The Pulaski Skyway is a steel deck truss cantilever bridge connecting travel between Newark and Jersey City, the roadway crosses the Passaic and Hackensack rivers, Kearny Point, the peninsula between them, and the New Jersey Meadowlands. NJDOT has indicated the overall length of the bridge structures to be 3.5 miles (5.6 km) and identified the Hudson County section as 14,900 feet (4,500 m) long. Entering Holland Tunnel we drove into New Jersey state towards Piscataway, NJ to laid my beloved family member to rest. The ride was smooth without any bumps and has nice visual scenic views of NY and NJ landscape. I give credence to the name "The Skyway" for the scenic view. Our funeral driver appeared very experienced with directional compass finder and locations. Fortunately traffic segue moderately for a Friday afternoon of January 2022 as our funeral car hearse err on the side of caution carrying a body in a casket. The Pulaski Skyway's lanes are narrow, but nevertheless it enabled travel to our destination there and back. Like any road or highway be mindful to allow extra travel time due to traffic, accidents or man made construction (God, willing) as a hinderance. read more

The Pulaski Skyway is usually a breeze going in either direction, depending on both the day of the week and the time of day. It's the easiest connector to/between Jersey City, North Bergen, Seacaucus, and some other surrounding cities. The double lanes are a little tight so as always whie driving, keep your head on a swivel, especially when you're near or next to big 18 wheelers that share the road. read more

If you need the bathroom up here, good luck. You might end up putting the poo in Poo-laski. Honestly, the Pulaski Skyway is pretty amazing as it whisks you over New Jersey towards New York - or away from it. It's visually stunning and it's a great way to get you out of a very congested and difficult industrial area, with swamps and marshes and all that stuff. It does often get shut down, and when it's open it'll have a lot of construction. Of course the surface isn't always good, in fact it's awful at times, and it's thin and dangerous and very unpredictable. Sometimes it's empty and sometimes it sucks. I'll give it 4 stars especially for the views. read more

I hate rollercoasters or any structure for that matter where routine maintenance is always a certainty, until it isn't, and the quote of the day, post tragedy, is usually, "I can't believe we missed that." So too is my wholesale reluctance to travel on the depressiion-era atrocity known to all white-knuckled New Jersey drivers as the Pulaski Skyway. Almost 90, this 3.5 mile thrill-ride of a bridge connects Newark and Jersey City, was built for vehicular volume not seen since the late 30's and relies on a concrete and steel superstructure that engineers laughed at on opening day. If I find myself on it, it just means I'm atoning for the sins of a previous life. Always congested, ridiculousnessly tight and offering breathtaking views of New Jersey's unique brand of urban blight, the Skyway tells all who travel it - relocate your family or business somewhere else. One of the worst roads in America and certainly in NJ, which has no shortage of eager candidates. Can I open my eyes now? read more

The Pulaski Skyway, better known as, "The Skyway", is a unique bridge in New Jersey. Most people drive under this colossal bridge on the New Jersey Turnpike not really knowing what it is, except for the fact it is high up, it is a massive structure, and it is easily the most recognizable landmark in the state outside of Old Barney. The Skyway rises majestically over the Passaic River and the Hackensack River, as it carries both US Routes 1 and 9 from Newark to Jersey City. Named after General Casimir Pulaski, a Polish American Revolutionary War figure prominent to New Jersey, it is quite a wonder to drive over. The Skyway is off limits to both trucks and pedestrians, so if you are planning on walking across this monstrosity like I was, sorry, you will have get your bridge walking fix further up north, or across the river. At least you will not have to pay a toll if you have to use this bridge! Prior to the I-35 Mississippi River bridge collapse in Minneapolis, the Skyway was in horrendous shape, the state rendering it the worst of its bridges. In 2014, the state undertook a massive project to rehabilitate the bridge and make it safer, which I think they did a great job doing. I do not feel like the weight of the bridge will collapse the next time I drive over it. I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky. Or at least, that's how I felt driving on this skyway in the evening. After leaving Manhattan, I found myself here as I headed south back toward Baltimore. It was an extended and elevated drive, narrow, but fun. Since it was night time, I didn't get a good view of the surrounding, but no worries there. It was a good complement to the excitement that Manhattan brought me. read more

The Pulaski Skyway, aka "The PS" (not a thing) is one of the hidden gems in northern New Jersey -- once in a while it's a diamond, the rest of the time it's "oh look, more dirt." It's great when it's great, and a beast when it's not. Anyone living in or around JC, Hoboken, and/or Weehawken knows what I'm talking about. It's the most direct way to get to EWR, 95N/S, and into interior NJ. Most other ways are tied up with nonsense traffic (i'm looking at you, onramp to 495E by the Lincoln Tunnel) and are just generally unpleasant choices. The PS has mostly been closed for the last forever, at least one way. Deemed one of the most unsafe bridges currently accepting cars of all shapes and sizes by smart people with a keen eye for the terrible, we're in year two of a very long reconstruction and resafetification wherein one side is always fully closed. First it was westbound, now eastbound. Leaving will be fun, but coming back will definitely add some time to your route. The unpredictability is what makes it so interesting. One moment it could be the biggest timesaver in the world, and the next, the car in front of you drifts 3 inches to the right and kills their tire and rim simultaneously. Given there's nowhere to pull over, enjoy being stuck. But that's part of the charm! In any case, the PS (still not a thing) is well on it's way to becoming one of the most updated and safe roads to travel on. Someday soon, when driving on the 1-9 (two names are better than one name), cars will be able to go in both directions, enjoying a roadway that is just as narrow and unpredictable as ever -- but, to some degree, much, much safer. read more

So, here I am stuck on this bridge that I have traveled on all my life and my stomach start growling. I pulled out the phone and open my best friend food app YELP, search nearby and find the The Skyway as a review spot. How stupid and funny is this at the same time!! I look up and see the awesome landmark skyway sign and snap a cool picture. For what's it's worth, I never had a chance to read it, cause we're either always driving like 80 on this bridge and dead stop. I can't wait for this road project to be finished so things can be somewhat normal backs towards the Holland tunnel. If your a tourist, do your self a favor and take any other route, you never know what to expect with the Pulaski Skyway. read more

The structure itself is very unique, and the fact that there are off ramps in the center of the skyway is quite interesting. Once in a while, I do utilize the skyway during the "off-peak" hours. Let the pain begin. A 2 year leave of tour has just begun. So what are you goona do? So I've only crossed this god forsaken rickety NJ to Manhattan via the Holland bridge causeway about 10,000 times or more in my life. At times I've felt myself age while in horrific traffic typically heading into NYC. The sea of never ending construction signs along the route has been as ubiquitous as the NJT or GSP mile markers. So now you take a 2 yr break just prior to the summer of 2015 or perhaps the infamous summer of pain. Poor Hoboken, poor Jersey City, poor us commuters. I suppose a fix was well over due so there's no time like the present to avoid a catastrophe. We will wait for you to come back to us with a new shiny coat, svelte cables, bulging steel girders and freshly paved roadway. We will curse you by my figures for about 24 months. Yelp makes this bridge sound like an awesome tourist attraction, or some enchanting skyway...but in actuality, it really isn't. To cut straight to the chase, this is just an ordinary bridge...perhaps the shortest bridge I've driven across with no spectacular view. Oh Pulaski Skyway, how I love and loathe you at the same time. When it comes to traveling into NYC from NJ, you provide the most direct route right into the heart of Manhtattan. Unfortunately, every so often, which has been more frequently lately, you are the bane of any motorists existence. I imagine getting stuck in traffic on the Pulaski Skyway is how fish feel when they get trapped in plastic six pack rings. There's limited room for escape and, the more you struggle, the more frustrated you become. I can't fully disown you though. You are my lifeline. It will be sad to see you gone for two years for construction, but I hope you will come back better than ever. read more

When I'm asked to work in Newark, I usually utilize this sucker to zip on down to my job coming from JC in 10 minutes or so. It's an easy ride and definitely a convenient workaround to eating a toll on the turnpike or something. GAME OVER if there's an accident or they're doing construction in one lane. There aren't any shoulders to pull off on so it becomes backed up very quickly. Also - the potholes are like real craters. You will kill your car driving over them every day if you aren't careful... Also, I don't know what it is, but on this highway more than any other, there always seems to be like 2 people doing 20mph side by side not letting anyone get through and the speed limit is 50mph. Things simply got done the old fashioned way. With a little grit, blood and honey. Could you imagine constructing a bridge with a center lane ramp? I can't. That's a shame. Adds to the cruising possibilities. Keeps you bouncing on the roadway, sorry SKYWAY, when you're racing fellow motorists across Jersey's glorious span. And another thing. Painting a structure jet-black is a hard statement. It shows the world, "sorry, this sucker ain't for wimps and rascals. It's for best guys, only." You are telling the world that a bridge like this will stand the test of time. Physically, sure. But also in the hearts and minds of Garden staters everywhere. Catch the view if you can. Construction is taking too long... The bridge has been closed two years and they finally finished work on the north bound lanes!!

This road can be your best friend or your worst nightmare depending on when you get on. But of course it's unavoidable. Constantly under construction and to make matters worse the northbound lanes are going to be shutdown for 2 YEARS! Can you say, mass transit? It's only fitting that this is not only my 400th Yelp Review, but also my last as resident of Dirty Jersey. The Pulaski is a legendary road, which at times, I both love and hate passionately. It was built 100 years ago as a link between Newark and Jersey City, an expressway to get people to the Holland Tunnel. Since then, until recently, it has undergone no repairs or upgrades. The beauty of the Pulaski, is you can drive as fast as traffic allows, as there is absolutely nowhere for the police to set up a speed trap. The horror of the Pulaski, is that you can get absolutely punished in parking lot traffic due to the slightest accident. It's a beautiful iron monstrosity, which carries us over the swamps of Essex and Hudson County. It's the most direct way into the heart of Manhattan. And now, it's closed East Bound for 2+ years. Oh Pulaski, you represent so much of what I love and hate about my home state. You will be missed dear friend. read more
