After working with multiple other landscaping companies, I recently hired Outdoor Craftsman for some updates to my yard and I couldn't be more impressed with the results! From the very beginning, their team was professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly easy to work with. I worked with Chris who listened to all my concerns and issues, and provided thoughtful suggestions to enhance the overall design.  Once the actual work began, my expectations were exceeded by the entire team that worked on the project, including my Project Manager Ian who personally watered and cared for some struggling plants (that are now flourishing!). Not only was the work done efficiently and on time, but the team also made sure to leave everything clean and tidy each day and were very considerate. May be good at what they do but not socially responsible. I was driving behind one of their trucks and several times the driver swerved off the road resulting in them kicking up a rock which cracked my windshield. Not professional and not competent. We were never provided with an itemized receipt, even on request. They caused over $1k of damage to our irrigation system. Not to mention that they overcharge for materials, don't provide some materials they charge you for, and seem to have nobody in charge to actually sign off on work done. They also don't honor the plant warranty. All said and done our yard did not look as good as it did prior to the project, they failed to put it back the way it was, and they essentially ripped us off. When we have discussed our displeasure with neighbors and co-workers, it became apparent many people agree that Outdoor Craftsmen's work has gone way downhill. read more

We delayed writing this review in hopes that Outdoor Craftsmen would work with us to find a resolution, to no avail. As such, we want to share our experience in hopes of sparing others from a similar situation. We had a very disappointing experience with Outdoor Craftsmen. We trusted them to provide and plant healthy trees. When one of the trees started to decline within a couple weeks of being planted, the owner of Outdoor Craftsmen showed a lack of concern after multiple follow-ups. This was before we even received the final bill and payment request. We resorted to hiring two different arborists who immediately identified a significant borer infestation and consequential woodpecker damage, along with significant trauma to the trunks of most of the trees they transported and planted. The tree in question died within a couple months of being planted despite proper irrigation. It's unacceptable for a professional landscaping company to sell trees in such condition and ignore concerns when presented. On multiple occasions we asked them to work with us to resolve the situation and they refused. We would not recommend Outdoor Craftsmen. read more

Outdoor Craftsman is extremely expensive. We requested a spring yard clean up (cost around $2k) and weekly yard maintenance. We were told that it would be around $60 for weekly yard maintenance, it turned out to be $200.00/week. When asked about the cost difference, they charge per person as soon as they step into the yard. All they are doing is mowing, edging, and blowing, this does not include weeding or anything else. The manager told us that we need to READ the fine print of the contract. We had to stay on them to fix things they broke while mowing, and tore up the yard with the mower after a big rain storm. Tried to speak to the manager a couple of times and he was very rude. I would find a different landscaping company to hire. read more

I had three very negative experiences with Outdoor Craftsmen. One in 2011 (which, like a fool, I forgave), one in 2017 and one in 2018. The sum of my experience with Outdoor Craftsmen is that they overcharged and undelivered and were extremely unprofessional, almost bully-like. In 2017, I hired them to do pots for my yard and to do cleanup. Their staff would arrive unannounced and prowl through my yard, oftentimes early in the morning, and startle me as I was getting ready for my day. I complained several times. It was embarrassing to be relaxing and see people I didn't know right outside my bedroom window. Also, they didn't get my approval on work they did and overcharged me significantly. When I informed the manager, he was rude and demanded I pay anyway, even though it hadn't been approved. Before you even start with them, you need to understand they make you spend thousands of dollars for them to create a design for you and then they force you to let them maintain ownership of the design. So, if something doesn't go well, you are out thousands of dollars and you have *nothing* to show for it. I was very reluctant but the owner told me he had my back and would take care of me. That would prove to be untrue. In 2017 and 2018, the owner of the company (Scott Deemer) and one of his designers (Chris Holthouser) put together a design for my yard that they called epic. The price was astronomical. Beyond astronomical (over $700,000!!!!!!!!!) and while the design was cool, it certainly wasn't worth $700,000. My budget was $300,000. But when I asked them to create something less expensive, they couldn't make it happen very effectively. Also, it was getting late in winter, they had forced me to sign a contract saying they owned the design and I felt it would be very difficult for me to start over. So, I swallowed hard, thought about my priorities and decided to just to say yes, believing they would make it totally amazing. They promised me we would start in Spring 2018 (which was a significant wait for me) but when it came time to start, Scott callously informed me that they booked up their schedule and they wouldn't be able to start my project stating, "The improved economy continues to give us many good projects to develop for our clients" and going on to say their "construction schedule is booked". This was after I invested thousands of dollars and several months coming up with a unique design with them. He also went on to say he didn't "feel comfortable taking on a project of this magnitude". This was a design he came up with!!! Then he blamed the city (which he said from Day 1 was totally fine. So, if you want to sign a totally one sided contract, work with people who are bullies, pay 2X the going rate in the industry, be dropped at a horrible time and be left without your landscaping dreams fulfilled, then consider hiring this company. But, if you are having second doubts, don't believe me, read the Yelp and Facebook reviews. You'll start to see a pattern. read more

I have used Outdoor Craftsmen to thoroughly landscape a two acre estate. After helping to develop an overall vision, Outdoor Craftsmen then worked closely with me to complete phased improvements over several years. Throughout the process, Outdoor Craftsmen were customer focused and professional. The results of their design has been stunning. Not only has Outdoor Craftsmen constructed a gorgeous landscape, they also maintain the property ensuring the original investment exceeds expectations. If I have any concerns, I send an email and within a few days it is resolved. Another benefit to working with Outdoor Craftsmen has been their sincere guarantees. Since installation, Outdoor Craftsmen has immediately replaced any trees or plants that did not thrive without question and under warranty. The icing on the cake has been that every year or two, we would have a reason to get a bank appraisal. The landscaping improvements always seemed to retain over 85% of the cost in the new appraisal. For large long term landscaping improvements, I highly recommend Outdoor Craftsmen. I am completely satisfied with my experience. read more

Outdoor craftsman did a beautiful job in the creation of our backyard and front yard space. This was a very educational process for us, and I am sure that at times we might have been difficult because we didn't understand every detail that goes into the planning and execution of a project like this. We were treated with the utmost respect from everyone that they employ from the project manager, to the men who worked on sight. They took care of every detail and thoroughly explained the process to us along the way, all along while being available at any time to answer the numerous questions or concerns that we had. We have been more than pleased with the landscaping that was done and feel it was worth every penny we put into it. Our family of 5 richly enjoys the backyard and we are out there all the time with each other, which was our goal. It has been awesome to watch the changes occur even as the grasses and plants mature. The front yard went from hated to loved and we are pleased with the ambiance it creates for the entrance of our home. We engaged with Outdoor Craftsmen for a huge project to completely landscape our 1.3 acres including all the trees, shrubberies and plants. They installed a large deck, outdoor kitchen, fire pit, stone patio, new driveway and entryway and so many other projects that I cannot even begin to list. We have remodeled and built several of our homes and there are always issues that arise - always, be it overruns, miscommunication, follow through etc., but with Outdoor Craftsmen, there were no issues and that is due to the amazing hands on approach taken by Chris Holthouser and his team and by the complete support of the owner, Scott Deemer. The attention to detail was quite extraordinary and the commitment by the team to get it just right made it a very easy project for us as the homeowners. Chris would be out late at night placing plants in just the right spot or driving up to Northern Colorado to look at rocks, his passion it would seem, or on the phone getting everything ordered and installed in time. Their accounting process is very easy to understand, the change order process is very well organized and I never panicked about an invoice coming in with an unknown number because that never happened and that is a first in all our years of building. It has been two years and we are very happy not only with the work performed, but also with the polite and quick responses we get when we need something tended to. Based on our personal experience of 40+ years of owning multiple homes in Boulder County, including two remodels, trying to work with Outdoor Craftsman was by far the worst experience of working with any contractor. Essentially, you are locked into a contract with thousands of dollars invested before you receive any type of estimated final cost. When asked for an estimated cost of the project, we got the evasive answer of "somewhere between $10,000 and $1 million" - when we finally received the estimated cost of the project, it came back at twice our budget. When we decided not to move forward due to the cost, we were handed a final invoice for the balance of the plan, of which we had only received a plan for about a third of the yard. My advice is to know what you are getting into dollar-wise before signing anything. read more

After a year and a half remodel and being out of our house, our yard was completely torn up. We were very involved in the house remodel and by the time we were done and moved back in, we were exhausted. We met with Scott Deemer and told him we were open to ideas. Our designer was Chris Holthouser and he came up with some incredibly unique ideas. We looked at his ideas and tweaked them a bit with our own thoughts and that was it!!! What he did was amazing!! We had to make so many decisions in the house remodel, it was nice to sit back and let them do what they do best. Everyone was professional and respectful of our privacy while they worked in our yard. No loud music and no daily trash to pick up. They kept us informed of the progress and it came out GREAT. We were so happy with the plants, landscaping and hardscapes. We can now sit back and enjoy our beautiful house AND our beautiful landscaping. These people were great for the first 3 years. Then what a mess for these last two years. I had a contract for full care but without me calling all the time things didn't get done. I had to watch everything all the time to make sure it was done right. They made several costly mistakes. They had a worker with no tree experience prune my trees while letting me think they were still using Taddiken Tree as they had in the prior 4 years. It cost me $668 to have a tree company come and fix the mess they made of the trees. Some may not live due to their mistake. I have a small pond. They said water features are something they do. They put in two pumps last year. The first was too powrefull for my small pond and burned out. The second is working but only because my houses sitter heard it grinding away and figured out how to unplug it. They had turned my pond on while I was out of town but had not yet turned on the irrigation system so there was no water going to the pond. I had called and spoken to the supervisor the day before I left explaining that I would be gone. Also since thety are the company that turned the irrigation system off and on, they knew it wasn't on. There is a long list of problems. I spent over $6000 with them last year. My contract was only $2440. So you can see that I was a good customer. The extra money went to plants and flowers added, mulch replaced, and minor repairs. They made plenty of profit off me! The owner's wife wrote this to me: "There have also been various requests for special considerations such as calling before we perform a seasonal clean up. Whenever we accommodate exceptions it is costly to us and opens up the potential for things to go awry. Such was the case with the request to delay starting the fountain." Be warned! read more
