This was a great experience. The national park services rangers were so welcoming to our lil family. This was one of the Jr Ranger stations on the map, so while we were closer to the city, we choose to come here as they open fairly early compared to the others. We were the only people there other than the rangers. It is quiet the walk from the parking lot, but scenic with farm animals on the way to the station. The inside area was amazing, with facts, books, coloring station, a map of local stations and examples of badges from there (super cool), interactive cow milking station (with water), a play farm stand, etc. We got to learn about the site, and had an opportunity to learn about the five different animals they keep, see the feed for each of them and helped feed the chickens. Cutest little farm in the middle of the city! Our favorite without a doubt is the chicken feeding, which happens every day at 10 am. Make sure you get there promptly at 10 or else you might miss the opportunity. There are not many animals here but the fact that it's so close makes it perfect for a fun little outing. Other than the chickens there are cows, pigs, horses and goats. The visitor center has some coloring pages and books for kids. There are picnic tables by the parking lot, and clean bathrooms by the visitor center. read more

A very unique experience and unexpected oasis in the middle of the hustle bustle of the DMV near the MGM. A place to take the family (especially little kids) or by yourself to chill as it is a beautiful farm with animals - lots of chickens. It has plenty of areas for a picnic, trails for walking and connected to bike trails. Easy access with plenty of parking. Actually a really good place to take your little folk or a date or just sit by yourself and enjoy the country feels, right in the middle of Oxon Hill. They have tables wherever you can sit and enjoy a coffee or snack. If you like chickens they got them too. Roaming around and enjoying their freedom. This is a diamond in the rough. I remember coming here as a kid. Now I am fortunate enough to be able to bring my own kids here. This farm is under the National Park Service and allows people from the city to experience a rare farm in the metro area. The farm was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Ranger Craig and the other ranger were very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The park has a picnic area, restroom facility, the large white house on the hill known as the Mount Welby home, a barn, a feed house and a huge private parking lot. Some animals that you will experience are free roaming chickens, horses, cows, goats, and pigs. We came on a Saturday when they had all of their experiences running. First, the littles were able to learn about then chickens and then feed them. Then we took the farm tour, where the littles learned about the other animals and were given the opportunity to feed the horses, goats and pigs. We we also able to go into the main house during the tour and see the few exhibits in there and learn a bit about the farm and the Mount Welby home. The farm use to have a cow milking program, but they do not have a nursing cow, so that stopped. They are looking at either buying a pregnant cow or breeding a cow to continue the program, but there are no immediate plans to do so. One of the rangers pulled out some eggs from the chicken coop and showed them to my littles. A common question is can you keep the eggs. The answer is always no. The farm is not allowed to sell any of their animal products because that requires a special license, which they do not have. The farm is packed with history from being a plantation home during the War of 1812, to a hospital farm for Saint Elizabeth's Psychiatric Hospital. I enjoyed learning the farm's history and glad that this place is still around, especially in a time when farms are dying off. This is a free attraction that can easily take a couple hours out of your day and provide you and your little ones memories that will last a lifetime, all while learning a bit of history. I highly recommend checking this place out. Just be sure to check out their activity/event schedule, including feedings, before you go, so that you can maximize your trip. read more

This is a strange location, just outside the DC border but inside the Beltway. The main attraction here is a farm which is run as a park, allowing kids (and adults) to see some animals up close. Beyond the educational part, a paved trail leads down to a little inlet off the Potomac, which is nothing particularly impressive but a decent place to get some activity in. One can walk into the surrounding neighborhoods, but unless I'm missing something, there is no connection whatsoever to the bridge which allows pedestrians to join the Beltway in crossing the Potomac, nor any way to go towards National Harbor. This significantly limits the value of this park, but it is still a nice place to visit. read more

Just across the Southwest D.C.-Maryland border is a 19th century farm preserved by the National Park Service. Every day, the park ranger opens the gate around 6:30 a.m. and closes it at 5 p.m. All are welcome to visit the farm free of charge. Here's why you should visit: 1) Museum: It's an interactive museum. As you walk the farm's campus, you'll read historical markers and go inside almost 200-year-old brick barns. You learn about the farm and the history it witnessed (like being attacked during the War of 1812 or watching Alexandria across the Potomac get captured by the British). 2) Farm: You can see horses, goats, chickens, hogs and cows on the farm. They offer some farm programming for kids like chicken feedings, tractor rides, etc. 3) Trails: Beyond the early 19th century farm house is a trail that leads to Oxon Cove and wooded trail with river views. Once at he cove, there are benches, views of Alexandria, picnic tables and a running trail that goes for miles. This is a nice historical farm in PG county that had recently reopened after an extended COVID closure. You now have access to see the animals but any buildings are still closed. There's gravel parking and then you make your way towards the farm. They have sheep,goats,pigs,cows,horses, roaming chickens. We got to see the animals being fed so that was added fun. I don't believe any programs are currently running-maybe in summer? We spent about an hour and it was more because my son was enthralled with all the rocks he could throw and not the actual activities at the farm. BUT it's a short drive from several playgrounds, including Jones Point Park, so this is definitely a good stop prior to that on a sunny day! read more

This isn't the most expansive farm open to visitors, but it's free to visit. That's because it's owned and operated by the National Park Service. Rangers run the farm! I came last week on a field trip with a large group of third graders. Many of these students have never been to a farm before. They got to milk a cow. Me too! (A first for everything.) They saw chickens, horses, cows, pigs, and a mule. Perhaps their most favorite part was the wagon ride. We saw Virginia across the water! It wasn't much, but they were excited, and relatively well behaved. Plus hey, who doesn't like a day away from school?! read more

Found this farm on the web because I wanted to do something different with my family today and it was closest to where I am. I was excited from the little information I saw on the web. Upon arriving there the roosters approached us all at once as if they were wanting to feel out our energy so that was exciting for the children. There are others there we saw the cows and pigs. We saw horses there as well. We stayed there for a short time and learned a little about the history of the land through the landmarks in different sections toward the exit. The only thing that I didn't like was how off putting the female ranger was there during her shift today. She initially came out to clear children from the section where the roosters were but when asking her for more Information about the land and events her response was "Did you have a specific question?" In a rude tone. I just asked you the question I had so what you mean do I have a more specific question. SMH. I just let it roll. Overall the male ranger was more apt to answer the questions I had patiently and with respect. I will likely not be back just based off of that. Glad the children enjoyed their time. read more

This is a nice, historical farm located just outside of Alexandria. While no longer a working farm, they do have a medley of animals. Most of them lounging, a few chickens, horses and cows. Of particular interest was this hayride only to find out the last wagon goes out at 11. We had gotten there at 11:30 so that was truly a bummer. Should really state that on their website. They have a little nature center with toys and education points for kids to peruse. There's also an old house and barn with literature points noting its adjacency and role during the civil war. Could spend an hour or so doing the hayride with the kids and have a picnic at the tables out front. Not bad for a quick afternoon. read more

The Farm is tucked away off of I-395. I took my toddler daughter there on a sunny and hot afternoon and we must of missed all of the activities because there was hardly anything to do besides look at the Farm animals, which included the cows, the chickens, the pigs and the horses, who were all hiding out of the sun. It's a cute little farm to enjoy with the fam, when I imagine, there are activities to do with the animals and children. Maybe next time, we'll go earlier in the morning or check the website for activities first. Overall, my toddler daughter enjoyed herself and that's all that matters. read more

I actually saw this place on Google Maps while looking for something else. Since it was on the way I decided to stop by with the fam. We stopped in the Visitor Center and the ranger was very helpful. We spent an hour exploring - most of that time with the the horses and goats :) We also spotted a turkey and some chickens. There's a farm house on the property with a lot of historical stuff about the property inside so be sure to check that out. Best of all, it was free. I would definitely go back if I'm in the area. read more

Nice farm turned park in the Oxen Hill area of Maryland. I discovered it by accident when needing to park my car, but enjoyed my brief trip to visit. As others mentioned, it is a bit of a walk from parking lot to the actual farm itself. The area is nice with animals, but the shop is small with not very much modern ambiance. Not sure if it is worth a special dedicated trip, but it would be nice for a short detour if in the area to see other attractions (e.g. MGM National Harbor, Tanger Outlets, etc.) read more

Check the schedule for events. We had lots of fun milking Minnie the cow and seeing the other farm animals. Ranger Mitchell was terrific. My son loved her. It wasn't too busy and not too much to see, but it is great to take a toddler and so is close to the city. They also have some fun play activities in the main center. Only suggestion is not to use address in GPS. TURN on Bald Eagle Rd. We made mistake of listening to GPS and landed up doing a lot of loops to get there. Need to figure out how WAYZ can update their driving direction. read more

I visited this farm with my son's school class from Hoffman and Boston.This farm is an old park that was turned into a small farm. Everything as the barn and animals are all close together to really no major walking is necessary. The only thing that I thought was worth seeing here was when my son got to milk the cow. read more

Found this place by clicking around on Google Maps - it's a pretty short bike ride from Old Town Alexandria, or you can drive. The bike ride is very hilly, but not impossible. The farm is very low key - animals and whatnot. I go primarily for the large open fields - lots of deer, very remote considering its location. You can hear the highway in places, which is a bummer, but otherwise, it's the biggest green space around, and there are rarely very many people. read more
