The teachers always work well with the students and get to know each student on a personal but professional level. This has always been so important to me and an amazing relationship to have in a learning environment because they know their students' strengths and weaknesses and value each child. They always strive to leave no student behind if they need extra help or even encouragement. I have even experienced them giving my kids more challenges if necessary in subjects that need that kind of attention individually. The academics are always rich, fun, interconnected, and collaborative. The cross-age-group experiences that my kids have had were so good for their social development. The music program has also always been wonderful... and he gets athletics, art, and some theater during school programs all in this small nurturing environment. I'm confident my middle and youngest child are going to launch into middle school with everything they need to succeed, along with a great, big, warm feeling in their hearts for the Niagara community just as my oldest son, my husband, and I all did. These classrooms are filled with so much more than just learning materials; they are filled with tools that will help build the best versions of our children. As a parent and a previous student of this school myself, I promise that you will not regret your decision to enroll your child(ren) at Niagara Elementary School. I know we never have or will! She dedicates her attention and time to Jonathon. She has that joy of service for what she does and I feel her character is the basis for the progress of the application of her skills. As I have friends in Cannelton, I opted for a quick trip through this town and became intrigued by this school building marked with a "Free School" plaque. I discovered amazing history. Originally known as "Free School," this building is now known as Myers Grade School. It was built in 1868 and is the oldest public school to be in continuous use in Indiana (and some believe the country). It continues to be used as an elementary school by Cannelton School District, though in the late 19th century it was Cannelton High School. From what I understand, it also goes by Cannelton Elementary School. Think about that. Built in 1868 and still in use as a school! Cannelton has a relatively small school district with an early learning center, an elementary school, and a junior-senior high school. The entire school system has 279 students. The school was renamed Myers Grade School after the retirement of a popular teacher - Oscar" Daddy" Myers. The school still has the original slate chalkboards, original staircases, and original woodwork. However, Myers Grade School also has computers in every classroom and internet. Since it's an active elementary school, you can't simply go in and tour it. However, it's a fascinating part of Indiana's educational history and the city of Cannelton actually has information about the school on its website.
