I really liked Westwood Books the first few times I visited Sedbergh. Now, however, I'm not so…read moresure. Firstly, the ladies who work there aren't all that friendly. There are so many welcoming, talkative shop owners in the town, then you walk into Westwood and get glared at like you're about to shove The Tale of Tom Kitten under your pack-a-mac (personally, I'm more of a Jemima Puddleduck / Mrs Tiggywinkle kinda girl). Not a great way to be greeted. Secondly, you can actually find cheaper second hand books in other stores in Sedbergh, like the Tourist Information Centre book shop. And thirdly, their fiction section isn't as ample as I'd like it to be. If you're into history, travel, gardening, reference books, walking guides and art then you'll probably find something to suit you at Westwood. But if, like me, you prefer your literature a little less 'real' and a means of escaping the mundanities of modern life, you won't have a great deal to choose from. Two positives about Westwood though: you can help yourself to their coffee machine and use their toilet if nature calls as you're stuffing books into your pockets. Result!

The shop is divided into handy areas to help you find the kind of book you're after, but I invariably find myself browsing in nearly all of them just to see what's there. The fiction section is very strong and reasonably priced. You can pick up a hardback novel in decent condition for less than a fiver. Unfortunately in my case that just means I buy more! It's not a shop to visit if you're in a hurry as you can spend hours in there (and probably should or you'll miss a lot) and it might be dangerous (for your wallet) to go in without a spending limit in mind

The furniture can be quite expensive, but it is generally of very good quality, made from proper wood rather than MDF or chipboard. The shop is spread over two floors with living room furniture downstairs and bedroom furniture upstairs. They have an awful lot crammed in, and sometimes it looks a little cluttered. The staff are very helpful and you can tell they know their products and are comfortable talking about them. They are not pushy and give you plenty of space to wander around looking properly at all the items they have to offer. They also sell smaller items, such as good quality ornaments.

The Age Concern charity shop is one of the biggest charity shops in Barrow, and one of the few that…read moresells furniture as well as clothes and books and bric a brac. As with all charity shops, there is sure a range of goods that it would be impossible to mention everything, but unlike some charity shops they actually price them at charity prices. They haven't succumbed to pricing books at only 50p less than the RRP for example. The furniture is generally old fashioned, but with old fashioned comes quality and a coat of paint will generally bring new life to it. They also offer a house clearance service for people if they want it. Situated on Rawlinson Street its rather out of the way for impulse shoppers.

A huge…read moredepartment store covering 2 big floors, with a car park on the roof so you don't have to carry your shopping too far! It has everything from womenswear, kids, menswear, cosmetics, accessories, sportswear, lingerie, home items, gifts, wedding listthe list goes on! It has also brought Warehouse, Faith and Jane Norman clothes and shoes to Barrow in the form of concessions within the store, which is great as we didn't have those stores before. It has a cafe on the first floor so you can take a well-earned break from your shopping trip for a cup of tea - they do a fantastic breakfast for £3.50 (until 11.30am) and a lunchtime menu as well. It has full disabled access with lifts and escalators as well as the stairs, and is always clean and brightly lit. The staff will annoy you by asking if you want to open a Debenhams account card even if you're only spending £1 - but it is actually one of the better account cards out there, as they send you offers throughout the year and have special cardholders days. If you can't be bothered traipsing round lots of shops and want to get everyone's Christmas presents in one place this year, Debenhams will have something for everyone!

Mainly consisting of ornaments and cards. At Christmas they have a lovely selection of Christmas cards, and of course buying the cards is helping the charity. I do think that they over price some of their second hand goods, books for instance are quite dear compared to other charity shops, and sometimes I've seen the books on special offer in supermarkets cheaper than they have been in this shop. I have to say though because of the range of new goods they do, this is my favourite charity shop.
