At first glance - the quality of this building is evident. The value was in being outside - enjoying the festivities while observing this location. Complimentary water -fruit & snacks available & food trucks were on the other side of the building. This school is located on an incline - seemly semi secluded for optimal security. It was a picture perfect day - sunshine - just a light jacket or long sleeve shirt day - the building is sprawled over a cleverly designed landscape- it is a multi level very large building with protected outside playgrounds spaces and a lower level walking trail.It is also authentically pleasing to the eye -generous outside spaces for children to run & jump & play for outside activities.I was told there were elevators and stairs for options for accessibility. The 2 issues I tend to have are the dismissals at the end of the day seem to be still a work in progress after all this time and the homework given to the elementary students. Sorry but most recent studies show homework doesn't benefit students until 8th grade. For a school on the vanguard of teaching methodology you'd think they'd have gotten the message. Honestly outside of that great school and I'd recommend it to others.

My nephew started Pre-K and, after only ONE WEEK of trying to adjust to an entirely new school environment, they decided to remove him from the program because they considered him "disruptive." He is FOUR. This was his first week. Instead of giving him time to adjust, making him feel comfortable, trying to understand him, or even sitting down with his parents to discuss their concerns and come up with a plan, they simply gave up on him and kicked him out. If you choose to work in preschool, you should understand that every child is different. Some children need more time, attention, reassurance, and patience than others. The teachers here clearly are not equipped to handle young children who don't immediately fit into whatever mold they expect. There was no warmth, no nurturing, and no genuine effort to help this child transition into school. And I will say this plainly: I feel race absolutely played a part in the way my nephew was treated. A young Black boy was labeled a problem and removed from school after ONE WEEK instead of being given patience, understanding, and an actual opportunity to adjust. That does not sit right with me at all. If you're looking for a loving, patient, nurturing environment where your preschooler will actually be given a chance to grow and adjust, I would look elsewhere.

The marker reads, "Founded by G. C. Shaw 1889 to educate African Americans. Named for a Presbyterian benefactor. Later a public school. Operated one block E." Online, there is more information. "Mary Potter Academy was launched in 1889 with George Clayton Shaw as principal, a post he held until 1936. Shaw was born to slaves in Louisburg in 1863. His mother, Mary Penn Shaw, had been provided what he described as "a fairly good education" and she instilled the importance of education in her six children, all of whom became educators. George Shaw graduated from Lincoln University (in Pennsylvania) in 1886. He studied at Princeton Theological Seminary before completing studies at Auburn Theological Seminary (New York) in 1890. While in New York, Shaw met Mary Potter, secretary to the Presbyterian Freedmen's Board and benefactor of the educational improvement of freedmen. Potter provided funding to establish the first school for blacks in Granville County (Oxford), where in 1888 he founded Timothy Darling Presbyterian Church. "Called Timothy Darling (for Shaw's teacher) until 1892, the school was funded by the Board of Missions for Freedmen, New York Synodical Society, and Albany Presbytery. It would later serve as a private boarding school, until the 1950s, then as a public high school until 1969. In 1970 Mary Potter became an integrated middle school. "In 1932 Shaw wrote: "How about the thousands of young people who have spent one to ten years with us . . . who came to us in the crude and went out refined, cultured, and polished--and have gone on to serve even as they were served. If Mary Potter is proud of anything it is proud of its success in developing character in sending our men and women into the walks of life who are transforming the thoughts and ideas of the community in which they live." Local residents and alumni recently have established the Mary Potter School Museum in the Shaw house. Over the school's history fifty percent of its graduates were natives of Granville County.""
