as instilling a growth mindset in the children. Class sizes tend to be on the high side, 30 students/ 1 teacher with a classroom aid. When I did bring concerns to Ms. Clark, she addressed them promptly and welcomed the input. The school also regularly recognizes achievements by the students and this really does help grow confidence. I have only ever found the staff and other students to be friendly, welcoming, supportive and inclusive, which is,I think, what most parents hope for their kids. And I don't doubt that any concerns I would bring up to her teacher or the office staff would be immediately addressed.

During our first year, a teacher walked my daughter to the car to report she had pushed another child off the bleachers. When I asked my daughter what happened, she explained she acted first because the other child was about to push her off. The teacher's expectation that a child in that moment should call a "time out" and run and tell him instead of defending herself showed a fundamental lack of common sense. The principal repeatedly failed to protect my daughter from serious harassment. When two older boys bullied her, the administration did nothing despite multiple reports until the situation became physical on the playground and I was forced to send the police to intervene--an inaction that violated the state's anti-bullying mandates and demonstrated deliberate indifference. My daughter was not the only victim of these students, yet the school protected the aggressors instead of the victims. The final straw was the Title IX violation involving the girls' bathroom. The school's policy allowed a biological male student to use the girls' restroom, compromising my daughter's privacy and safety. When my daughter simply asked what he was doing there--a completely reasonable question--she was removed from class and dragged into the vice principal's office. Rather than correcting the policy to protect female students, the principal chose to shield staff and the school's legal liability, and the retaliation only intensified after I filed complaints. The school offered a bathroom some distance away as an "accommodation," which was completely impractical being located too far from her classroom. We ultimately filed a federal Title IX complaint with the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (case #09253077) due to the school's deliberate indifference. Beyond these safety failures, the school suffers from poor leadership and resource management. Despite a large park directly behind the school, our children were confined to an asphalt playground nearly all year and were allowed to touch the grass exactly once--on the second to last day of school. The neighboring school uses that park regularly. Even the sixth-grade graduation was held outside on the asphalt instead of in the building's auditorium. This is the same school that was featured on Fox 5 San Diego for placing children in tents during extreme heat because of space mismanagement. The only reason this school remains open is a handful of truly excellent, caring teachers. But good educators cannot compensate for an administration that endangers children's safety, retaliates against families who advocate for their kids, and prioritizes liability over student welfare. We have pulled our children out of ORAA, and I strongly caution other parents to look elsewhere until there is a complete overhaul of leadership.

I attended an orientation when my daughter was entering Jr high in hopes of being accepted, but the wait list for this Jr/high school is a long one and she wasn't accepted. The curriculum and philosophy presented at the orientation was so impressive, made me want to go back to high school all over again! Definitely worth checking out this school if your looking for a school for your child.
