Originally we had talked about booking with a whale watching boat for a fun excursion while in San Juan Island, but after reading some more about how those boats can sometimes disturb the whales, I decided to go with kayaking instead. So glad I did! Our guide was super knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and marine life, and I felt super safe and comfortable in the water the whole time. It was great to go with such a small group (8). We ended up getting lucky and seeing not only a few orca whales, but also a humpback whale, porpoises, seals, and bald eagles. The food was great. I participated in a full-day Haro Straight kayak tour this past Sunday. We were picked up right in Friday Harbor, drove across to Smallpox Bay, got in the water and kayaked down a few coves to Deadman Bay, walked to the lighthouse, then got back on the water to the start. Our tour guide Ben did a great job connecting with everyone, making sure we all knew what the plan was, and how to kayak well. He kept an eye out for wildlife, shared some good stories, and picked up trash along the way. He also gave us a few recommendations for dinner after we got back and had time to kill before catching the ferry back. During COVID this tour group is not offering lunch on day trips, so we brought our own. We saw plenty of cool jellyfish, some starfish, and a couple of eagles. Sadly no orcas, whales, dolphins, seals, though I understand marine wildlife sightings in the islands are becoming less and less common due to boating and prey reduction. You can't control the animals! I didn't get any pics since my camera was in the dry bag. The islands are beautiful and while these kayak trips aren't cheap they're a great way to get outside without having any of the hassle. Their bioluminescent night tour sounds pretty neat. read more

So much fun. I'm out of shape and pretty big, I was nervous about a 3 day trip squeezed into that little seat. It was definitely a squeeze, but I'm so glad I went , it was a blast and we were all tired but it wasn't hard to keep up. The guide Laura was amazing and I feel so lucky we got to see the islands from in the water. The food was great too. Don't miss the chance to kayak at night and see the bioluminescence! Our family of 4 went on a 3 day, 2 night Outdoor Odyssey Kayak "expedition." Our guides, Laura and Matthew were absolutely amazing and worked very hard from start to finish - five+ stars to them. To qualify, this is not glamping, so if you are looking for a relaxing time away from your home office, this may not necessarily be it. HOWEVER, if you've got grit and are looking for a way to get into nature to see, experience, and learn new things this is the trip for you. It is truly an experience we will never forget, and it was worth every minute. As NOTED: it may be obvious for some, but there is work involved with this expedition. Aside from the paddle itself, moving/packing gear, boats, and setting up camp is required and/or strongly encouraged...but, once the team work is done, the kick-back in the campsite begins. At which point, the guides continue to work hard to get us everything we needed. Food is prepared and served in a very thoughtful way to help manage all diets (e.g. gluten, nut allergies, vegan and vegetarian in our group of 12), plus they effectively accommodate for COVID. We never felt unsafe in this environment. We were all outside and when not in our "family pod," we were always masked up. There was hand sanitizer going around at all times. Helpful hints: 1) If you have a higher level of COVID concerns, bring your own sanitizer, wipes, and extra masks so you always have what you need on hand. Overall, OO has done a great job to address this. 2) The first day, there is no breakfast/caffeine at the pickup - make sure you eat and get your fill of morning coffee. 3) Bring a small bag of snacks to put in your personal boat to "tide" you over. It took some time to get to lunch, and the snacks helped elevate borderline "hangry" moments. 4) Finally, we took hammocks and slept in the trees, the team was super accommodating to make sure we were able to find a "good hang" spot. The San Juans are absolutely amazing and our group literally saw giant mammals and other wildlife within 60 minutes into the paddle (we were told it was a rare Orca sighting so quickly out of the gate). other sightings, Humpback ("HB"), bald eagle, cutie-pie seals, porpoises, sea birds, crabs, fish, and sea anemones. Be sure to taste the bull-kelp, it's full of nutrients. Again, so grateful for Laura and Matthew - we could tell they love their jobs! Thank you! We will be back. read more

What an incredible experience! Kayaking at San Juan Island was one of my dreams and this trip definitely exceeded my expectations. Before our trip we communicated with Tom, which was very smooth and everything was very clear. On the day, we were with a group of 4, led by our guide Kevin. Kevin was very easy going, knowledgeable and gave us good instructions before going onto the water. We really hoped to see some orcas, and we got lucky! We saw multiple orcas and also got a pleasant surprise when a humpback whale decided to join the show :) Kevin was considerate about our safety and the whales the whole time, which made us feel very comfortable. A Fun, Awesome One-Day Adventure along the Northwest Waterways. SITREP Went on a one-day kayaking trip along San Juan Island. THE SET-UP Beautiful beautiful views along the water off the coasts. Make sure to bring your camera to snap some awesome sights around Vancouver Island, the Olympic Mountains, and all the water inlets. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and very pleasant people. Do a really good job orienting you on Kayaking techniques and water safety - very important! Talking about local eco-systems and animals is their passion! Didn't get to see the whales, but there was so much to take in nonetheless. A lot of wonderful bird-watching. There is even a lunch stop at a sweet little cove - very "Blue Lagoon"ish - near Lime Kiln Park. Gotta tell you, though - if I could have done anything different in preparation for this trip, I would spent more time at the gym working on the shoulder-rotation, curling, bicep-tricep machines! Your arms and shoulders - and to a lesser degree, your diaphragm - get quite the workouts! This day adventure was about $100, actually a bit less. And they have other kinds of packages for much longer trips from 2 days to many more days. [Note: there are age limitations and a couple of 10 year old relatives were too young to participate since they did not meet the general 12 year age threshold.] THE LOWDOWN For a beautiful time spent on the water and around some breath-taking scenery, this is an extremely delightful day-adventure. Absolutely amazing and knowledgeable tour guides! Laura and Hayden made our day kayak tour so memorable. These ladies answered all our wildlife questions with precise facts and information. We also were blessed to see a TON of wildlife, our favorite being about 14 orcas from J Pod. Other encounters included an eagle and about 3 juveniles feasting on a meal on shore, a family of geese (including 3 goslings!), and all sorts of fauna along the drive and shore. We were traveling with a group of 6 - four adults and 2 kids. They were able to accommodate all of us, including a little kid, for a morning kayak. We learned quickly how to manage sea kayaks, and went up the coast to look around. So beautiful, great fun for the family! read more

We do a lot of kayaking when we travel, and this was by far one of the best kayaking excursions I've ever been on. Tom (the owner) really made the trip. He was responsive and mellow and did not appear at all phased by our emailing (we had 5 in our party mixed ages one had never kayaked before). His organization is great! We met him at his place and then boarded the van to the put in. Kayaks were easy to use, Tom went over all the basics. So if you've never kayaked before or are a novice you'll be fine! Wear shoes that can get wet! I just took mine off loaded them in the front and kayaked barefoot and rolled my pants up. We had excellent conditions it was calm, no wind and no chop. This really is an incredibly beautiful part of the world. On our tour we saw seals, bald eagles and orcas!!!! We stopped off on Turn Island and hiked around it which was fun and nice to stretch out after sitting for a while. I highly recommend this company. read more

Best way to experience the beauty of the San Juan islands. Despite the smoky/foggy environment and fire ban, our trip was a real pleasure. While we didn't get the opportunity to see any Orcas, Pat (our guide) was very knowledgable and did help us find a variety of aquatic life, numerous species of deer, seals, porpoises, otters, sea lions, many eagles and birds, and Gossip Island...twice... While the largely vegetarian cuisine was not exactly my cup of tea, the quality and quantity of the food was overwhelming...including plenty of peanut butter to fill in the gaps for the meat-eaters amongst us. Those in the group with a more sophisticated palate really enjoyed the food, and what I did try was full of flavor... I especially enjoyed the "Pat Thai". One recommendation: At the start of the trip it would have been helpful to run through each day's itinerary, speaking specifically about route and the importance of currents etc. on our timing. Things got pretty hectic/stressful in the mornings as we prepared for our departures. I think this could have been avoided with the details mentioned... Overall, this was a great trip and I would recommend it to anyone seeking a unique and beautiful way to see this amazing area. read more

I'm not the most athletic or outdoorsy type, so I am very appreciative of all the complicated logistics and friendly assistance provided by the OO team. If not for them, there's no way I would've/could've enjoyed three blissful, exhausting days paddling around some of the most beautiful waters in the world. Our smiling guide, Tom, made it look effortless as he herded us 8 unruly women through the tides and channels to hidden beaches and through groves of kelp. His knowledge of the wildlife around us was rivaled only by his ability to whip up fantastic meals. I have a new interest in Dutch oven cooking now! Fresh berry cobbler night one, savory fritatta for breakfast, corn bread for the second supper. We were surely well-fed. Another aspect I appreciated was how the guide was able to adapt the itinerary to our ever-changing whims --and energy levels. We were eight people ranging from early 30s to late 50s and had various injuries and physical conditions to consider. I think we all completed our journey satisfied, and maybe a little surprised at what we were capable of! I know I am inspired to try this adventure again. My sister and I went on a 4-day kayak trip in late May/early June. 3 months later, we're still raving about our experience. As someone with dietary restrictions, food is always a concern of mine. Our guide, Nikken actually called me 2 days before our trip to talk with me before she planned the menu. Not only did she make food that I could eat, but it was absolutely delicious. She never made me feel like I was missing out or had to be treated differently. She simply just made things that the whole group could eat--more importantly things that the average person doesn't just make on a weeknight at home, so it truly felt like we were indulging on our vacation. The camping gear was clean and comfortable. Nikken was super knowledgeable of our environment and the waters which made for a better adventure and easier paddling each day. She was really great about tailoring each day around what the group wanted to do/see. I truly can't recommend this trip/company more highly. It was the experience of a lifetime. I went on the three day Orcas and Eagles trip. Holy you-know-what, it was a great trip. Don't get me wrong, you'll work your tail off if the currents and winds aren't in your favor, but you'll like it. There's something real darn peaceful about being out on the water, and something real darn satisfying about challenging kayak conditions. Plus, the San Juans are just gorgeous. We had two fantastic guides (Tom and Connor), who took care of everything from cooking to getting us through some real challenging paddling on the last day. A sense of humor is one of the more important things when you're on a multi-day trip, and both the guides had it. They worked well together and enjoyed their jobs. It really showed, and they definitely went the extra mile to help folks out. Getting to spend three days on the water was great. So was kayaking in general. I didn't know you could fit over a case of wine into the kayaks, but hey, it turns out you can. And it tastes delicious after a day of kayaking. There's some chances to go hiking too, and no shortage of eagles, birds, and baby seals to watch. We didn't see any orcas, but that's alright, I'll keep an eye out for them on my next trip with Odesseys. You can't go wrong with these folks. read more

Just got back from an overnight camping trip with OO about a week ago, and after the time we had, I had to write a review. First of all, it's important for me to note that this review is completely apart from the fact that yes, we got lucky and saw Orca whales. And yes, we got extremely lucky that they came so close that they surfaced right in front of us several times, and even swam under two of our three kayaks. My experience was greatly enhanced by this aspect of the trip, but given that Orca sightings/encounters are completely out of OO's control, it's not fair to include that part here. Even apart from the whales, it was a wonderful and very memorable trip. The company did a fantastic job getting everything coordinated ahead of time, packing the right equipment, and getting us to where we needed to be at each stage. I would give OO top marks for their degree of organization, which made it easy for us to participate in the packing of the kayaks but not feel that we had to "do the heavy lifting." The kayak trip itself was fantastic, and I'm not sure I could have enjoyed it more. The scenery was beautiful, the food was far better than I expected (I mean, who ever thought they'd have pan-seared Brie and chutney as an hors-d'oeuvre at a public campsite?), and the paddle was both fun and challenging. Our guide, Nikken, was also a huge part of making the trip as great as it was. She was exceedingly knowledgeable, and clearly had a lot of experience and enthusiasm for her job. Somehow, she managed to have a depth of knowledge about the history of the islands, the wildlife, the geography, the tides...you name it, she had fun facts about it. She is also an excellent chef. Overall, I would highly recommend this company and trip for anyone who wants a bit of a physical challenge with a lot of fun memories, in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. Highlight of our vacation to the area! On our 2 day whale watching tour, Irene and Bret were our awesome guides, who showed us whales (not once, but twice!!), seals, starfish, bald eagles, and phosphorescent algae. They also had us eat fresh kelp, and pick wild blackberries-memorable! This was a great trip for my kids (aged 9, 10, 13), everyone was patient and helpful. The food was amazing, lots of fresh fruit and veggies, the salmon pesto pasta they cooked that night was great. My favorite, though is when they brought the berry crumble dessert up to the Haro Straight. We sat and ate, while watching the sun set over Victoria. I can't say enough great things about this trip. The tents and sleeping bags they provided were clean and sturdy and the bathrooms at the campground were clean and not-smelly. A feat in itself. Well worth the money. read more

This is a review I posted on Trip Advisor(trip was July2010): We saw Orcas from a great distance, it was pretty awesome. The lunch was great and our guide was overall good. However, she kept paddling ahead pretty far of everyone in our group and would then realize she was talking to herself and wait for everyone to catch up. A little disappointing is that we took FOREVER for lunch(a different kayak company came on the same beach after us and left well before us for their lunch) and missed out on most of being on the water while the Orcas came back through and it seemed the guide moved at a snails pace when getting ready to get back into her kayak. I would recommend this company, but suggest looking at others as well. The management responded to my review: "We are the only outfitter on San Juan Island to include lunch on our tours (all other companies require guests to bring their own) so at times it takes us a bit longer to do lunch. Also, these resident Orca whales are an endangered species. If we do see whales from our lunch spot we follow accepted whale watch guidelines and watch the whales from land as opposed to jumping in our kayaks and placing ourselves in the path of the incoming whales as some less principled companies do." My response to that (as I literally just saw their response when going back to copy my review) Is that: i understand other companies require participants to bring their lunch. But I still think our lunch could have been 15-20 min shorter(our lunch was over 45 min). Also, I understand the whale watch guidelines. We were no way in danger of getting too close to the pod while on the water (as we did end up getting in the water while the tail end of the pod was still passing and stayed a safe distance away, they were in the middle of the strait). But we literally missed out on about 10 min of being on the water with the whales pasding since lunch took too long. Our guide never explained we had to stay on land or required us to stay on land. read more

My husband and I went on the 3 day kayaking trip with Outdoor Odysseys on September 27-29 and it was AMAZING!! About us: We are in our early 30s and I am in decent shape. I am not super extreme like my husband but we do have our own recreational kayaks in Columbus, Ohio. I wasn't sure how I would do but I did fine. I was tired at the end of the day, but it was worth it! Our group: Two guys in their mid 30s, one of their dads, a 62 year old woman, and us. And of course.... our awesome guide, Tom! He was great!! He has a degree in Biology so he was very informative about the flora and fauna. He was very passionate and excited about everything we saw. He really made our trip memorable. Paddling: We paddled for about 6 hours each of the first 2 days and about 3-4 hours on the last day. It is a relaxed pace and you can take a paddling break in the kayak if you need it and you get out once or twice during the day. The night paddle is definitely worth it. Bioluminescence is a very neat phenomenon and you should go for the night paddle even if you are tired! Food: Awesome!!! Tons of FRESH fruits and vegetables! I was very surprised. Egg frittata for breakfast, Greek pitas for lunch, goat cheese and wine after paddling, penne pasta with salmon for dinner! YUMMO!! I drink my fair share of wine and there was plenty for all of us. I even drank wine on the last day with my lunch! (We had finished paddling then had lunch so I poured some wine in my Nalgene bottle and rewarded myself for a great trip!) Wildlife: We saw close to 100 seals/sea lions, Dall's porpoises, eagles, starfish, sea cucumbers, and even an octopus!!! Tom has been a guide for 10 years and has never seen an octopus! Gear: Our tents and sleeping bags did not seem very old and were in good condition. The large and small dry bags held all of our personal items. Spray skirts were provided to keep you dry (and therefore warmer!) I would definitely recommend doing this trip! I was unsure if I could handle it, but I am so glad that we did it! It was so beautiful, so peaceful, and a great experience!!!! Feel free to ask me any questions! This is not a part of the Outdoor Odysseys company but I wanted to share how we got to the San Juan Islands. We took the Airporter Shuttle (www.airporter.com) from the Seattle Convention Center (also available from SEATAC) to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal and then took the Washington State Ferry to Friday Harbor. We spent the night at Bird Rock Hotel (www.birdrockhotel.com) the night before our trip and at Earthbox Motel (www.earthboxmotel.com) the night we finished. Both were nice, but I liked the bed and breakfast feel of Bird Rock better. It was nice to take a shower right after we were done instead of hopping right back on the ferry and shuttle to Seattle. read more

We did the half-day kayaking tour with Ali, and I can't recommend it enough. Not only was it fun and action-packed, but it was perfectly suited to my ability level. I was a scared newbie and I felt very safe with Ali because she really took the time to explain everything and kept checking on me. I did a 4-day kayaking trip in the San Juan Islands and had a great time! Our guides were terrific and made sure that we had everything we needed, including helpful information about how to kayak effectively. The meals were delicious, and the equipment provided was all in great condition. Our tour took us over more open water than I expected, and it was a lot of work. Paddling 12 miles the first day is a clue that folks who sign up for this should be in reasonably good shape and have enough upper-body endurance to keep paddling for hours - but the rewards of the effort are definitely worth it. Being able to experience the beautiful islands - including land and sea wildlife (yes, we saw Orcas!) is incredible, and I thank Outdoor Odysseys and guides Kevin and Ben (as well as a great group of paddlers) for making it possible. read more

Our family of 4 (kids ages 13 and 16) LOVED the 4-day, 3-night kayaking trip with Keith and Maddie. They combined 2 groups of 8 for our expedition, and we were sure glad they did -- it gave us the great benefit of learning from 2 guides expert in kayaking, regional history, and marine biology; AND it created a really fun social dynamic among the guests. Our group of 16 spanned a wide range of ages, fitness, and kayaking experience, yet our guides managed to give each individual the level of support or challenge he/she needed. I was VERY impressed and comforted by our guides' level of technical knowledge to navigate the currents and tides to make every crossing safe and fun. I was also super impressed that they managed to accomodate vegan, vegetarian, soy-free, gluten-free, and omnivore appetites in our group without compromising variety and flavor. Just had a great 30 th wedding anniversary trip with another couple. Perfect weather, unbelievable scenery, expert guidance and top notch meals. Saw seals, porpoise, eagles, otters, deer and even Orcas ( from a distance). Laura went out of her way to take good care of us, feeding us fantastic and unique meals like I have never had on a camping trip before! Just finished up a 3 day kayak trip to Stuart Island. It was magical. I give the company huge kudos for hiring experts in the field to guide us novice sea kayakers and for making sure the experience is a fun one for everyone. The meals were fresh, healthy and delicious. Campsite was beautiful and the daily paddles couldn't have been more picturesque.
