Tolls are victims of high inflation and agflation in 2022 as vehicle passengers eat the cost for two lanes wide (each direction) with angry aggressive drivers. Fury has no wrath. Early morning traffic is moves moderately. Effective April, 2019 Outerbridge Crossing is cashless as E-ZPass is the way to travel. There are scenic picturesque views along the drive. read more

As with most bridges connecting NYC to anywhere, it's overpriced and there could be heavy traffic with extreme delays at any given time 24/7 365. You must be outer your mind if you think that I pay the tolls into NYC on a regular basis. I make it a point when touring the country to drive into NYC from New England (free), and then exit into NJ (free), and then head south (not free ugh). This is one of the reasons why. I get that the tolls into Manhattan have to be high, even though it annoys me. But the state line between New York and New Jersey is so arbitrary that I don't understand what the point is of doing the whole $15 to get in thing. I mean, I know it's good for making $$ but really. And sure enough this will cost you $15 to get in to the City - to Staten Island of all places. Very annoying. It was a bad design and does not translate well to modern times at all, and it's not one of my favorites. People just think that it's named Outerbridge because it's the outermost bridge, however, it's not - Outerbridge is a name (gasp). Yes, it's actually the dude that designed it. The Verrazano is a million times better, and now that they've redone the Goethals Bridge that's a million times better too. So no. read more

Between this bridge or the Goethals, I guess it really doesn't matter considering the prices are exactly the same and both bridges take about the same time to get you where you need to go. But the Outerbridge is easier to get to from the Turnpike and is less congested than the Goethals, and probably safer. Like with most NJ/NY crossings, you only pay when leaving New Jersey, but as mentioned it will cost you. Get E-ZPass. It beats carrying a bunch of quarters in your pocket, or getting billed online. But at the end of the day, it is all about preference. read more

Bridge between NJ and Staten Island. Ok,I'm going to let you all in on a little secret. If you are heading out of NY in a southerly direction, skip that Goethals bridge at the end of the Staten Island Expressway and take the exit for this puppy. The Outerbridge crossing, which I always thought was named for being at the end of Staten Island (which seemed logical to me), is in fact named after someone with the name "Outerbridge" - go figure! The beautiful thing is that this bridge will drop you off on either the Garden State Pkwy (to Atlantic city) or the NJ Turnpike at exit 10. There is rarely a backup on this bridge - as opposed to the Goethals and by using this method, you can chop about 35 minutes to an hour off your trip. I've been using this route for years. The only drawback is that the thing was built in 1928 and the lanes are REALLY narrow- so if you suck at driving or have ADD, this may not be the best bet for you. There is only a toll when coming back into NY. Happy motoring! read more

It must be nice to be able to name a bridge after yourself. The first chairman of the Port Authority of New York, Eugenius Harvey Outerbridge, made sure he had that distinct honorarium, although he might have thought to hire a better engineer to design his namesake, not to mention the Goethals Bridge, which were a tandem project in the early decades of the last century. Both were outdated shortly after completion, with too narrow lanes (only 10', where 12' are now mandatory; and no shoulders, nor pedestrian space). Now, while its sibling span is being replaced with a modern structure, Harvey's edifice waits, rusting and slowly falling into the Arthur Kill which flows beneath. Which goes to show that not everyone named, "Genius," truly is. That means, You, Genius! Oh, how scary is the Outerbridge!! One of the 2 easiest ways from the Jersey Turnpike to the BQE, it is a white knuckle experience. Leave the turnpike at Exit 10 if traffic appears to be slowing down. Pay extremely close attention to the road signs after you exit the toll plaza. Unless you are familiar with the plethora of ramps that require immediate action, you can go badly wrong. If you succeed and continue to the toll bridge, you see an old steel bridge that has extremely narrow lanes. And it always seems that the car in the adjoining lane nervously wants to take a little of your lane. The worst thing is to be in the outside lane. Even while driving, one can see over the side of the bridge. Hold on to the wheel tightly!! White knuckles time is upon us. To avoid the dreaded outside lane make sure you have an EZPass. The inside lane most easily accesses the EZPass Only toll booths. The fear filled outside lane most easily accesses the Cash Only lanes. Whewwww..... We made it over the bridge one more time. Bye, bye New Jersey. We're now on Staten Island. read more

When you go over this bridge you have to imagine what was going through the minds of the engineers who constructed it. It looks 2 lanes wide yet it's more like 1 1/2 lanes wide and it looks like it's going to fall down at any moment. The inability to pass the car next to you slows down traffic below the speed limit. The fact that the price of this bridge is one of the most expensive in the United States is laughable as it should be condemned. When you cross the bridge and get off ,park. Take a real good look at this hunk of junk which is totally off scale.. I've used this crossing quite a bit over the years as a gateway to New Jersey via Staten Island. It's about 10 exits past the Verazzano if you're approaching from that direction. It's only a two lane bridge and it's pretty narrow, especially if you're crossing with a larger vehicle or semi. I don't usually hit traffic on this bridge but I try to use it at off hours(non traffic) always. You only pay on the way back from New Jersey to Staten Island. If you have EZ Pass, they have sensor where you just drive thru at around 45 mph. I love this. If you need to pay cash, stay in the right lane and there is a pull off for toll lanes once you cross. The toll is $14 though. $11.75 with EZ Pass. Which is on par with the Holland and Lincoln. I'm pretty sure there is a discount for EZ Pass. I remember when tolls were $4....... read more

Seldom is a name so perfect that it forces one to believe in a higher power. Despite the odds, the man for whom the Outerbridge Crossing is named had one of these names. Eugenius Harvey Outerbridge. He didn't force it. He didn't create it. But he followed it - to the mountain top. The path chosen led him to the run the Port Authority - the agency's first ruler. People wanted to honor Geno - as his buddies called him - but they were circumspect of the redundancy potential. So the Port Authority Bridge was named "Outerbridge Crossing." And with that Geno's legacy was lost - forgotten by most everyone. They assumed it was named for it's location far south - outer. And it was a bridge. Oh, how they were wrong. So damn wrong. Not a fan of this bridge. It is very narrow and seems dangerous. There are 2 lanes in each direction and if you are next to another car it feels like your one mistake away from crashing. The toll is up to $13 if you pay cash! If you live in New York and have EZ pass it's only $10.25. Ridiculously high! read more

Beats taking the Goethals. Almost never traffic going north when in Staten Island... can't say the same for RTE 1, the Turnpike, etc...

All I can say is new street lol not so bumpy any more.

Lanes are narrow. There will construction going on this summer that will cause the bridge to be closed at night.

Much better than the Goethals bridge, especially if you are coming from the south as I am from Maryland. The I-278 interchange seems to be congested more and the west shore expy and the Korean War veterans parkway are less stressful routes and help you avoid most of the Staten Island expressway. read more

This bridge is very old, narrow and a major rip off.

I have crossed this bridge literally, over 500 times. On the way into new york there is a 40 mph easy pass express lane which speeds travel up, but there is limited space to shift 3 lanes to get onto the highway 440. The way to jersey includes a very very sharp turn onto I-95, definetly slow down when pulling that turn. read more
