The pre-order and parking lot pick-up option is a great time saver. This is especially important, because this is the area where Total Wine struggles - there are never, ever enough people working the registers and the lines to check out almost always suck. This morning I ordered wine gifts online, picked up the first order in-store, and a few hours later re-ordered a couple more bottles after confirming the second recipient drinks wine. My wife (we're a married same-sex couple) was out running errands, so I called the store and offered to provide any information needed to prove it was my order (order number, details from the morning pickup, etc.). Staff refused, citing Wisconsin state law against 'third-party' pickups. Even after I explained she is my wife, they became combative and insisted she could not pick it up unless she had the exact same last name. They offered no solutions whatsoever, no option to cancel and re-order, nothing. Their employees were no help at all. What a complete waste of time today. To top it off, the bag they gave me with my first pickup was ripped and unusable when I got home. That was the last straw. We will never shop at Total Wine again. There are plenty of liquor stores in Wisconsin that actually value their customers. Total Wine feels too big and corporate -- it's all about the dollar, not the customer. I highly recommend shopping elsewhere and supporting local businesses instead. Extremely disappointed after years of loyalty. Instead, I highly recommend shopping at local spots like Downer Avenue Wine & Spirits (great selection and friendly service on the East Side) or Otto's Wine & Spirits (multiple convenient locations with solid inventory). They've been much more helpful in the past.

Martha's Vineyard is more then it's name implies, yes it has a big wine selection, but it also has the biggest beer cooler that we have ever seen and stocked with so many different beers from everywhere, they even had my favorite Sprecher Octoberfest (which I'm enjoying as I am typing). I had a party planned and I was told I could wait a week or pay more for different beer.... I made my reservation 2 weeks prior and confirmed the reservation a week prior. The staff at the store would not do anything to resolve the situation without management approval. When they finally got a manager on the phone, 15 minutes later, he NEVER apologized, or offered to resolve the situation.... he only said I could wait a week or pay more. That is not a resolution, Otto's does not care about their customers. Oh and by the way; my calls and emails were never answered. I never spoke with Cindy M, and even though I was promised a return phone call.... it has been two weeks. Otto's does not care about its customers.... shop somewhere else.

The clerks at the other lanes, being in a hurry of course, must just toss everything willy-nilly into a bag (and they'd do exactly the same, even if using the boxes (yes, reusable BOXES) that I bring, and my reusable double paper bags with handles. I pack my stuff a certain way for the ride back home -- so, thanks but no thanks to foregoing the self-check. But yeah, Stan D., nearly always a technical problem at the POS checkout. For both of our last two visits, 2 of 3 self-checks OUT OF ORDER . . . with no one, the entire time, coming around to make any effort, of any kind, to get them up and running. As a bonus -- During my LONG time spend in what should be a fast process (with food thawing the entire time), there's the same ongoing and repeated problem in the lane that WAS "working": frequent yawps of "Please place item on the belt", after it had, of course, already been scanned correctly and, um, DUH, correctly placed onto the belt. Retrieve it from the big pile of done stuff, bring it back, put it onto the belt (AGAIN), swear, hold mock pistol against your temple, pull the mock trigger. The latest 20-minute odyssey, behind just ONE other person, took that long precisely for that reason. (Without those asinine and infuriating glitches, my scanning and paying would be among the fastest in history.) This sh*t no longer feels like a reasonable price to pay, in exchange for what is still, in my view, an excellent selection and good prices (compared to the joke known as Pick 'n Save, and the lovely but costly Sendik's).

We arrived right around 7:20pm and were alerted on arrival by the single employee that kitchen was closed (despite the business hours being open until 9pm). Oh well, not a huge deal even though we wanted food we decided to stick around for the great wine. So we decided to just get a tasting flight. Once the employee decided to get off of their phone (to which they immediately returned for the rest of the evening) we placed our order. We would've loved even some minimal engagement on our selections for the flight or acknowledgment of our choices or presence period. As someone who was worked on the service industry for many years I would've forgiven this behavior at 8:45pm but we would've been better off just enjoying wine at home given it felt like the establishment was closed from the second we walked in. The wine was great but we should've just bought a bottle and picked up food elsewhere.
