We were…read moreable to see the Big Pink house through the fence, but my wife forced me to turn the car around before we got to the driveway because of the No Trespassing signs. I didn't blame her because I'm not looking to get shot. I love The Band, but I'm also seen the movie Deliverance so we turned around. I'm not sure how friendly the current occupants of Big Pink are, but I'm not sure the neighbors are too keen on visitors driving down Parnassus - it feels like someone's private driveway. UPDATE: I see from Kathleen D.'s review from 2014 the current owners (Don and Sue) are friendly and actually rent out Big Pink for others to stay in. However, I notice the website (https://bigpinkbasement.com/) has updates from 2015 and I wasn't sure what the current situation was like in 2024. I reached out on the website's Contact Us form and here's the response I received: "Hi Julian, Yes you may come down the road at your own risk. A neighbor put up the signs. We are still renting, the link to VRBO is on the big pink basement website. There is a minimum of 3 nights. If you have trouble booking please let me know. All the best, Susan LaSala"

My boyfriend and I hopped into our car and head on over. This barn silo turned is part of the Emerson Spa and Resort. The nice part is that if you're not staying at the resort you can see the attraction. To view the exhibit, you need $5 cash. Thankfully the show runs pretty regularly so if you need to run somewhere for cash you can. The viewing room for the kaleidoscope is pretty small. You can either lean against some cushions and stand, or you can lay on the floor. We ended up standing as there was a group of younger kids on the floor already. The gift shop has a lot of cool items in it too so definitely check that out while you're there!!

Or- if you don't have percussion skills, you could just sit back on one of their benches and enjoy the music. Simple as that. Clearly, this patch of green in the center of it all- is historic. Population 800 (or so) as of the 2010 census and that's the way I like it…read more Settled in 1788 by Revolutionary War veterans, this "middle of nowhere" and "convenient to nothing" Green County town is neither chic, nor trendy and for the moment, it still has a post office but no general store or gas station. The closest places to buy "stuff" are 8 miles in either direction. Albany is about an hour's drive north. About 15 years ago the NYT described this rural area of the Catskill Park as the new "Hamptons" -- prompting an influx of second home building/buying by the wealthy and the speculators -- banking perhaps on a failed legalized gambling initiative in the nearby Route 28 corridor. Growth has since slowed considerably (thankfully) and the town retains its quirky, mountain-man kind of reputation. Been a part time resident since the early 1960's. Lexington boasts plenty of "old school" recreation sitting astride the Schoharie Creek - a first rate, stocked trout fishing stream, amidst dozens of public hiking trails, campgrounds and ski resorts that traverse the region. This is a primal place -- where you can lose yourself in nature for days at a time with no one else around to mess with your chi -- just chilling to the gurgling of a stream or the wind in the trees or foraging wild edibles -- or whatever communing with nature means to you. I grew up here, it's the best town ever…read more Why? There's nothing here. I mean it. When I was a kid, there was (at least) a handful of businesses. We had a small grocery store, complete with movie rentals, and a gas station. There was an art gallery, a hotel, and some summer stock theatre. There was a dam that would be put into place every year to bring the water level up and allow all the kids in the town to have a place to swim. The town has since lost these things. Some of the buildings are still there, but they looked as rustic as it gets, nearly condemned, or actually condemned. The town had too low of a population to justify wiring it for cable TV and subsequently cable internet, that passed them by as well. There's little-to-no cellular service up there, so forget that. Now the town is a conglomeration of some hold-outs, dilapidated buildings, and people who have seasonal or weekend residence. Sound stagnant and secluded? It is, and it's beautiful. Have you had it with people or the barrage of the digital era coupled with the daily grind of "civilized" life? Yeah, me too. This is definitely the place to go to escape all that. You ever see those memes of people who have houses surrounded by acres of trees with the caption "when you're tired of dealing with everybody's ----?" This is the kind of place where that is actually possible. Oh, and it looks really pretty in the autumn.

Kingston, NY - if you like historic neighborhoods or walking tours, this is a nice little day trip…read morein the Hudson Valley. The Stockade district is an eight-block area in uptown Kingston that's the original site of a 17th century Dutch settlement, and still has many preserved stone houses and buildings from those times. I downloaded a map and brochure from the Friends of Historic Kingston's website (fohk.org) and did our own self-guided tour of the 1658 Stockade district. There is also another guide for the Rondout district by the waterfront. FOHK offers guided walking tours on certain days between May-October as well. This part of Kingston is a cute artsy town with some nice restaurants, shops, and cafes, and was lovely to stroll around. There are too many good restaurants to name (Yelp can help you with that!), though Hoffman House is notable for being a tavern set inside a 1679 stone house. I also recommend checking out Rough Draft Bar & Books (a cozy cafe-bookshop with brews both caffeinated and carbonated) and the delightfully eclectic Kingston Consignments. Kids especially will also enjoy visiting the Volunteer Fireman's Hall & Museum! Sadly, it was closed on the day we went even though they were advertised being open, as I gather their hours are rather haphazard.
