Built in the late 1930's, it is a charming red, white, and blue wooden store that has been serving generations of families in the community of Holland, Michigan. The outside of the store has an ice cream shop serving 24 flavors of soft serve. Inside you can shop souvenirs, artisan made crafts, home decor,accessories, bottles of wine, coffee, donuts, and candy. They have a bit of everything to appeal to the campers and many visitors to nearby Holland State Park. If you forget your sunscreen, they have you covered. They also had a nice selection of souvenir T-shirts and mugs. I really liked the sea glass necklaces. It was sweet seeing families helping their kids pick out candy. I love the old fashioned feel of this delightful shop. This is a must stop for a gift or a snack if you are near historic Ottawa Beach. read more

A CHILD's cone is $5! Way more expensive considering several other ice cream places in the area. Additionally, the employees were forced by their boss to weigh every cone before handing them out: we literally saw one of the workers have to rescoop the ice cream simply because it weighed slightly more than what was "acceptable." Save your money and buy a PINT of ice cream from the store for the same price. It'll be the same quality anyways! read more

This place is outrageously expensive and not worth the wait! We paid $5 for a CHILD size cone, which is robbery. We also saw the employees weighing the cones and bowls in front of the window before serving them to customers... that seems a little tacky to us. We then found a hair in one of our cones. Yikes. To all my other dairy-free queens--dairy-free raspberry sorbet is very yummy. They also have dairy-free chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Vanilla was okay but I'd recommend going all in for the raspberry. Not sure about other DF options in the area since we just moved, but this is worth a try for sure! This little store is so cute and is great to stop into while you're walking around the area. We stopped here a couple times for ice cream (24 soft serve flavors!!) and it was perfect for a hot day. On the inside they have all of the beach essentials if there's something you're missing, and they even have a ton of souvenirs here. Really affordable ones at that! Looking at the ice cream flavor choices, I found it to be quite the variety! 24 flavors of soft serve ice cream plus some delicious hand dipped choices as well for almost any tastebud! It was difficult to decide because everything looked so good. I love chocolate ice cream so I decided on one of their hand dipped chocolate flavors. We sat on their roomy deck that had seating if you preferred sunshine and other seating with umbrellas for shade. As an employee of a competitor, I do have to say that General *kills* the game in hard serve flavors! They have so many flavors from tons of different brands, plus some homemade. Even some Hudsonville flavors that I've never seen in stores. A good variety of dairy free options too, plus unique slushee flavors. I can't wait to try the lemon cheesecake ice cream and the blueberry waffle cone ice cream. Their nitro brew coffee is my favorite! And they make their own donuts every morning. $5 for a tiny donut and coffee is probably too much but I do it once a summer when we camp at the state park. So yummy! read more

If you're already at Holland State Park, OGS is the best stop for stuff: ice cream, some groceries, gear, shirts, souvenirs, and more ice cream. It's nice to have a place like this close to the beach for limited shopping. But OGS has gone through a change of ownership in recent years, and I imagine long-term viability is a concern. If beachgoers want it to stick around, they'll have to choose to shop here. For me, it's really all about the ice cream. read more

I loved the homemade ice cream - enjoying raspberry chocolate chip, and Michigan cherry. My daughter enjoyed chocolate monster ice cream - it was THE BOMB - especially if you're a PB and chocolate fan ( like I am). The turkey and cheddar sandwich was still frozen, cheese was crumbling and the meat was encrusted in ice crystals. Absolutely terrible. Giving one star only because I can't give less. Beautiful deck outside to take in some people watching. After the ice cream, stop into the general store and get everything else you need for the evening at the campsite. But, if you're here, you're probably on vacation so where do you really have to be anyway? They've got no public restroom, which cost them two stars.
