We stopped by Wall Drug Cafe and tried the vanilla and chocolate donuts along with the apple pie and blueberry pie. It was a nice stop during the trip and a fun experience overall. The 5-cent dine-in coffee was a nice touch and added to the classic feel of the place. Among everything we ordered, the blueberry pie was definitely the highlight and was really good. We stopped at Wall Drug while on a cross-country road trip, and it's definitely one of those classic roadside attractions that's worth experiencing at least once. The first building you enter is filled with souvenirs, gifts, and tourist-themed merchandise, making it a fun place to browse if you're looking for a keepsake. We weren't particularly impressed with the food, however, and would recommend eating elsewhere if you're looking for a memorable meal. One of our favorite parts was the small courtyard, which features a covered wagon, a map illustrating the settlement and development of the American West, and the famous jackalope that kids can climb on for photos. Be sure to explore the buildings beyond the main gift shop as well. We especially enjoyed the collection of historic photographs showcasing pioneer life in South Dakota. Those exhibits added some genuine historical context and were, in our opinion, the most meaningful part of the visit. Given the amount of advertising this place does, you would think it would be better. Sadly, it was not. Came here after going to the Badlands National Park. My kids and I had seen SO MANY advertisements on the road for this place, and we were knew we were going to end up here. This collection of stores, eateries and other knick knacks reminded me of a very chaotic swap meet. I was a bit shocked I couldn't find what souvenir worth picking up. Given the price of this place ($15-20 for a burger/chicken sandwich and fries), I thought at least it would be home cookin' or something along those lines. NOPE. Hamburger patties from Sam's club, a dry ass Bison burger, and fries in line with a school cafeteria. I probably should have done a bit more research on the food, but man, what a MISS. There do have a number of photo props and such along the property which can be fun for some, but not for this guy. OVERALL - if you happen to drive by it, you will likely have to go, just to say that you went, but keep your expectations LOW. If you are desperate to buy a bunch of random little trinkets like keychains, t-shirts, and novelty mugs... have a ball. Otherwise, definitely skip it. It's a crowded and overwhelming tourist stop. In the cafe the food was very "Meh". My daughter and husband got cheeseburgers with fries and I ordered a beef hotdog and onion rings. The burgers were horribly dry. They could have been microwaved, honestly. Fries were just fine. The hotdog was pretty good but my bun had been manhandled pretty aggressively. The onion rings were just ok. They arrived room temperature and I'm pretty sure they came frozen in a bulk bag and dropped in the fryer. Unfortunately, the service was very lacking. We stopped here on the way home from a day at Badlands. We expected it to be a tourist trap and it was, so our expectations were pretty much spot on. It was a fun little stop over to stretch our legs and have kids run around, especially the backyard area that has water fountains to play in and things to climb on. We walked around the entire store looking for the free ice water before we finally asked only to find out it was just little cups and any of the soda dispensers have the free water. Yes, it was free ice water and yes, we filled up our water bottles and tumblers before we left, but I guess that part was a little different than advertised because it made it seem like it was its own little station or area. The five cent coffee is a little box you put coins in and self serve; my husband had a small cup and said it tasted a little burnt but five cent coffee is what it is. We didn't eat any other food but got a few donuts. We had to get them at the café because the donut area was making them but you couldn't buy them there. They were fine but nothing crazy special and overpriced. I think I paid nearly $7 for 2 basic donuts. All of the shops are pretty much what you would expect, from junk and random toys to souvenirs like at any other shop to trying-to-be-authentic western wear and very random things. Overall, I'm glad we stopped to check it out and walk around and say we've been there, but it is nowhere near a highlight of the trip. read more

This is really difficult and painful to give you a low score, but there's no other way to qualify your poor service and poor Quality. I had the buffalo burger, and it was dry as the desert. I am not sure if Buffalo meat is supposed to taste like that, because he didn't last time I ate some. We had the shredded beef sandwich, and it just tasted like something made in a hurry. The mashed potato tasted like boxed potatoes, and the gravy was not fresh, and it also tasted like something that comes out of a box as well. I enjoyed the blueberry pie. This is a must see stop in Wall, SD! I was worried it'd be too much of a tourist trap. And it is touristy. But it is cool and historic, and the prices are surprisingly reasonable (certainly better than Cracker Barrel, and at least Wall Drug is a one of a kind!). I was there for the food, but the rest of my family enjoyed wandering through the shops and playing in the outdoor area. They really do have free ice water and $0.05 coffee. Mind you, the water is icy but not especially tasty (well water?), and the coffee is pretty blah, but it was charming that they maintain those prices. I had the fish and chips, and then I had a chocolate frosted donut for dessert. The fish was three small pieces, and one piece was over-fried, but the fish was flaky. It came with a pre-made, hyperprocessed tartar sauce, but one smell of that, and I decided to stick to ketchup. The fries were fine. My husband had a buffalo hot dog (he said it was fine) and the broccoli cheddar soup (he enjoyed that). The kids ordered off the kids menu. Condiments are all in single serve packets except the ketchup, which comes from a dispenser. You order at the counter, then you find a seat. There is seating for 530, which I imagine would be rough in the summer, but we were there in March, so there was plenty of seating and a very short wait to order or get food. They call your number when the food is done. I think I waited about 10 minutes, which gave me time to get drinks and read the brochure with the history of Wall Drug. This is the primary lunch stop for tourists and tour groups visiting Badlands National Park. It is packed constantly but they are very efficient at what they do. After seeing what felt like at least 15 billion billboards for this place along I-90, we figured we had to stop, especially since it seemed like one of the last major stops before heading into the Badlands. We arrived around noon on a Monday and the place was still packed. We ordered the crispy chicken sandwich and their special beef gravy sandwich, and both came out hot and fresh. The chicken sandwich was pretty standard, nothing surprising but nothing wrong with it either. The beef gravy sandwich was also just okay and tasted a little bland for our preference. Surprisingly, the soft-serve ice cream cone ended up being the highlight and was a nice treat before getting back on the road. Service was efficient considering the crowd, and the whole place feels more like a tourist attraction than just a restaurant, with tons of souvenirs and things to look at. Some people say this place is a tourist trap, but I actually found it very cool to visit. I stopped here because I was starving, and there's really not much to eat between Rapid City and Sioux Falls. It was a cold, rainy day, and I originally thought it was right off I-90, but it's actually about a mile or so after exiting the freeway. There were still quite a few people when I arrived. I entered through the main entrance and walked past a few gift shops before finding the café in the back. The café was nicely decorated for the holidays, which made it feel cozy and welcoming. It's an order-at-the-counter place , you pay first, then they call your number when the food is ready. The menu is pretty basic, mostly burgers and sandwiches. I went with a classic burger and skipped the fries and onion rings since I'm trying to avoid fried food. The burger was delicious, though that might have been partly because I was really hungry. I don't usually shop at gift stores, so I can't say I noticed anything particularly interesting there. If you do , I won't be surprised you stuck there for hours ... That's because the billboards for Wall Drug can be found on an approximately 650-mile-long stretch of Interstate 90 from Minnesota to Billings, Montana. So, what exactly is Wall Drug? It's literally in the middle of nowhere in Wall, SD, where the city's 2020 census population counted 699 residents. It's a roadside attraction and tourist stop near the Badlands National Park. The complex includes a collection of cowboy-themed stores, a drug store, gift shop, restaurants, cafeteria, chapel, and an art gallery, On-line descriptions range from a "complete tourist trap" to "amazing". Think of it as a huge shopping mall for tourists looking for t-shirts, toys, pottery, art, clothes, novelties, etc. They are renowned for their chocolate, vanilla, and maple cake donuts, free ice water, five cent coffee, a backyard courtyard for picnics with kiddie attractions and some cool photo ops with a scaled down Mount Rushmore, a real stuffed Bison, and a 6-foot rabbit. We stopped in to eat breakfast twice - not many options in the area in November (the whole town like shuts down). It was basic breakfast but pricey I thought for some pancakes & eggs. It also closes super early so we never got our pie after dinner. I will say the pancakes are huge & really good! Coffee literally is only 5cents! We spent 2 full hours over 2 days shopping - there are several little stores within the big store - everything from Christmas, to clothing, jewelry, home decor, convenience items, boots galore....it was so much to take it! It's like walking into an old rustic town but all inside. It's def a cool stop through. Not somewhere I would go out of your way to see, but if you passing buy, stop in for a bit. during the busy season, there is extra parking lots at the end of the street. read more

First of all, they do the most coolest marketing ever with road signs starting 40 miles away and being placed like every mile. Just brilliant, esp if there are kids bored in the car needing a car game. By the 18th sign I was invested and had to see if they really have donuts and clothes and all the other 500 things they were advertising. They do. Including the bison burger. Which was yummy. We enjoyed a quick stop had a tasty donut, the free ice water and the nostalgia of sine childhood memories hit us. Interesting stop when visiting Badlands National Park. The park is gorgeous and Wall Drug has interesting shops, quirky decor, and good donuts. The vanilla donut was my favorite. I'm giving two stars because I was disappointed in the amount of items that are "designed" in the United States but made in China. I was hoping to see more items made in South Dakota- I can buy China on Amazon. I did, however, find some nice pottery made by Native Americans. Definitely a tourist trap but still worth the stop! I was ready to skip this place because of the tourist type crowds but we decided to check it out anyway and I have to admit it was pretty neat. It's at least worth a quick visit. There's so much to see, almost overwhelming at first. You could easily spend hours exploring but we were in and out in about 20 minutes. Picked up a T-shirt and some stickers, and that was good for us. We tried the donuts--highly recommend. Very good! The only downside was the women's bathrooms were being cleaned while we were there, which caused a long line (about 20 people) for a single stall. Parking was easy--there's extra parking lots for bigger vehicles and parking along the side streets as well. And if you have an extra time, you should check out the library. It was unfortunately closed when we stopped by, but worth the visit as well! read more

If we hadn't already had this place on our radar before we left the house, I don't know how we would have ever known this place existed....that was sarcasm. I'd been here as a kid, so I did have this already on our list of spots, but we would have probably been drawn in by the 10 thousand roadside billboards along the way. Making our way from Michigan to Yellowstone, this was an obvious stop to stretch and do the usual "we're finally free from the car" things. This place was huge and pretty much a mall. They have a bookstore, jewelry store, shoe stores, food, fun photo ops with old statues on benches, and of course TONS of people just trying to stay out of each other's way. We didn't spend much time here, but the time I did spend was at the "Hole in the Wall" book store. I love getting books for my niece and nephews so I did grab some things there. With the ten thousand billboards along the road, it is hard to forget or miss. It was definitely a fun little stop on the way to our next stop, which was Mount Rushmore. read more

Food was overpriced for what you get... $10 for 2 little chicken strips. $20 for a sandwich with dry meat and powder mashed potatoes. Donuts weren't anything special either. Bathrooms were dirty too ... for the price of the food the services need to be improved upon. Some random worker sat down at my family's table to take a break while we were eating ... very weird and never had this happen at any restaurant/cafe before. Cafe was empty too so open seats all around but he chose to sit at our table to take a break. When in Wall you must visit Wall Drug. After a day in the Badlands decided to stop in and check it out. When you walk in make sure to ask for a map. So many gift shops you can get lost. The Hustadt's moved out here in 1931 & they offered free ice water to those passing through. Now there are endless signs every few feet with billboards taking us here. We followed the lines of the crowds inside at lunchtime. Today we came for lunch. We waited on a long line, placed our order & were given a number. We found a table to enjoy our lunch. Lunch was $40 with water & was just okay. The line moved a lot faster than we expected. We wandered around again for 2 hours, exploring the back of Wall this time. Two hours is actually too much time to spend here after work eating lunch. We explored all of the shops and we were done in one hour. We ended a trip to the Badlands with a meal at Wall Drug. The restaurant seats several hundred people and definitely has a cafeteria feel. The rest of the complex is filled with shops and exhibits. The shops range from tacky tourist crap to nice jewelry. There are also a few activities. **June 2025: Tuesday Evening Visit** One of my friends who's visited South Dakota said that I HAD to visit Wall Drug and that no South Dakota trip would be complete without it. Naturally, I included it on my itinerary. If you're from California, it kind of like a small Knotts Berry Farm. It's a big indoor destination that's mostly focused on gifts, food, and some misc stores and every room is western themed. I believe there's also a chapel and a museum, and a whole outdoor area that has interesting photo opportunities. My travel buddy and I enjoyed a simple dinner that included a Buffalo Burger w/ fries ($18.47), a Chicken Salad ($16.19), and a maple donut ($2.69). The buffalo patty tasted like a typical beef patty, but the flavor and portion was good. The chicken salad was enormous and all the ingredients tasted fresh. It's a very casual setting where you order and pick up the food. After our bellies were full we spent at least 2 hours exploring the different sections. I bought a number of souvenirs for my family and friends and with each purchase you get a free "Wall Drug Store" sticker or you can buy them for $.15 a piece. The magnets are reasonably priced and I think if you're trying to budget your time I think 3 hours to explore the property is probably better than 2. Overall, I enjoyed this little tourist town! read more

There are so many rooms with souvenirs, clothes, crystals, food.. more than you can imagine! it is so possible to get lost. I tried their famous donuts. you can choose between vanilla, chocolate, or maple frosting. they came hot. they were okay, but had a lemon flavor kind of like an entemanns cake. Tons of shops with junk from China. I bought a Christmas ornament like I always do on the road but nothing else attracted me.
