We stopped by Wall Drug Cafe and tried the vanilla and chocolate donuts along with the apple pie and blueberry pie. It was a nice stop during the trip and a fun experience overall. The 5-cent dine-in coffee was a nice touch and added to the classic feel of the place. Among everything we ordered, the blueberry pie was definitely the highlight and was really good. On our way to Badlands National Park, we finally gave in to the endless Wall Drug billboards. There are so many you almost have to stop, and honestly, they worked. The place is massive and feels like it sits halfway between a classic tourist trap and a legitimate retail stop. Some sections were actually really fun to browse, and I enjoyed exploring the variety of shops. That said, seeing a lot of made-in-China merchandise was a bit of a deterrent for me. The dining options were on the pricey side, and the food quality was just okay, nothing memorable or to write home about. This is a must see stop in Wall, SD! I was worried it'd be too much of a tourist trap. And it is touristy. But it is cool and historic, and the prices are surprisingly reasonable (certainly better than Cracker Barrel, and at least Wall Drug is a one of a kind!). I was there for the food, but the rest of my family enjoyed wandering through the shops and playing in the outdoor area. They really do have free ice water and $0.05 coffee. Mind you, the water is icy but not especially tasty (well water?), and the coffee is pretty blah, but it was charming that they maintain those prices. I had the fish and chips, and then I had a chocolate frosted donut for dessert. The fish was three small pieces, and one piece was over-fried, but the fish was flaky. It came with a pre-made, hyperprocessed tartar sauce, but one smell of that, and I decided to stick to ketchup. The fries were fine. My husband had a buffalo hot dog (he said it was fine) and the broccoli cheddar soup (he enjoyed that). The kids ordered off the kids menu. Condiments are all in single serve packets except the ketchup, which comes from a dispenser. You order at the counter, then you find a seat. There is seating for 530, which I imagine would be rough in the summer, but we were there in March, so there was plenty of seating and a very short wait to order or get food. They call your number when the food is done. I think I waited about 10 minutes, which gave me time to get drinks and read the brochure with the history of Wall Drug. There is a person who clears the tables, so you don't have to bus your own table. read more

Some people say this place is a tourist trap, but I actually found it very cool to visit. I stopped here because I was starving, and there's really not much to eat between Rapid City and Sioux Falls. It was a cold, rainy day, and I originally thought it was right off I-90, but it's actually about a mile or so after exiting the freeway. There were still quite a few people when I arrived. I entered through the main entrance and walked past a few gift shops before finding the café in the back. The café was nicely decorated for the holidays, which made it feel cozy and welcoming. It's an order-at-the-counter place , you pay first, then they call your number when the food is ready. The menu is pretty basic, mostly burgers and sandwiches. I went with a classic burger and skipped the fries and onion rings since I'm trying to avoid fried food. The burger was delicious, though that might have been partly because I was really hungry. I don't usually shop at gift stores, so I can't say I noticed anything particularly interesting there. If you do , I won't be surprised you stuck there for hours ... Overall, I'd say it's better than I expected and not as much of a tourist trap as people make it out to be. read more

We stopped in to eat breakfast twice - not many options in the area in November (the whole town like shuts down). It was basic breakfast but pricey I thought for some pancakes & eggs. It also closes super early so we never got our pie after dinner. I will say the pancakes are huge & really good! Coffee literally is only 5cents! We spent 2 full hours over 2 days shopping - there are several little stores within the big store - everything from Christmas, to clothing, jewelry, home decor, convenience items, boots galore....it was so much to take it! It's like walking into an old rustic town but all inside. It's def a cool stop through. Not somewhere I would go out of your way to see, but if you passing buy, stop in for a bit. during the busy season, there is extra parking lots at the end of the street. read more

That's because the billboards for Wall Drug can be found on an approximately 650-mile-long stretch of Interstate 90 from Minnesota to Billings, Montana. So, what exactly is Wall Drug? It's literally in the middle of nowhere in Wall, SD, where the city's 2020 census population counted 699 residents. It's a roadside attraction and tourist stop near the Badlands National Park. The complex includes a collection of cowboy-themed stores, a drug store, gift shop, restaurants, cafeteria, chapel, and an art gallery, On-line descriptions range from a "complete tourist trap" to "amazing". Think of it as a huge shopping mall for tourists looking for t-shirts, toys, pottery, art, clothes, novelties, etc. They are renowned for their chocolate, vanilla, and maple cake donuts, free ice water, five cent coffee, a backyard courtyard for picnics with kiddie attractions and some cool photo ops with a scaled down Mount Rushmore, a real stuffed Bison, and a 6-foot rabbit. Our tour bus topped there for a lunch and a shopping break, and we had a blast. I had a Bison Hot Dog ($9.59) that was pretty good! First of all, they do the most coolest marketing ever with road signs starting 40 miles away and being placed like every mile. Just brilliant, esp if there are kids bored in the car needing a car game. By the 18th sign I was invested and had to see if they really have donuts and clothes and all the other 500 things they were advertising. They do. Including the bison burger. Which was yummy. I was not expecting inside to look like shops meet universal studios inside an unassuming building. My mind could not comprehend everything I was looking at, honestly, but I got some super cool wall drug souvenirs for my family now, and cannot wait to show them my pics and tell them about this place. Wall Drug was a bucket list stop for us and we saw at least a 100+ signs along the way! Not that it's super exciting or anything I guess it's just the historical hype for me. We enjoyed a quick stop had a tasty donut, the free ice water and the nostalgia of sine childhood memories hit us. A spectacle in every way! Interesting dioramas and placards around every corner that really draw you into the experience. Much of the merchandise is quality and furthermore, interesting! Interesting stop when visiting Badlands National Park. The park is gorgeous and Wall Drug has interesting shops, quirky decor, and good donuts. The vanilla donut was my favorite. I'm giving two stars because I was disappointed in the amount of items that are "designed" in the United States but made in China. I was hoping to see more items made in South Dakota- I can buy China on Amazon. I did, however, find some nice pottery made by Native Americans. Definitely a tourist trap but still worth the stop! I was ready to skip this place because of the tourist type crowds but we decided to check it out anyway and I have to admit it was pretty neat. It's at least worth a quick visit. There's so much to see, almost overwhelming at first. You could easily spend hours exploring but we were in and out in about 20 minutes. Picked up a T-shirt and some stickers, and that was good for us. We tried the donuts--highly recommend. Very good! The only downside was the women's bathrooms were being cleaned while we were there, which caused a long line (about 20 people) for a single stall. Parking was easy--there's extra parking lots for bigger vehicles and parking along the side streets as well. And if you have an extra time, you should check out the library. It was unfortunately closed when we stopped by, but worth the visit as well! read more

If we hadn't already had this place on our radar before we left the house, I don't know how we would have ever known this place existed....that was sarcasm. I'd been here as a kid, so I did have this already on our list of spots, but we would have probably been drawn in by the 10 thousand roadside billboards along the way. Making our way from Michigan to Yellowstone, this was an obvious stop to stretch and do the usual "we're finally free from the car" things. This place was huge and pretty much a mall. They have a bookstore, jewelry store, shoe stores, food, fun photo ops with old statues on benches, and of course TONS of people just trying to stay out of each other's way. We didn't spend much time here, but the time I did spend was at the "Hole in the Wall" book store. I love getting books for my niece and nephews so I did grab some things there. With the ten thousand billboards along the road, it is hard to forget or miss. It was definitely a fun little stop on the way to our next stop, which was Mount Rushmore. read more

When in Wall you must visit Wall Drug. After a day in the Badlands decided to stop in and check it out. When you walk in make sure to ask for a map. So many gift shops you can get lost. Definitely for tourists and prices are a little high. But you're on vacation so enjoy. This establishment goes back to 1931. Few customers stopped in. The owner decided to put up a sign on the highway saying free ice water. Everything changed people were pouring in. Today you can come in and get a cup of coffee for a nickel. The Hustadt's moved out here in 1931 & they offered free ice water to those passing through. Now there are endless signs every few feet with billboards taking us here. We followed the lines of the crowds inside at lunchtime. Today we came for lunch. We waited on a long line, placed our order & were given a number. We found a table to enjoy our lunch. Lunch was $40 with water & was just okay. The line moved a lot faster than we expected. We wandered around again for 2 hours, exploring the back of Wall this time. Two hours is actually too much time to spend here after work eating lunch. We explored all of the shops and we were done in one hour. We ended a trip to the Badlands with a meal at Wall Drug. The restaurant seats several hundred people and definitely has a cafeteria feel. We had pulled pork sandwiches and buffalo burgers and a maple donut. The sandwiches were good, not great, and they arrived very quickly. The maple donut was really good. The rest of the complex is filled with shops and exhibits. The shops range from tacky tourist crap to nice jewelry. There are also a few activities. For $12 you can buy a bag of sand filled with gems or fossils and "pan" for the goodies. read more

It is a sequence of gift shops, t-shirt shops, jewelry shops, and a cafe that serves the World's Best cinnamon rolls and pecan rolls. Coffee is still $0.05. ice water is still free. I won't comment on the 'souvenirs' available. If they have it, you probably don't need it. But the cafe isn't half bad (except for the prices!). They offer dining, activities, gifts and souvenirs, visitor information and famous for its free ice water. We shopped for a few souvenirs and also had lunch here. I had the fantail shrimp with onion rings. I was quite hungry as I kept shoveling food into my mouth. Crunch crunch. Overall, a great stop in between the national park and Rapid City. read more

**June 2025: Tuesday Evening Visit** One of my friends who's visited South Dakota said that I HAD to visit Wall Drug and that no South Dakota trip would be complete without it. Naturally, I included it on my itinerary. If you're from California, it kind of like a small Knotts Berry Farm. It's a big indoor destination that's mostly focused on gifts, food, and some misc stores and every room is western themed. I believe there's also a chapel and a museum, and a whole outdoor area that has interesting photo opportunities. My travel buddy and I enjoyed a simple dinner that included a Buffalo Burger w/ fries ($18.47), a Chicken Salad ($16.19), and a maple donut ($2.69). The buffalo patty tasted like a typical beef patty, but the flavor and portion was good. The chicken salad was enormous and all the ingredients tasted fresh. It's a very casual setting where you order and pick up the food. After our bellies were full we spent at least 2 hours exploring the different sections. I bought a number of souvenirs for my family and friends and with each purchase you get a free "Wall Drug Store" sticker or you can buy them for $.15 a piece. The magnets are reasonably priced and I think if you're trying to budget your time I think 3 hours to explore the property is probably better than 2. There are so many rooms with souvenirs, clothes, crystals, food.. more than you can imagine! it is so possible to get lost. I tried their famous donuts. you can choose between vanilla, chocolate, or maple frosting. they came hot. they were okay, but had a lemon flavor kind of like an entemanns cake. Want free ice water? Stop on over at the Wall Drug Store. How about $.05 coffee. I don't drink coffee but for a nickel, get some caffeine in your system. Anyway, after visiting the Badlands, a friend and I ended up here at Wall. I did get some water, and dinner at the restaurant, before wandering the complex made up of a chapel, a museum, a pharmacy and tons of shops. There's also a backyard area with a bunch of quirky photo ops. And all in all, I can add this to my "been there, done that" list of accomplishments. As for the usual tidbits I share - arrived in the early evening. Parking was not an issue. And unlike places back home, street parking was free. All the staff I encountered, were friendly and helpful. In the Drug Store, it seemed to be staffed with students. Though I did meet a few who had stories to share. Prices are reasonable - again, in comparison to where I'm from and what I'm used to. So I did stock up on souvenirs. It's not a place I had plans to go to, just for this stop. However, if I'm South Dakota again, and close to the Badlands, I'll definitely drop in again. read more

I wasn't expecting much but ended up pleasantly surprised and satisfied. The only place with seats available was the cowboy cafe. We both had the bison burgers which were a good size and prepared to order. The onion rings were very good, fries were adequate. We decided we had room for dessert so we had pie, one slice cherry and one slice blueberry. The pieces were enormous and FULL of fruit filling. Nothing chintzy about it. We also ordered our "free for Veterans" donut to go which came with a decent cup of coffee. Breakfast is served! The service is fast and efficient. For the price, I feel like we got a decent meal. No tipping culture here. The tables are kept clean and the free ice water flows freely. There aren't many choices out here but you should not hesitate to check it out. read more

We first got some ice cream and the free ice water was super appreciated with temps in the high 90's. Cute town. Nice touristy stop. Prices seem high. I bought some cold medicine and although I am unfamiliar with SD prices, from my experience it was a very inflated cost. I did pick up some very inexpensive post cards and a couple of small gift items. There are multiple shops within the one building so wandering is your best options. Food is ordered at a counter and a number assigned on your reciept. Listen for your number to be called over the loud speaker, pick up your food and then select your seat in one of the dining rooms. Each dining room is decorated differently, all with a 'wild west' type theme. One highlighted Native Americans of the past while another highlighted the different cattle brands ranchers used for example. We ordered egg sandwiches. They come on grilled bread with two eggs and to be honest aren't very good. Too greasy. No flavor. Cheese is the orange 'cheese food' type. The five cent coffee is about 6oz and tastes like five cent coffee. All the staff were very pleasant. Walking into the 'mall' area is walking into an entertaining wild west parody. It's a fun tourist stop. Water is indeed still free at the soda machine in the dining room. Happy trails. read more

Yes, this is a tourist trap. Yes, you can see billboards advertising for this place stretching for hundreds of miles away. And yes, it's kitschy. But it's pretty unique and conveniently located next to Badlands National Park, so I would definitely stop by to at least try their free ice cold water! You would be part of history, as the drug store drew weary travelers to enjoy a refreshing break as there was way fewer amenities back then. When you enter and wander around, you might be confused by the huge number of shops, but they're not in competition with each other; rather they're all owned by Wall Drug. It makes the place feel like a bustling market. The gem of this place is the cafeteria though, with its free ice water an 5 cent coffee (dine in only, if you want to make it portable you have to pay extra). I can attest that the ice water tastes like, well, ice water. I didn't try the coffee. It was pretty full so I guess the food is good! read more

What a fun place! My wife, daughter and I went here last Friday and had a wonderful time! It's a REAL fun place to go and just walk around and enjoy the stores and the hoodies in each one they are offering for sale. We spent several hours just walking around and looking at things. The roaring dinosaur is a hoot! The old fashioned rides for children such as the hose and wagon 25cent ride are so nostalgic that it brings back your own memories as a child! Really loved this place, being from California, we don't have anything that even comes close to such a wonderful place! We were driving along I-90 East between Custer, South Dakota and Badlands National Park (09.27.2024). We started to notice, and to anticipate, advertising signs for Wall Drug Store in Wall SD every few miles. The first one advertised that they have ice cream. The next, 5-cent coffee. Then, western wear. Free ice water. Etc. So, I pulled up their website on my phone, and found that they're a 76,000 square foot Western-themed attraction with shopping, restaurants, an art gallery, and kids-oriented activities (TrainStation water show, photo with T-Rex, ride on a jackalope). During peak season, they can get up 20 thousand visitors per day. We decided to check it out, and to grab some dinner while there. To our surprise, the 530-seat restaurant (and most everything else) closes at 6 pm (or earlier), so we went to the restaurant first. Another family joined us in line to order their dinners but, at that hour, most of the other customers were only ordering doughnuts. My husband ordered a Buffalo Burger with fries ($16.68), which featured a 1/3 lb. burger on a toasted bun, with lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and pickle. There was a table with ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc. (Burger by itself was $11.99). Rating: 3/5. The burger was quite dry and under-seasoned. I ordered an all-beef hot dog, which was served on a bun with three pickle slices. ($6.69). (Rating: 4/5). We both agreed that I made the better choice as the hot dog was nicely grilled on the outside but still juicy on the inside. It would've been nice to have some onions to go with it. We also felt that our dinner was over-priced, especially as it was essentially fast food -- ordered/picked up at the counter without table service. We paid about $30, even before tip, for just a burger, hot dog, and one French fries. Ambiance. There are multiple rooms with a lot of tables in each, remembering that they can seat 530. As we were approaching the closing time of 6 pm, there were only about six of us left in our section. Soon after, staff started to close up for the day, sweeping the floor, wiping down tables, while also carrying on a conversation with each other across tables. This was disruptive for enjoying our dinner. On the positive side, the restaurant also serves as a gallery, with more than 300 original oil paintings and illustrations with Western themes, which is reportedly the largest such private collection in the US. This is one of those iconic SD landmarks so I guess you need to go, but it is really nothing more than a tourist trap. It is a very large property with meandering mazes of cobbled together rooms full of junk. There isn't likely anything you need in there, but there is a ton to see. The place is absolutely packed with people and if you aren't watching, they will run you over. We ate there and got two bison burgers and two drinks, and it was nearly $60, so you know you are being taken advantage of, in the middle of nowhere. I will not go back when I'm in Wall or driving through Wall, and I recommend you just skip this, despite the hundreds of interstate signs encouraging you to stop. Don't. read more
