We found a men's riding jacket with a built in Zipper hoodie, which was regular priced for $245 was on the rack for $145. With help from a sales lady we found a Large and an Extra Large which I purchased for myself and my nephew. One disappointment was they couldn't take my $20 of Harley points for the purchase. Anyway I have my nephew the jacket about an hour later and he loved it just like I did. Overall we were very happy with the purchase. Will be back again next year.

Located to the east of the Badlands National Park, this is a tourist destination, for sure,…read morecomplete with souvenir shop. Especially appealing to urban dwellers who have never experienced life on a farm. I paid the current fee to tour the grounds. There is a short (10 minute?) video available, then you can don vintage clothing and walk the homestead at your leisure. Walking up the pathway to the left, you will probably see prairie dogs running from hole to hole. They may or may not observe you as you walk along. Inside the home on the left, the dirt-floor room has a button which you push to get a bit of narration. The right side of the house was a newer addition, with furniture and wood flooring. In the old section, you will find the original homestead, with the bedroom in back. Check out some of the 'wallpaper' and you can read articles of news from the era. Yes, they used newspaper to help insulate the home. There are lots of items to see from the homestead days. I found the cream separator to be an interesting apparatus. There was a cellar which had a chicken wire mesh over the entrance. You could see inside from the walkway. The chicken coop was next, typical of the era. On to the barn, there is a broken down Ford Model T in one bay. Various saddles and equestrian items are next. To my surprise, a pony and some chickens were in the next section, staying inside to avoid the approaching storm. An outhouse is set back a bit, nothing fancy, a little worn for time. There are various farm implements out in the yard. I found the big kettle, complete with firebox, to be interesting to investigate. They used it to render slaughtered animals, and also for washing clothes. A sign along the pathway displayed typical Midwestern humor. Words to the effect: The government put up 160 acres to your $16, betting that you'd starve to death before 5 years had passed. All in all, a decent display of how the settlers in the area lived in bygone days. A helpful addition would be guided tours vs. the self-guided tours. I recommend.

This is about as rural as it gets. Scenic is a ghost town. All the shops on the main strip are…read moreclosed, the only store still open in Scenic is this one. Scenic was recommended to us by our clerk at the liquor store in Pierre, so as loyal customers, we came here. I swear I could see tumbleweed at every turn. We arrived at this trading post to take rest and to also explore the ghost town. The shop owners were friendly enough and were quite willing to chat. For $2.5million, you can buy the whole town of Scenic. Now, that is a steal. Just think, you could be the mayor of Scenic! This is a hodge podge shop selling everything. You can find authentic beaded earrings, dreamcatchers, bracelets, bison jerky and used clothing too. It is also a thrift store. Very weird collection of things. I did manage to buy a very unique dreamcatcher for a very special person. This was a nice break from the driving. We also got to chat with the store owners and learnt that she lives on a buffalo ranch. I love it! We also got to walk around on the Main strip, and got to take a few snapshots of the town that longer exists. Wow, it is eerie!

While on our trip out west in September…read more2025, we had the great fortune of finding the Native West Trading Co. in Interior South Dakota! The business was closed that day as the owner, Jenny was restocking and organizing after her busy tourist season was over but she happily invited us in. What a great little family owned business!!! What we found inside was a fantastic selection of hand beaded jewelry and hair accessories, moccasins, native blankets, clothing and so many treasures too great to mention. My favorite find was a baby blanket for my newest grandson who was born after the trip. I will always treasure it along with the happy memory of finding goodwill and good conversation in Jenny's little business. This is a must stop for visitors at the Badlands National Park, so close and easy to find!
