I desperately want to love Shaka Farm To Beach because this is exactly the type of place I want to…read moreeat. A place where the food is wholesome, nutritious, delicious, and served in right sized portions. Sure, it's a little more expensive. Real food costs more than foodservice grade commodities. But it's worth it. The restaurant-cafe itself is super cute. There is an outside patio. If you can find a spot, there is even an adjacent parking lot, which is rare in this beachside town. Shaka's menu is quite diverse for its small space, offering lunch sandwiches, salads, savory bowls, sweet smoothie bows, avocado toasts, and even sushi. If you are craving kombucha, Shaka has your back, or if you need a double espresso to get you through they have that too. Amazingly, the varied menu hangs together remarkably well. I went with a grilled sandwich and my better half got a poke bowl. Where things fell short were speed of service, execution, and quality control. Even though this is a counter service operation, food is cooked and prepared to order, so I was expecting a wait. Still, our wait was excruciatingly long. We arrived with two other couples who ordered first, and by the time our food arrived, our friends had completed their dishes. It was also obvious that our friends were eating slower than usual to try and help close the gap, but to no avail. When the food did arrive, my Italian Job sandwich, advertised to be "toasted to perfection" was grilled beautifully on the top. However, the bottom piece of the sandwich had been burned. The kitchen cleverly put the "presentation side" up. But that also means they saw the burned grilled bread, and decided to serve it anyway. Maybe that decision was driven by the fact the order had already taken so long to bring to the table? But whatever the case, it speaks to a level of quality control and integrity that left me hanging. Yes, when food is made by hand by fallible human beings, mistakes can happen. The important thing is to acknowledge those mistakes and take responsibility for them, instead of trying to pass off a substandard effort and hoping it goes unnoticed. If our friends had not been waiting so long for our food to arrive, I would certainly have brought this up to the staff in the moment. Instead, I simply ate my half burned sandwich thinking about how much better it could have been. Even it ints substandard state, it was tasty, filling, and wholesome. Should I ever find myself back at Crystal Beach during the season when Shaka is open, I would certainly give this place another shot. But I might skip the grilled sandwich and go for one of the quinoa power bowls. N.B. Hours are limited and this is a seasonal business so double check before heading out.

I've always heard good things about Shaka, and those reviews were right! Super delicious smoothies, the one I got (Not into Yoga) wasn't too sweet which is perfect since I'm a T1D. Normally I don't splurge on smoothie or avocado toast but was extremely hungry so I got both. I got the avocado toast special (goat cheese/peaches/ balsamic glaze). I felt there was a bit too much glaze, but overall super yummy. Both workers were friendly, and fabulous.

Little did I know I'd be coming into my favorite type of literally "everything"! Eclectic and vintage decor with absolutely perfect use of vintage and antique kitchen and table ware. A very interesting and fun repurposing of an old building/house. Very friendly, patient and helpful employees (apologies to the very kind woman at the counter, because when I'm excited I tend to chatter a lot). The baked goods were delicious, the whole grain toast was hearty and so full of flavor. The croissant was large, flaky and buttery. My husband's apple cake was moist and the frosting was perfect. I really enjoyed the coffee and since they don't grind the beans for you, I bought the bag of their signature blend then stopped at Walmart for a coffee bean grinder. I love savory for breakfast so I had 2 soft boiled eggs, ham, gruyere cheese, whole grain toast and pesto. When my plate came I was very pleased to see the vintage items used and some repurposed very cleverly. If the decor isn't your "thing"...make a visit for their food and coffee.

The atmosphere was warm, inviting, and effortlessly cool, the kind of place that makes you want to linger for hours with a good book and a great cup of coffee. My fiancé and I each ordered one of their specialty coffees along with bagels, and everything was fantastic. After a less than stellar experience at Tim Hortons earlier in the trip, Seven Hearts completely redeemed our coffee expectations. It was exactly the aesthetic and experience I had been searching for. What really made it special was how quickly it felt like a place I could make part of my routine. If I lived in Buffalo, this would absolutely be my go to coffee shop. Before leaving, I picked up a couple of honey sticks and a bottle of their house made lavender syrup to bring home. Now I get to enjoy a little taste of Seven Hearts, and Buffalo, with my morning coffee for a few more days.

Upon entering, no one greeted me, and I felt rushed while looking over the menu. When I asked questions, it felt like I was inconveniencing the employee rather than being helped. I ordered the blueberry lemon bar matcha and hoped the drink would redeem the experience, but it was disappointing. The flavor combination didn't work well in a matcha drink, and it left a strange aftertaste/coating in my mouth. I also specifically requested no dairy (asked for oat milk) yet it still came topped with cold foam, which upset my stomach. It looked cute, but for nearly $9, it wasn't enjoyable. I had originally planned to order food as well, but the overall atmosphere and interaction felt so uncomfortable that I decided to just take my drink and leave.
